Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 381 - 268: First Battle (Part 2)The newcomer was none other than Levi. As a Knight, he wasn’t fond of using a Lance. Such weapons relied primarily on the force of a mount’s charge to deal damage, but with his inhuman strength, a Lance actually limited his performance.
It was far more satisfying to just hack and slash wildly with a Giant Sword.
Empowered by his abundant strength, every swing of his Giant Sword created a sonic boom that echoed over the village. The Little Demons he struck didn’t even have time to scream before their bodies burst open like watermelons.
Guts, bones, and blood splattered everywhere, mixed into a gory pulp.
Many of Yada’s villagers turned pale at the brutal sight, but they also knew this man was their savior. The revulsion they felt was soon overwhelmed by the euphoria of surviving their ordeal.
Soon, the several hundred Little Demons were being slaughtered so badly by this one man that they were practically driven to tears. The cowardly bullies knew they had provoked someone they couldn’t afford to, so they dropped their weapons and fled in all directions.
They didn’t know where safety lay, but anywhere was fine as long as it was far away from the monster who had just appeared.
However, they hadn’t gotten far before a squad of Jackal Wolf Scouts, wielding Curved Sabers, charged out of the woods.
But Arrows reached them even faster.
From the rear, the Centaurs began a charge, their hands never ceasing their work. Their arms, as thick and defined as marble sculptures, effortlessly drew their Bowstrings, loosing one Arrow after another.
Their rhythm was so steady it created the impression of a rapid-fire volley.
Even while charging, their accuracy was frighteningly high. The twang of a Bowstring was inevitably followed by a piercing scream.
These Demons never would have imagined that attacking a single village would draw such a deadly response.
The fleeing Little Demons were powerless to resist and were quickly slaughtered to the last.
Levi noticed that while most of the Demons had been scared off by his Aura of Dominance, one Little Demon surprisingly remained, standing before the captured villagers and staring directly at him.
"And here I thought they were all a bunch of cowards. Didn’t expect to find a tough one," Levi sneered. Without needing any command, Biefeng understood. Its agile body leaped, clearing a dozen yards in a single bound and descending from the sky.
A single swipe of its paw flattened the Demon. Its three heads then fought to tear the creature apart, until the middle one victoriously chewed up the Little Demon and swallowed it whole. It then looked to its Lord, its tongue lolling out, seemingly seeking praise.
"You stupid dog, you’ll eat anything," Levi chided in mock disgust, but he still patted all three of its heads, causing them to wag their tails in excitement.
The freemen before him watched the blood-soaked Black Armored Warrior with fearful eyes.
Levi knew he must be a visually shocking sight. The unrestrained slaughter had been satisfying, but it had also left him covered in bits of flesh and gore.
He proactively removed his Face-covering Helmet, revealing an almost unfairly handsome and youthful face.
"You... you must be the noble Knight sent by the Earth Mother Goddess to save us!" Nina asked excitedly, her fear vanishing the moment she saw his face.
"You were so heroic just now, just like a hero from the stories! No amount of praise could ever be enough to describe your greatness."
"No, I was sent by the Holy Light Goddess," the Lord replied. Looking at the ten-year-old blonde girl before him, he couldn’t stop himself from breaking into a wide grin at her praise.
’After all, children don’t lie. She must be talking about my genuinely excellent qualities.’
Levi vaulted off the wolf’s back. "What’s your name?"
"My Lord, my name is Nina." The little blonde girl’s eyes were filled with his heroic figure, so much so that she had completely forgotten the horrific, Hell-like scene surrounding them.
"Very good, Nina. Can you tell me when these Demons attacked and how many of them there were?"
Levi put on what he considered his most handsome and gentle smile. He took off a gauntlet, bent down slightly, and patted her on the head.
Nearby, the Civilian Militia Captain, Rote, stood to the side, trying to look as unobtrusive as possible. ’It would be much better to ask me these things instead of a child.’
But he didn’t dare interrupt the great lord.
’The man is most likely a nobleman from Kolon who came as reinforcements after learning of the Demon attack.’ He sighed in relief. The man had arrived just in time to prevent an even greater tragedy, and his heart filled with gratitude.
The Little Demons had all been dealt with, save for one or two left alive for questioning.
The Jackal Wolfmen untied a few of the bound villagers, who then went on to free the others.
"My Lord," Rote said, his eyes turning red as he stared at the severed limbs floating in a cooking pot. "This pack of Demons attacked us just before dawn. Many died trying to fight back. Our losses are grievous. Thank you for your selfless aid. This is some money we’ve gathered to show our gratitude. Please, don’t refuse it. It’s the only way a group of poor folk like us can thank you."
"Alas, my condolences," Levi said, patting the man’s shoulder. "These Demons didn’t just attack you; they attacked Kolon last night as well. It would have been a catastrophe if not for a clever and cautious officer defending the city." As he spoke, he discreetly tucked the money pouch into his belt.
’Truthfully, I wanted to go through the motions of polite refusal, but I was afraid they’d actually take me at my word, so I just had to shamelessly accept it.’
’I really am poor right now. I alone have to support everyone in High Cliff Castle, and I only just managed to wrangle military funding for three thousand people out of Liya.’
’Right now, I can’t afford to let a single copper coin slip through my fingers.’
"Ah." Rote was stunned. He hadn’t realized the Demons had also attacked Kolon. His son was in Kolon, working as a tailor’s Apprentice.
He spoke with lingering fear, "Thank goodness that officer was so cautious. I imagine he must be a military genius, his knowledge as vast as the ocean. In his discerning eyes, the Demons’ plot must have seemed as ridiculous as a Goblin trying to win a beauty contest."
"Yes, yes, indeed," the Lord nodded emphatically.
"Lord Levi, who was that officer?" Nina asked curiously.
"That would be yours truly," the Lord grinned, flashing two rows of perfect white teeth.
His words left everyone present speechless for a long moment, completely unsure how to respond. In the end, it was little Nina’s voice, full of praise, that broke the silence.
...
Before long, Fujero arrived with his men.
It was only a few hundred Little Demons, hardly requiring their combined strength. In fact, the newly appointed Marquis could have handled them by himself. So, while Levi was taking care of the Demons in the village, Fujero had sent men ahead to scout.
"Lord, I’ve found the main body of this Demon army on a leeward slope up ahead. There are about seven or eight thousand of them."
Fujero swung himself off his horse and removed his white gloves. He was dressed in an exquisite officer’s service uniform.
Although his Combat Qi Cultivation was considerable, as a commander, he was rarely required to engage in combat personally.
"Seven or eight thousand? We killed at least two or three thousand last night when their sneak attack on the city failed. That number matches my calculations," Levi mused.
"Did the scouts identify their main combatants?"
"According to the Scouts, fifty percent of the army is made up of Little Demons, and the rest are Babu Demons," Fujero reported. He then looked at his Lord, who was holding a little girl, his neck covered in flower garlands and even two strings of garlic. Fujero’s eye twitched, and he couldn’t resist asking, "My Lord... what’s with the...?"
’If he didn’t know his Lord’s character, Fujero might have suspected the Lord of High Cliff Castle had just sacked the village and abducted a little girl to serve as his Maid.’
"Ah, it’s nothing," the Lord sighed. He stuffed a handful of candies into Nina’s mouth and set her down on the ground before continuing, "It’s just a little something from the villagers to thank a certain someone for the rescue. I wanted to refuse, I really did. But they were all so enthusiastic, it was simply too hard to say no."
"Tha’s wight, tha’s wight!" Nina chimed in, her voice muffled by the candy stuffing her mouth. "We all begged him again an’ again, an’ only then did the Lord weluctantly agree!"
