Planet Vs Aliens: Space User Saves the World
Chapter 144: Path that Must be TakenThey settled Houffen with Genius and the others. For now, they were all reading Linlin’s book to familiarize themselves with the future, so they could make proper recommendations and decide on the direction of research they should take.
For example, Dock’s initial idea after what he learned so far was to create a potion to enhance the body. The environment was too unpredictable to think of specific potions, so he ought to focus on something that would be useful regardless.
From what he gathered, even eating something found outside could cause poisoning.
Water sources would have to be filtered several times to be potable, not to mention some of them could have mixed with various chemicals and could even be nuclear.
Humans also had to increase their resistance to the extreme cold and extreme heat, especially the former, which would happen fairly early on, and the human body hadn’t been able to calibrate itself yet.
This cold, fortunately, only lasted a little over a year. Otherwise, humanity could’ve faced true extinction even before the aliens woke up.
And then after that was the abrupt rebound chaos. Here, the aerosols settled in the atmosphere and the greenhouse gases forced a climate whiplash.
When the ash finally cleared, sunlight rebounded, causing rapid warming. The ice that once covered the globe melted, flooding the land. There was also extreme rainfall, exacerbating the situation.
Coastal cities drowned, river systems were reshaped, and even more people died before they could even celebrate the end of the cold.
After this came the extreme heat, one that burned people as if they were in an oven. Hopefully, however, the human body had already adjusted by this time, but many people likely still perished due to prolonged weakness, hunger, and thirst.
Finally, the weather would stabilize, but the world would face this next threat—the aliens, bringing along the virus they spread out.
The aliens were a parasitic race that lived off the life force of other planets.
They arrived along with the meteorites, their ships and their hibernation pods inside of them. While the disasters they caused wreaked havoc, they absorbed the life force taken by the disasters they caused.
They could absorb the most energy when the prey were dying and in despair. To wake up from hibernation, the greedy buggers also needed a lot of it. And it was endless, with them consuming energy until the whole planet was spent.
These aliens could not be defeated by guns, and even cannons. To kill even the most common variations, they had to be barraged by multiple bazookas and grenades.
There were hundreds of thousands, and then millions, of these monsters emerging. How could humanity’s firepower keep up? Not to mention, most humans did not have access to these weapons at all.
However, it was not entirely hopeless.
For the survivors of the initial virus, around half of them would receive blessings. It could be improved eyesight, improved strength, improved speed, or improved senses.
This would allow them to fight against these once-human parasites. People still had to work together to handle the aliens themselves, but at least they were not as helpless as they once were.
They also found that absorbing crystals found in the true aliens could awaken magical powers for some people. Most would lose themselves and transform into parasites, however, so not many risked this.
However, this was the only chance against the monsters, so various experiments were done, some voluntary, but many were inhumane.
Both of Naia’s parents were successfully awakened, and she, along with Kael, were the first to be born with these powers.
This could’ve given humans a fighting chance, but how many people were left by then?
It was too late.
...
Crash!
The car, like a tank, ran over a random SUV on its way. It wasn’t too heavy as to crush it like the car was several tons heavy, but the car climbed up as if the near-vertical surface were any other slope.
For most people, these areas would be unpassable by car, so people had no choice but to go on foot.
But their car was not like any other car.
In fact, they could employ the frontal shield, the kind that could relentlessly push away the obstacles. However, that had its risks.
It would be good if it simply crushed the cars it passed over, but what if it rammed against the obstacle and the force ricocheted everywhere, inevitably damaging others instead?
They were in a hurry, but it wasn’t to the point that they could carelessly run over people, regardless of whether they were visible or not.
That said, they also had thermal sensors in their car, so if there were living, breathing people underneath the rubble they were passing through, they would be alerted so they could avoid them accordingly.
This was not entirely because they were being kind.
These people were, so far, innocent. The more people there were to survive until the end, the more people there would be to fight against the aliens. That was a good thing.
However, they did eventually reach a place that really would be impossible to traverse by car. It was blocked by a fallen building, and the surface was at an obtuse angle.
The car was strong and could handle near-vertical surfaces, but it wasn’t a spider-car that could rock climb at weird angles.
As for the other paths, one had a sinkhole, and the other had a gorge. So it was a choose-your-evil kind of thing.
They drove back and found a hidden alley, putting the car back into space.
They walked across the debris-filled streets. Kael and Naia ignored the chaos, while Linlin and Hans’ eyes were red.
They were quickly distracted when they saw Kael grab Naia’s hand, as if to help her walk along the uneven ground.
Naia’s balance was absolutely superior to most people, but she didn’t take her hand.
The twins gaped and giggled a bit, though they looked weird since they were so close to crying just a second prior.
One of the firefighters saw them loitering and frowned.
"Hey! Don’t dawdle around here! Find an open space! If you stay, don’t blame me if you fall off somewhere and get impaled by a rebar!" he yelled, but then promptly ignored them, as if no longer caring whether they were listening or not.
"Don’t you dare remove anything! That could start a domino effect!"
When he said this, a light debris—some office supplies—really fell down. As if by instinct, he used his own body to cover the patient next to him.
He was bruised, but he didn’t even blink. The group didn’t feel annoyed with him at all. It looked like it was a grumpy tough guy with a soft and righteous heart.
The kind who’d die early in the apocalypse.
