Fire fighters and policemen were currently rushing around the disaster area, focused on rescuing as many as they could, hopefully not unaware that there were much more dangerous disasters coming up.

If they were unaware, then by the time they could even get to half the people underneath those piles, a megastorm would’ve already hit the skies above them.

Anyway, since they were focused on rescue, maintaining order came second, which was what the perfunctory warning was about.

Fortunately, it seemed like the government was aware of the time constraints, so everyone was mobilized to get things done. There was no effort to repair the damaged areas, which was what told them that the people higher up knew what they were doing.

If they tried to fix the roads, the buildings, and the like, it would just be a waste of effort and resources. It was better to use the time to gather as many loose resources and people as they could.

This town’s mayor, at least, seemed to know what he was doing. It wasn’t easy because it was difficult to coordinate without a signal. They all went back to the old school radio, which had a lot of limitations, but what could they do?

The rescuers gathered the ambulatory ones, and then put aside the very injured ones to be taken by the doctors and the ambulances, should they be able to go through all this rubble.

Kael and Naia, who had a space ability, helped out in a low-key way. For example, Kael could implode certain blocks of concrete into nothingness. His control had improved leaps and bounds compared to the past life’s anomalies, so he could even crush a rock while keeping the surroundings unharmed.

Naia, on the other hand, would directly place the pieces of buildings in her space. She chose just a few pieces every so often, making sure their actions were not detected. She also had to make sure it didn’t cause an implosion underneath the rubble, making things worse.

By the time they walked a hundred meters, there was already a small pile of concrete blocks and rebars in her space.

The group continued to walk forward like this, with some people, including rescuers, giving them a glance before ignoring them.

The whistle of the winds going through various cracks made the atmosphere more eerie, and this, combined with the hundreds of sobs, pleas, and begging all around them, made people’s hearts feel heavier as time passed.

"HELP!"

"Here!"

"Please help!"

When they heard voices like this near them, they would not answer, but either Naia or Kael would find a way to lessen the burden. Since there was a person underneath, they were particularly careful, with Naia taking away even more concrete.

In these cases, saving a life was more important than being discovered. Anyway, at this time, people were too busy surviving to notice. Even if some did, they would probably believe they were hallucinating.

Except for one little boy.

He had been trapped inside a flimsy building that would likely give way at the next aftershock. Part of the building, the wall, had actually given way already. It was because a sinkhole appeared at the side, imbalancing the foundation on that side.

He couldn’t help but gasp when he saw whole walls disappear. He moved over, and he ended up falling down. It was also just in time for the sinkhole to expand a bit more, causing more parts of the walls and floors to fall down.

Behind him, he could hear his mother scream in despair.

"KYAAA! MY WILLIE!" she screamed, almost jumping down. Had she not been held back by her neighbors, she really would’ve. "KYAAAA! MY SON! MY SON!!"

"HELPPPP! HELLLLPP!"

This caught the attention of not just Naia’s group, but also the firefighters.

The woman saw the men in red who were focused on another building and sobbed. "No, please go to us first!"

"I have a child here! He fell! Please go to us first!"

There was a firefighter nearby, but his focus was on taking out the injured but alive and placing them in the med bay, not too far away.

It so happened that there was a group of people trapped on the ground floor of one building, and they had already detected them, and there were eerily sharp objects hanging above their heads.

They simply didn’t have the resources to help the mother and son.

Hence, the woman could only work by herself, all while tears ran down her face. She escaped the hold of her neighbors and went down, sliding down the floor, giving way. The staircase happened to be on the side that gave way, so people really had no other way of going down on their own.

She landed at the side of the sinkhole, making sure she didn’t add weight on whatever was above her son.

She tried to dig him out herself, but how much could she carry? The neighbors, on the other hand, were too terrified to join her, afraid the sinkhole would expand again. They rushed to the farthest part of the building, waiting for rescue.

Naia and Kael looked at each other and nodded knowingly. Without further ado, Naia closed her eyes and studied the situation below.

Her power worked a bit like spiritual or mental power in those books. With her space expanding, the scope she could see also increased.

She quickly found the boy, trapped in the pocket created by a wall and a floor slab, though one of them was sliding down. If they didn’t move quickly, the boy could get crushed.

In a snap, everything that could crush or hurt the child suddenly disappeared. At the same time, a certain silver-haired man appeared right next to the boy, and the next thing the child knew, he was already near his mother.

The mother—who was trying to dig—did not see what happened, but someone else did.

"This..."

Julius, the firefighter, had already left the other group to help out with this one. But when he got there, he caught this miraculous scene instead.

He rushed towards Naia’s group, intent on finding out more about this. They did not panic. Instead, they gave him a vague explanation.

"The government knows about this. A few others would awaken something like this, too—provided they survived," Naia told him. "Good job rescuing people. Many of them would become warriors of the future."
