Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Maylene Is Missing?
A/N:2/2 Bonus Chapters
-----------------------
Julian tried to recall the feeling of Butterfree using Confusion.
He focused his mind and controlled the shattered pieces of the cup on the floor, making them slowly float up.
They lined up and dropped into the bin one by one.
Yes!
This is the feeling!
The initial strength of the telekinesis granted by Beginner Psychic Constitution was more than twice as strong as when he had first evolved into Butterfree and learned Confusion.
It was not only because Beginner Psychic Constitution had given him something similar to a Pokémon’s Psychic typing, meaning he received a 1.5-times type bonus when using Confusion.
This Beginner Psychic Constitution felt far more valuable than Julian had imagined.
The A-rank evaluation had raised his Bug-type Affinity by 0.5, turning it into [Bug: 0.96].
After receiving Beginner Psychic Constitution, his Psychic-type Affinity had also risen by about 0.5, becoming [Psychic: 1.14].
Psychic type had won without doing anything, instantly becoming Julian’s highest-affinity type.
It made him want to catch and raise a Psychic-type Pokémon.
After leaving his room, Julian discovered that Professor Rowan and the others had already started their research.
He checked the time.
It had only just reached seven.
Professor Rowan turned his head.
"Breakfast is in the kitchen. Go eat, then cooperate with me and Torchic for a test."
"All right."
The laboratory’s breakfast was simple and convenient: sandwiches and milk.
After finishing it quickly, Julian returned to the research room.
"Professor, what research do you need me to assist with?"
Professor Rowan began with an explanation.
"As you know, I’m researching regional differences. With a Trainer’s cooperation, Pokémon display those differences faster."
This...
Julian felt that he might disappoint Professor Rowan.
His talent for raising Fire-type Pokémon was not particularly obvious.
"No problem."
The test contents were very comprehensive.
After seeing the data, Professor Rowan nodded in satisfaction.
"I handed Torchic to you yesterday. After one session of training with you, all of Torchic’s data has risen by roughly three percent. Very good."
Julian was somewhat surprised.
"That counts as good? I always thought I didn’t have much talent for raising Pokémon."
Professor Rowan smiled.
"You’re comparing yourself to geniuses like Cynthia, so of course you seem ordinary."
"But compared to most mediocre Trainers, your ability to raise Pokémon is already quite outstanding."
Cynthia?
Julian asked curiously, "Professor, are you familiar with Elite Four Cynthia?"
Professor Rowan nodded.
"Cynthia has assisted me with a fair amount of research."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"My friend, KingGarchomp, also said he had helped you with quite a bit of research. This Annihilape project was something he asked you about on my behalf."
"Professor, since you’re already conducting so much research, I feel bad troubling you with Annihilape too. If there’s anything I can help with, please don’t hesitate to tell me."
Professor Rowan nodded.
"There is indeed one matter I need your help with. It may be somewhat dangerous."
Julian clenched his fist.
"Leave it to me. A little danger is nothing. I’m confident."
Professor Rowan waved a hand.
"The Annihilape research is not troublesome to me. On the contrary, it’s a very meaningful project. I should be thanking you for telling me about Annihilape and Rage Fist."
"The research I’m entrusting to you is related to Annihilape. I need you and Cynthia to collect environmental data from Annihilape habitats in the Paldea region."
Acting together with Cynthia.
What risk could there be?
"Leave it to me."
Professor Rowan nodded.
Dealing with Julian was easy.
The difficult part was getting Cynthia to agree to bring him along.
"Cynthia has high standards. Work hard during this period. When you meet her, try to gain her recognition."
"I’ll do my best to convince Cynthia as well, but if she refuses to bring you, I can’t force her."
Julian nodded firmly.
"Don’t worry, Professor. I’ll work hard."
Professor Rowan believed that with Julian and Cynthia’s relationship, plus a little push from him behind the scenes, he should be able to complete the task Professor Carolina had given him.
"When the time comes, you’ll accompany Cynthia as an assistant researcher and collect more Annihilape-related data. That will also help your Primeape evolve sooner."
If he wanted to act with Cynthia, Julian really did need to improve his strength as much as possible.
At the very least, he could not drag her down.
Julian nodded.
"Professor, then I’ll go train my Pokémon in the backyard."
He had only just reached the backyard and had not yet arranged training tasks for Hakamo-o and the others when Infernape came screeching over, challenging Primeape.
Before Julian could speak, Primeape had already charged forward and started fighting Infernape.
Empoleon heard the commotion and glided over with flapping wings, wanting to join the battle too.
"Empoleon, wait until Infernape and Primeape’s battle is over first..."
Empoleon was not listening to anything Julian said.
It charged straight in.
Julian sighed helplessly.
"Hakamo-o, Dragon Claw. Stop Empoleon."
Four Pokémon.
Each one roared louder than the last.
They seriously disturbed Professor Rowan’s research.
Professor Rowan directly brought Yuzo to the backyard.
"All of you, be quiet!"
But the four Pokémon were hot-blooded and could not stop at all.
Professor Rowan could only wait helplessly until they had exhausted themselves.
After lunch, Professor Rowan tactfully said to Julian:
"The preparations needed for this trip to Paldea will take some time. You can return to Veilstone Gym to train your Pokémon. Once everything is ready, I’ll notify you to come over."
Julian understood very well.
Primeape, Infernape, Empoleon, and Hakamo-o were explosive when kept together.
The noise was too great and had affected the Professor’s research.
"I’m sorry for disturbing you, Professor."
Professor Rowan rubbed his temple.
"It’s simply that time is tight and the workload is heavy. Having a group of hot-blooded Pokémon gathered together affects the research too much."
"Sorry, Julian."
Julian waved it off.
"It’s fine. I’m the one who disturbed everyone."
He packed his things and said goodbye to Yuzo and the others.
"If you ever have the chance to visit Veilstone City, I’ll treat you to Veilstone specialities."
"Deal!"
After taking the coach back to Veilstone Gym, Julian discovered that the Gym doors were open, but there was no one inside.
What was going on?
Julian immediately took out his phone and called Darius.
"Where are you?"
"I’m at the Gym. Is something wrong, Julian?"
Julian laughed coldly.
"If you’re at the Gym, then where am I?"
That one sentence made Darius break out in a cold sweat.
"Where’s Maylene? Is she with you at the Game Corner?"
Darius’s eyes widened.
"She should be at home!"
"The doors to Veilstone Gym are open, and there’s no one inside!"
Darius felt his heart go cold.
He had not watched the Gym properly and had even lost his daughter.
Julian was going to burn him alive.
"I’ll call Maylene first."
Julian hung up and called her.
"The number you have dialled is switched off. Please try again later."
He became nervous.
Had Maylene really gone missing?
