Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Beginner’s Luck
Julian packed the grilled meat and fried rice into containers. The ten-layer food box was filled with all kinds of grilled meat, and the fried rice was packed into a large tub as well.
"Cassia, let’s have Hakamo-o and Sirfetch’d stay behind to guard the camp. We can go fishing too."
Cassia nodded, lifting the Eevee in her arms and rubbing her cheek against it.
"Good baby, you’re so soft and cute. Perfect timing. I’ll show Kale how cute my Eevee is."
Julian released Hakamo-o and Sirfetch’d, then instructed them to keep watch over the camp.
He left them behind because they were relatively reliable.
Especially Sirfetch’d. After receiving the task from Julian, Sirfetch’d immediately began patrolling around the campsite.
Hakamo-o was more direct. He raised his head and let out a loud battle cry.
That mighty, domineering dragon roar should make ordinary Pokémon afraid to approach.
Then he lay down beside the backpack filled with food, enjoying the warm spring sunlight.
The place where Maylene and the others were fishing was not far from the campsite.
In front of Paul was only one fishing rod. He was holding Julian’s notebook and reading it carefully, completely unconcerned with whether he caught anything.
As for Paul’s other fishing rod, it was currently placed in front of Caitlin.
Even with three rods laid out, Caitlin had still caught nothing and was bored enough to yawn.
Not far away, on a rock, Maylene pulled a fishing rod out of the water with one hand.
A bright-red, lively, dead-eyed big carp was dragged out of the water.
Magikarp!
Maylene flicked the fishing rod. Her strength travelled through the lure, and Magikarp was flung far away into the downstream river.
With Eevee lying on his shoulder, Julian carried the food box over.
"Everyone come eat. Continue fishing after you’ve eaten."
Maylene immediately put away her fishing rod and rushed straight towards the food box.
When she opened it and looked inside, her eyes lit up.
"Grilled meat! Fried rice! They’re all my favourites!"
Julian shook his head.
Which food isn’t favourite?
Cynthia held Eevee.
"Kale, how did you know I caught an Eevee?"
Caitlin: "..."
Did I ask you?
You just said it yourself!
Cynthia added, "With three fishing rods, have you caught any rare Water-type Pokémon?"
Caitlin turned away, not wanting to talk to Cynthia.
She really knew how to mention the one thing Caitlin did not want brought up. Anyone with eyes could tell she had not caught anything.
"Kale, Paul, hurry over and eat. If you don’t come soon, Maylene will eat everything by herself."
Paul put away his fishing rod and carefully placed the notebook into his backpack.
Cynthia smiled.
"I’ll keep watch for you. Go eat."
"All right."
Caitlin walked over to eat, somewhat dejected.
Just as she picked up her chopsticks and lifted a piece of grilled meat, the fishing rod suddenly moved.
Cynthia gripped the rod and began wrestling with the Pokémon in the river.
Caitlin hurriedly stuffed the grilled meat into her mouth and excitedly ran back to Cynthia’s side.
"Leave it to me!"
Cynthia handed the fishing rod to Caitlin, only for Caitlin to be yanked by the rod and nearly dragged into the water.
Fortunately, Cynthia acted in time and held onto her, preventing her from being pulled in.
Caitlin cried out, "It’s so strong! It must be a big fish!"
Caitlin wrestled with the Pokémon underwater for almost ten minutes before finally pulling hard and lifting it out of the water.
It was a lively Magikarp.
But judging by its size, it had probably not matured yet. It was only half the regular size.
Caitlin’s expression went stiff. Cynthia almost failed to hold back her laughter.
"What a big fish."
Caitlin, embarrassed and angry, shoved the fishing rod into Cynthia’s hands.
"I’m not playing anymore! I’m hungry. I’m eating!"
Cynthia removed Magikarp and tossed it back into the river.
She was only enjoying the fun of fishing. She did not need three rods, so she put away the extra ones.
Unexpectedly, the final fishing rod moved again.
Although Caitlin said she was not playing anymore, she had actually been watching the riverbank the entire time.
Seeing the rod tremble, Caitlin immediately put down the orange juice in her hand.
"I’ll do it!"
Cynthia reeled the fish while teasing Caitlin.
"Didn’t you say you were hungry? Since you’re hungry, focus on eating."
Julian picked up a piece of grilled meat and stuffed it into Eevee’s mouth.
"Veevee!"
Maylene raised her head and blinked, then turned to look beside Cynthia’s feet. There really was an Eevee there.
Then she looked at Julian’s shoulder.
There was another Eevee!
Maylene’s eyes widened.
"Two Eevee!"
Julian smiled proudly.
"That’s right. One each for me and Cassia."
Maylene nodded in satisfaction.
"Not bad. As expected of my brother! With Eevee as your bond, you and Cassia are close to good news!"
Julian thought the same thing.
"You all eat slowly. I’m going fishing."
Cynthia still returned the fishing rod to Caitlin.
Caitlin enthusiastically wrestled with the fish, only to pull it up and discover that it was still that same immature Magikarp.
Caitlin instantly turned to stone. This time, Cynthia could not hold back and laughed out loud.
In anger, Caitlin directly used her psychic power to throw Magikarp away.
"Don’t come back!"
Now, Caitlin finally understood why Maylene threw every Magikarp she caught downstream.
Julian walked over.
"Cassia, let’s fish over there. There are quite a lot of reeds there, so there should be Water-type Pokémon."
Caitlin excitedly asked, "Where?!"
Julian pointed it out directly.
"Over there. Generally speaking, waters with vegetation are easier to catch fish in than other areas."
Caitlin directly picked up her three fishing rods and said, "I’m going over there. I’ll leave this place to you."
After Caitlin left, Julian said, "Let’s go to the other side. There’s a backwater bay there. Last time, I even saw a Staravia catching fish there."
When they arrived at the backwater bay, Cynthia took out a fishing rod and was about to attach the lure.
Julian took out a lure and handed it to Cynthia.
"Use this."
It was a chibi figure with pink hair and a big head.
Cynthia’s eyes lit up.
"Isn’t this you?"
Julian nodded.
"I made this lure in my own image. After we finish fishing this time, take it back with you. You can use it whenever you fish in the future."
Cynthia asked curiously, "Then what lure will you use?"
Julian took out another pink-haired chibi figure from his bag.
"Originally, I wanted to make a lure based on the outfit you wore when we first met."
"But since I hadn’t received your permission yet, I didn’t make it."
Cynthia attached the lure.
"I give you permission. If I’m using a Julian lure, you should use a Cassia lure too."
Julian was somewhat excited.
"Okay!"
Cynthia waved the Julian lure.
"Then I’d better catch a big fish."
Cynthia cast the Julian lure into the water, and very quickly, there was movement.
A huge force came from the rod. Cynthia almost got pulled into the water, and Julian hurriedly hugged Cynthia and the fishing rod from behind.
Feeling Julian’s broad, firm, warm chest and arms, Cynthia’s face reddened slightly.
Julian pulled with force and actually dragged a Gyarados out of the river.
Cynthia was very surprised.
"I didn’t expect that the first time I went fishing, I’d catch a Gyarados!"
Julian was also very surprised.
Was this the beginner protection period for fishing enthusiasts?
Cynthia smiled and praised him.
"It’s all thanks to your lure, Julian. Your beautiful pink hair attracted Gyarados."
Julian smiled.
"It’s clearly because your luck is good, Cassia."
