"Sorry, miss, we only have one vacant room at the moment. It’s a large room, so your pet can sleep there too."
Hearing the word "pet," the Little Octopus’s eyes went wide. He waved his tentacles in displeasure. "I’m not a pet!"
Yu Zhizhi thought for a moment, then nodded. "One room is fine, then."
She paid for the room and followed the woman in red to the second floor.
At the very end of the hallway, the woman opened a door.
It was a very simple room, with a faint dampness in the air, likely because it was so close to the sea and it had been raining continuously for the past few days.
The room was divided into two areas. The outer section had a sofa. Farther in, there was a large bed.
Aside from that, there was no other furniture. The separate washroom only contained an old-fashioned bathtub. A bouquet of fresh flowers sat on the sink, giving off a light, pleasant scent.
After handing the key to Yu Zhizhi, the woman walked away slowly.
She had a graceful, captivating walk that was hard to look away from.
After the long journey gliding over the sea, she hadn’t had a single comfortable night’s sleep. Yu Zhizhi was so exhausted now that she didn’t even take off her white robe before flopping onto the bed.
The blanket smelled nice, as if it had been dried in the sun.
Yu Zhizhi quickly fell into a dream.
The Little Octopus, lying on the sofa, also quickly fell asleep.
Down on the first floor, the woman in red made a phone call.
She reported the situation while painting her nails.
She reported that a female from the Rabbit Clan had checked into the inn today, and that her appearance matched the photograph. After receiving instructions from her superiors, she let out a quiet sigh, went up to the second floor, and bolted the door from the outside.
’Lying in wait for the rabbit... After waiting so long, she finally showed up.’
’I really hope nothing goes wrong this time. Once I hand her over, I can finally leave this seaside town. God knows I hate the sea.’
Yu Zhizhi was having a rare, sound sleep.
The inn was quiet. From the small tavern across the street, occasional bursts of laughter could be heard. Once they faded into the background, they even felt somewhat comforting.
In her daze, she heard something tapping against the window.
The Little Octopus’s snores could be heard from time to time.
She slowly sat up and saw a blurry, dark shadow outside the window, persistently knocking on the windowsill.
Yu Zhizhi moved closer, intending to pull the Little Octopus away from the window.
This small town seemed so leisurely and peaceful, completely different from the Black Tide Bay area in Chelsea. The small tavern across the street stayed open, with people still inside, until three in the morning.
The knocking on the window grew clearer.
The Little Octopus frowned.
He had been woken up by the noise. He saw the girl standing by the sofa, tugging on one of his tentacles. The Little Octopus slowly retracted his tentacle and glared at the window in annoyance.
"Who is it? It’s so damn loud! Are you going to let anyone sleep at this hour? How dare you disturb me? Do you have any idea who I am? Do you know where I’m from? The answer would scare you to death!"
The shadow went quiet.
Yu Zhizhi was now wide awake.
She sat on the carpet. "It can’t be a real monster, can it?"
The little red octopus froze. His sleepiness vanished instantly, and he leaped from the sofa onto the windowsill.
Yu Zhizhi felt a sudden, inexplicable panic.
Her first instinct was to open the door, only to find it had been locked from the outside!
’There’s something wrong with this inn?!’
Yu Zhizhi’s heart raced. She went to the washroom, but there was no window there. If they wanted to get out, their only option was the window by the sofa.
The Little Octopus had already opened the window. "Quick, come over here! We can get down this way."
Yu Zhizhi transformed into her little rabbit form and followed the Little Octopus.
She nearly missed her footing.
Luckily, they were only on the second floor. The Little Octopus immediately wrapped a tentacle around her hind leg. The little rabbit dangled upside down in the air, swinging gently a couple of times.
The Little Octopus was like a suction cup; its body and tentacles could cling firmly to the wall.
He glanced at the rabbit, thinking, ’This furball from the land is so weak. She can’t swim, and she can’t climb walls. I can’t believe her spiritual power is actually higher than mine. That night at Bishui Pavilion, the Rabbit Clan female completely suppressed me.’
Hmph.
The Little Octopus clung to the inn’s outer wall, carrying the little rabbit as he slowly made his way toward the ground.
The moment they landed, a huge, dark shadow appeared before them, and it was growing larger!
’Looks like the one who was knocking on the window earlier.’
The Little Octopus had a bad feeling and quickly shouted, "Run!"
Yu Zhizhi saw the shadow too and started sprinting down the street. The biggest advantage of her rabbit form was its speed, but it came at the cost of consuming her spiritual power.
’If I keep running like this, my spiritual power will be completely drained soon...’
The shadow, which looked like some kind of undersea creature, chased after them, baring its fangs and brandishing its claws.
At a fork in the road, the two little ones panicked and fled in different directions, splitting up completely.
After running for a while, the Little Octopus noticed that the undersea creature wasn’t following him. He immediately understood: the creature was after the rabbit.
Steeling himself, he turned back.
He began to chase madly in the rabbit’s direction.
Yu Zhizhi was in an unfamiliar town and didn’t know the way at all. She had no idea how many long streets she’d run down or how many corners she’d turned; she only knew that the further she went, the more deserted it became, and the path grew steeper.
Her spiritual power dwindled with every step.
Panting for breath, she stopped at an intersection next to a closed food stall.
’I can’t maintain my Beast Form anymore.’
After she reverted to her human form, standing in front of the stall, she could feel sweat covering her face and body.
From the woman in red at the small inn to this creature relentlessly chasing her, this seaside town had felt fraught with danger ever since she arrived.
The giant beast arrived before her.
At first, outside the inn window, it had been just a menacing, dark shadow.
But now, its full Beast Form was revealed. It looked like a giant, dark-colored crab, its body taller than half a building, glaring covetously at the Rabbit Clan girl resting on the steps.
Its pincers were thicker than telephone poles.
"Come with me."
The giant crab beast’s voice sounded as if it came from the depths of the ocean.
Yu Zhizhi’s rabbit ears trembled slightly. Her face paled, and a hint of terror slowly surfaced in the depths of her eyes.
She didn’t know why this creature was after her.
’Could it really be like the Little Octopus said—that this town has monsters that specialize in eating rabbit meat?’
In the distance, the little red octopus came rolling along. When he saw the undersea behemoth’s true form, he spat at it without hesitation. "PTOOEY!"
The crab felt deeply humiliated. Burning with rage, it twisted its massive body and was about to raise a pincer to crush the provocative octopus.
From the other end of the street, a low chuckle suddenly sounded.
The agitated giant crab and the Little Octopus, who was preparing to fight, both froze. They turned in unison to look down the street—
Dark clouds and mist obscured the moon in the sky. Not a single shop was open on this dilapidated little street.
A tall, slender figure gradually came into view.
