Chapter 330: Chapter 331 - A menace
The next morning, after a good night’s sleep, everyone finally set off toward City S. Of course, Shinju immediately pulled Jai into his own car, deliberately separating the newly formed pair of lovers. Shao, who had been assigned to drive the second car, could only stare at the vehicle ahead of him with a dark expression, his hands tightening around the steering wheel as he silently ground his teeth.
In the first car, Yunfeng sat in the back with Muchen and his mother, Jinju, while Hana, Lu Zhi, and Yuki filled the seats behind them. The journey had barely begun when Hana leaned forward from the back, suddenly remembering something.
"So, Mom, did you hear about Yunfeng’s kid that’s on the way?"
Jinju sighed, already knowing exactly where this conversation was going. "Yes, yes, I heard. That boy is so irresponsible." She turned her head and gave Muchen a warm smile. "I’ll never blame you, Muchen. It’s entirely this kid’s fault."
Muchen smiled and gently rubbed his belly. "I know, Aunty. Scold him more for me."
"Hey!" Yunfeng immediately protested, looking at the two of them in disbelief. "You guys can’t gang up on me. I’m just an innocent baby."
Hana snorted from behind him. "Ugh, don’t make me puke. You’re having a baby. How are you still calling yourself a baby?"
She reached forward and gave his hair a playful tug.
"Seriously, Hana!" Yunfeng complained, immediately reaching up to protect his hair. "If I go bald because of you, I’ll make sure you go bald too!"
"Both of you, stop fighting." Jinju sighed as she looked between her bickering children. She had missed them terribly during all those months apart, and part of her was still overwhelmed by finally having them both within reach again. But after only a short while trapped in a car with the two of them, she was beginning to miss something else.
Silence.
"Mom! Control your daughter!" Yunfeng complained. "She’s becoming an annoying tween!"
"Shut it, Yunfeng! You’re becoming an annoying dad!" Hana immediately shot back, reaching forward to tug at his hair again.
"Don’t you dare!"
The two immediately started arguing again, their voices filling the car as they bickered back and forth.
Muchen quietly watched them, choosing not to get involved. He simply turned toward the window, watching the passing scenery while one hand rested protectively over his belly. Despite the chaos around him, there was a small smile on his face.
Jinju noticed the gesture and her expression softened. Sitting beside him, she gently placed a hand over his belly, her eyes filled with concern. "How far along are you now? If these were normal times, we should go to the hospital and have you properly checked. But..." Her voice trailed off as she glanced at the ruined world outside the window.
Muchen understood what she meant.
"Don’t worry, Aunty. We have a doctor with us." He gently rubbed his belly and smiled. "He already checked the baby. They’re very healthy and happy inside."
"That’s wonderful to hear." Jinju looked relieved, her hand remaining gently against his belly for another moment. "You need to eat well and sleep properly. And don’t let these brats disturb you too much. If they bother you, just tell me."
She gave Yunfeng and Hana a pointed look before gently patting Muchen’s back.
Muchen nodded with a warm smile.
"Don’t worry. I’ll tell you."
After another hour or so on the road, they finally stopped to take a bathroom break. As a pregnant person, Muchen was slowly losing his ability to hold in his pee for very long, and honestly, it was both embarrassing and annoying. All three cars pulled over together, giving everyone a chance to stretch their legs while he hurried off.
Yunfeng immediately went with him for protection, refusing to let Muchen wander off alone.
Hana, however, stayed behind by the car with her mother. She watched her for a moment before suddenly wiggling her eyebrows. "So, Mom... you and Mister Chen?" she asked, clearly enjoying herself. "What exactly is going on there?"
Her mother actually blushed slightly before glaring at her. "What are you even asking? There is nothing. Nothing is going on."
"Hmm..." Hana hummed, dragging the sound out suspiciously. "I saw the way you look at him...and the way he looks at you." She leaned closer with a mischievous grin. "Am I going to get a new dad?"
Jinju immediately pushed her face away. "No. Don’t talk about useless things."
Hana sighed and leaned against the car, folding her arms. "Come on, it’s not bad to remarry. You grieved Dad for a very long time. You should find love again in your life."
Jinju fell silent as she looked at her daughter. She had lost her husband many years ago, and it had been such a devastating blow that for a long time, simply getting through each day had been enough. She had raised Yunfeng and Hana herself, working through countless nights and days to make sure they were safe. Between surviving and raising her children, she had never really had the time—or perhaps the thought—to consider another relationship.
But now...
Her eyes drifted toward Shinju, who was standing nearby, keeping an almost ridiculous watch over his son as if Jai were some priceless treasure that might disappear if he looked away for even a second.
As if sensing her gaze, Shinju turned and walked toward her. Without saying anything, he held out a candy bar.
Jinju silently took it, glancing at him before raising an eyebrow. "Not guarding your son anymore?"
The man let out a long, exhausted sigh. "That kid is aggravating."
"Tell me about it." Jinju shook her head with a small smile. "My Yunfeng stressed me out so much too. All the time."
"I know why those two are friends now." Shinju sighed again. "They’re both menaces."
Jinju couldn’t help laughing. Shinju looked at her, and for a moment, he smiled too. The two of them simply stood there, sharing the small, familiar amusement of parents who had somehow ended up raising equally troublesome children.
