Chapter 331: Chapter 332 - Sneaking away

That night, Shao slept in the car after driving for most of the day while Yunfeng, Zei, and the others stood guard outside. Lying alone on the seat, he stared up at the ceiling with a sigh. Once again, Jai’s father had guarded his son like a hawk. They had barely managed to spend any time together throughout the entire day before the general would appear and separate them as if they were planning some terrible crime.

Shao hadn’t known being away from Jai could be this much of a torment. Jai was so close, sleeping in the car only a short distance away, yet he might as well have been on the other side of the world. He could still faintly catch Jai’s sweet scent whenever the wind shifted, which only made him miss him more.

He rolled onto his side and grumbled under his breath about how unfair life was.

Meanwhile, in the first car, Jai was lying across the back seat with his eyes closed, pretending to sleep.

His father was sitting nearby.

Watching him.

He silently groaned and pulled the blanket higher over his face. His father had spent the entire day keeping him away from Shao, and apparently even sleep wasn’t enough to make him relax. He had already tried several times to convince him that he was twenty years old and perfectly capable of deciding where he wanted to sleep, but Shinju had simply told him to stop arguing and get some rest.

This was unbearable.

Jai peeked out from beneath the blanket and glanced toward his grandfather.

Kailun had been watching the entire exchange with an amused expression. When their eyes met, Jai subtly mouthed, Help me.

Kailun’s lips twitched.

A few moments later, he turned toward Shinju.

"You should sleep too."

Shinju frowned. "I’m fine."

"You’ve been awake since before we left," Kailun pointed out. "You can’t guard him properly if you’re exhausted."

"I don’t need to sleep."

Kailun gave him a flat look. "You’re a general, not a machine."

Shinju glanced toward Jai, who immediately shut his eyes again and pretended to be deeply asleep.

"I can sleep later."

"You can sleep now," Kailun said firmly. "I’ll keep watch."

Shinju hesitated.

Kailun sighed. "Go. I’ll wake you if anything happens."

After a moment, Shinju finally nodded. "Fine. Wake me if he needs anything."

"I will."

Shinju settled down, though he still glanced toward Jai several times before finally closing his eyes.

Jai remained perfectly still for a while before he slowly lowered the blanket and looked toward his father.

His dad was finally asleep.

Jai’s eyes immediately lit up.

He carefully pushed himself upright, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.

His grandpa was sitting nearby with his arms crossed, very obviously pretending not to notice what his grandson was doing.

Jai slipped out of the car as quietly as he could. His feet touched the ground, and he froze when the door made a tiny click.

Shinju shifted.

Jai’s heart jumped into his throat. He froze up.

His father turned slightly in his sleep but didn’t wake.

Kailun glanced at him and shook his head with a faint smile.

Jai mouthed, "Thank you."

Kailun waved him away.

Jai closed the car door as gently as possible and then took a few steps away.

The moment he was far enough from the car, his careful sneaking completely disappeared.

He broke into a wide grin and hurried toward Shao’s car, almost bouncing on his feet. A quiet giggle escaped him as he glanced back once to make sure his father was still asleep.

He had escaped.

He had actually escaped.

Jai covered his mouth, trying to suppress another delighted laugh as he reached Shao’s car. He carefully opened the door and slipped inside.

The door closed behind him.

Shao, who had been lying on the seat, immediately looked over.

The moment he saw Jai’s smiling face, his tired expression softened.

"Quick. Move," Jai whispered happily.

Shao immediately scooted over, making room for him. Jai climbed onto the seat beside him and closed the door before turning toward him with a huge grin.

Shao stared at him for a second, clearly amused.

"You escaped your dad."

"With my grandpa’s help," Jai whispered proudly. Then he leaned closer, his smile turning soft. "Hi..."

"Hi." Shao gently cupped his face, his thumb brushing over his cheek. After spending the entire day being kept apart, having Jai suddenly appear beside him felt almost unreal. "I missed you."

"Me too." Jai immediately melted into his embrace. "I really, really missed you." He wrapped his arms around Shao and snuggled against his chest with a happy sigh. "Ugh, escaping my dad was so hard," he mumbled. "I had to use all my brain cells. Every single one."

Shao chuckled and tightened his arms around him. "Then let’s let your brain rest tonight. I can’t have your small little head worrying about everything."

Jai lifted his head and gave him an offended look.

"My head isn’t small."

"It is."

"It isn’t."

Shao gently poked his forehead. "Very small."

Jai narrowed his eyes at him, but he couldn’t keep the smile from returning.

"You’re lucky I missed you."

"I know."

Jai happily settled back against his chest, finally relaxing now that he was where he wanted to be. Shao stroked his hair and gently caressed his face, enjoying the warmth of having him close again.

Outside, the camp was quiet, and nobody seemed to have noticed Jai’s little escape.

For tonight, he had successfully defeated his overprotective father.

And with a satisfied smile still lingering on his face, Jai curled up in Shao’s arms and soon fell asleep.

This was exactly the sight Shinju was greeted with when he woke the next morning.

His son was curled up comfortably against another man, both of them sleeping soundly and completely unaware of the world around them. For a moment, Shinju simply stood there staring at the scene, his expression slowly darkening.

He really, really wanted to march over there, grab Jai by the ear, and wake him up immediately. The urge to drag his son back to his own car was almost overwhelming.

But then he paused.

Jai was smiling softly in his sleep, his face completely relaxed as he snuggled closer to Shao. He looked genuinely happy.

Shinju stared at him for a long moment, his anger slowly losing its edge. In the end, he said nothing. He quietly closed the car door again and walked away, leaving the two of them sleeping peacefully.
