Primordial Awakening: My Bloodline Evolves Infinitely
Chapter 107: The First ClueDamon towered over her, his frame casting a shadow over her. His blue eye pierced her, while his white one remained sightless, bearing no trace of care for his child.
"How many times, Elizabeth? How many times?!" His voice grew rougher as he stepped closer. "You bear the Starlight name, yet you keep bringing shame to our legacy day after day!"
The professors and recruitment teams weren’t the only ones supervising the exercise. The heads of prominent families were watching as well.
Ever since the start, Damon had been there, watching his daughter’s every move.
By the end, his fury had turned into disgust.
"What was that performance?" He gritted his teeth and crouched to meet her eyes.
"So many resources have been poured into you... and for what? To get eliminated by one measly snake?"
Damon reached out and roughly pulled her by the hair.
Elizabeth flinched from the pain but didn’t dare protest. She couldn’t afford to. She didn’t deserve nicer treatment.
"Not only did you fail to subdue the beast, but you also tarnished your mother’s heirloom! For what? Do you intend to drag her image through the mud even further?" He brought his face closer.
"Elizabeth... Was it not enough for you to kill her with your birth? Must I take back the scythe she left you after all?"
At the mention of losing her scythe, Elizabeth’s icy eyes trembled, her heartbeat quickening.
"No, please! Anything but that!" She pleaded.
Damon’s eyelids twitched.
"Then... should I relieve you of Rimy? An Ice Dragon is wasted on you, after all. It will only continue to consume our resources with no benefit. Hmm... I’ve got it! How about I gut her alive and make a meal out of her? Maybe then you’ll start to take things seriously?"
"I will not let you touch her!" Elizabeth declared as she fiercely pushed Damon away.
Damon blinked slowly, disbelief evident on his face that his daughter had dared to act so out of line.
A second later, Elizabeth realized her mistake, but it was already too late.
"I—I am sorry. I didn’t mean to..." She apologized, tears starting to stream down her cheeks.
However, Damon didn’t seem to hear her. Gradually, his vision turned red as he clenched his fists so tightly that they drew blood.
He gazed upon his daughter.
"Such behavior will not be tolerated. It seems you are in desperate need of disciplinary measures."
Damon prepared to strike, not intending to hold back.
Yet his fist halted just an inch from her face, his attention shifting toward the trees.
"Ah... The youngest child of Gideon makes his appearance? Such a pleasant surprise."
From her father’s words, Elizabeth realized that he was referring to Leonard.
’Leonard is here? Did he see all that?’
For a moment, she didn’t know how to react. Reaching up, she tried to wipe away the tears falling from her eyes, yet they just didn’t seem to stop, no matter how hard she tried.
’I don’t... I don’t want him to see me like this!’
With no other idea coming to mind, Elizabeth rose to her feet and dashed away, keeping her back turned to Leonard and refusing to let him see her face.
"..."
Rendered speechless, Leonard didn’t know what to say as Elizabeth fled. Though his eyes remained fixed on Damon the entire time, losing track of him was far too dangerous.
Several seconds passed in tense silence as the two stared at each other. At last, Leonard took a deep breath and spoke.
"What the hell was that?"
"What may you be referring to?" Damon tilted his head to the side, intrigued.
Leonard didn’t like how openly the man acted oblivious.
"This is no way to treat your daughter! What... What kind of father are you?!"
Damon laughed out loud. He had expected Leonard to act timid. It was rare for his expectations to be incorrect.
"Oh, so you met the Lord of the Starlight household, and your first instinct is to lecture me?" Damon’s laughter continued for a while.
"Who do you think you are to question the way I raise my children?" He asked, stepping closer.
"You have no kids, so you know nothing of the real struggle... Heck, a bastard such as you never really got to know your parents, did you?" Damon’s smile widened. "How can you prove that what I am doing is wrong?"
Leonard’s eyes narrowed, unable to retort. Twisted as it was, the man was right.
"Still, you indeed put down that beast. Even though my daughter did most of the work, it’s still commendable for a bastard like you... I suppose that’s to be expected, considering you’re Gideon’s child."
Although toying with Leonard was amusing, Damon had more pressing matters to attend to. So he had to leave early.
"A shame that he had to be killed for such a petty reason."
For a moment, Leonard’s heart sank.
"Wait! Do you mean you know why my father was killed?! Tell me!" Leonard yelled. After so long, he finally had a clue about the thing that bothered him most.
Damon paused and turned around.
"Of course I know! It’s because—"
He began, then paused mid-sentence.
"Now that I think about it... I have no incentive to tell you whatsoever!"
Leonard’s eyes darkened. He couldn’t let the opportunity slip past him no matter what!
"Then let’s make a trade! You must want something in return, right? What will it take for you to tell me?"
Damon grinned, his eyes shining with a dangerous edge.
"Trade? So be it. My daughter is incapable of wielding the scythe heirloom her mother left behind. If you find a way to fix that good-for-nothing, then perhaps I might just shed some light on what you have been wondering about all this time."
Without another word, Damon vanished, leaving Leonard alone.
The pressure of the man disappeared. Leonard finally managed to exhale. Just being in Damon’s presence had made his skin crawl.
"No wonder Elizabeth is so scared of him. I thought that I had become stronger until I met him. Now I realize that he could have ended me in a flash."
Leonard shook his head somberly.
"I thought I had it hard... But being part of the Starlight household doesn’t seem any easier."
His shoulders dropped as he glanced upward at the sky.
"At least I finally found a clue..."
