Leonard was uncertain what to expect. The last time he had met Owen was when he had gained Titanic Oath, after which his grandfather had intentionally cut off all contact.

’Could something have gone wrong? I can’t imagine any other reason for him to suddenly want to see me.’ Leonard thought, his eyes scanning Maxwell’s back.

Honestly, a part of him wanted to lash out and strike while Maxwell wasn’t looking to get revenge for his father. Yet Leonard knew that he didn’t stand a chance, even with the element of surprise. Not to mention, he still needed answers.

The two left the academy grounds. Nobody dared to stand in their way.

Soon enough, they reached the center of Eternia City, where the King’s palace stood tall.

Leonard paid attention to the servants taking care of the castle. While, at first glance, they seemed like ordinary people, they emitted a formidable presence.

Each one of them was an experienced awakener who could hold their own in a fight. The palace’s security wasn’t to be underestimated.

"We are here." Maxwell exclaimed calmly, pushing open the gates leading toward the throne hall.

They entered a vast chamber, Leonard’s eyes fixed on the end of the room, where a golden throne had been placed, slightly elevated above the ground. Upon it sat King Owen.

Leonard dropped to one knee and placed his right hand over his own heart.

"I greet the Grandfather." He greeted the King.

Owen’s grey eyes fixed on his grandson. A few seconds passed in silence before he nodded.

"Leave us alone." Owen shifted his gaze toward Maxwell.

"As you wish." Maxwell bowed deeply before exiting the chamber.

"Rise, my descendant."

Leonard complied, standing on his feet. Raising his eyes, he looked at his grandfather, eager to know why he had been called upon.

"Congratulations on your performance, Leonard. Nobody had any expectations for you, yet you proved us all wrong. Not only did you rank first amidst the Monster Wave suppression, but you even subdued the Boss."

Leonard wasn’t surprised that Owen had been made aware of the expedition’s results so quickly. Heck, his grandfather might have even watched the whole thing live.

"I am honored."

Aware that Owen couldn’t have called him just to praise him, Leonard was about to ask the real reason he was here until his gaze locked onto the middle of the hall, where a grey orb rested upon a pedestal.

"This is..." His eyes narrowed.

"I am sure you know..." Owen interrupted, rising from his throne.

"This is a device that detects the rank of your Bloodline. You have already undergone the process once, so you must be familiar with how the process works."

Leonard stood motionless for a while, his hesitation palpable.

"Why is this here? Headmistress Jennifer was present during the time of my awakening. Given who she is, misidentifying my rank is unlikely."

Owen’s lips curled into a knowing smile.

"Indeed, she has. However, given your accomplishments so far... The speed of your progress, the nature of your skills, your summons, your familiar... It’s clear she has failed to fully grasp the extent of your abilities."

"So you think the rank of my Bloodline isn’t Common?" Leonard tightened his fist.

"Think? Oh no, no." Owen chuckled heartily. "I am certain."

His eyes turned colder.

"I applaud you, my grandson. You fooled everyone, even me... Still, that ends today. Now stop stalling and step forward. Let me see the true rank of your Bloodline."

A frown etched onto Leonard’s face, but he remained silent.

Going over to the grey orb, he placed his hand over it and channeled his mana.

Just like last time, the grey color persisted, a telltale sign of a Common Bloodline.

"Counterfeit." Owen declared calmly.

He took the orb in his grip and shattered it into fragments. Then, he took an identical one and rested it on the pedestal.

"Again."

Leonard channeled his mana once more. The end result remained the same.

Slowly, Owen’s face twisted into a grimace. It was unheard of for his hunch to be misplaced.

Reaching out, he placed a hand under Leonard’s chin and raised his head so that he couldn’t avert his gaze.

"Be honest. Does Gideon’s Bloodline run in your veins? Do you bear a Divine Bloodline?"

He was certain. There was no other way to explain how Leonard had developed such monstrous abilities in such a short amount of time.

Leonard felt his heartbeat race in his ribcage. Despite that, his mind remained unnervingly calm.

"No." He replied, his voice unfazed.

’In reality, I have something much stronger.’ Leonard thought, relieved that he hadn’t been forced to lie.

"..."

Owen remained quiet, gauging Leonard’s reaction.

In the end, he let go.

"I know when I am being misled... However, I can’t wrap my mind around how."

Nothing about Leonard made sense. But Owen had failed to prove any deception. The two orbs showed the same results, and his grandson hadn’t uttered a single lie during the entire interrogation.

"To think you are able to keep secrets even from me... Not a single one of your siblings has managed to achieve such a feat!"

Leonard exhaled deeply.

"Perhaps it’s just your paranoia, Grandfather? I, too, have the bad habit of overthinking." He suggested playing obliviousness.

King Owen blinked slowly before erupting into laughter.

With an expression of pure amusement, he walked back to his throne and took a seat.

Seeing that his grandfather had dropped the matter, Leonard relaxed his shoulders briefly.

"My descendant, tell me... Have you ever killed a person?"

At the question, Leonard’s body tensed once more, pondering the best way to answer.

"Don’t look at me like that. I don’t have any ulterior motives. I’m not going to persecute you or anything. It’s normal for awakeners to kill others. Just give me an honest answer."

After a moment of deliberation, Leonard nodded.

"Yes. One."

"Hmm... That’s good. That’s good." Owen muttered to himself as he stroked his chin thoughtfully.

"If I may ask, why did you wish to know?" Leonard inquired.

"To get a better idea of how useful you will be in the events that are about to unfold." Owen answered with a nonchalant shrug.

"After all, Eternia City is about to be plunged into a war."
