Leonard stared blankly at his grandfather, needing a few moments to process the sudden news.

"Excuse me? A war? With whom? Why?"

Thoughts and questions surged through his mind.

Most of the surrounding kingdoms should have their hands full with handling the rapidly increasing number of dungeon outbreaks along the influence of the Void.

For the life of him, he couldn’t understand why they would respond to that by starting wars with them.

Owen observed the reaction of his grandson. He fared better than expected.

"The academy should have briefly touched on the subject of the territories surrounding us, right? Do you know who borders us to the north?" He probed his knowledge.

"Of course. That is where the elven nation begins." Leonard replied with a nod. "More specifically, we border the Woodfrey Nation, from where Princess Arabella and others of her kind have entered the Elite grade in a cooperative effort to strengthen our ties with them."

Owen tilted his head to the side, his eyes turning more calculating.

"Correct. Now, since you are considered a potential successor to the throne, tell me. Do you understand what makes the elves valuable allies?"

"I do not." Leonard shook his head. There was no point pretending to know what he didn’t. It was better to ask in order to learn.

"Simply put, their presence accelerates the fertility of our lands. Without them, the crops we reap each year will decline, and the livestock we tend to will die out. One of their innate traits is to bring prosperity to food production... A trait that is becoming increasingly more valuable as the corruption of the Void spreads, slowly seeping the life out of our soil."

Honestly, Leonard had spent so much time thinking about the monsters that emerged from the dungeons that he hadn’t thought much about food.

Admittedly, he had almost forgotten the struggles he had faced back in the Lower Sector when it came to finding proper nutrition.

"As such, thanks to the elven support, we can ensure that our people are well fed." Owen continued.

"However, that isn’t the case for our neighbors to the south. Sandromia City has been hit by a particularly severe drought, and a lethal famine has spread far and wide... In that moment of desperation, they shifted their attention to the biggest source of salvation they could find... us."

Leonard’s eyes narrowed. The fact that he hadn’t heard about this until now was a testament to how recent the disaster had been.

"But, as you said, we have an abundance of food, right? Rather than waging war, can’t we trade food for materials? Can’t we help them?" He asked.

Owen’s eyes grew somber.

"We can..." He spoke in a grim tone. "But only to an extent. Our production isn’t high enough to supply two cities with tens of millions of people. So they sought to take what’s ours by force."

Leonard didn’t know what to say.

If Sandromia City was that desperate, it meant the famine was so extreme that it didn’t give them enough time to establish trade routes. And Eternia City seemed like the perfect target, given the Woodfrey Nation to the north and the food at their disposal.

"Prepare for the upcoming war, Leonard. You will take part in it." King Owen declared. "Not just you, but your nine siblings as well. The warfront will be the place to prove who is most worthy to inherit the throne. After all, the one fit to be King is the one who protects the people."

He paused briefly, letting the silence settle.

"Or... you can refuse, of course. If you are willing to cower behind our walls while the enemy slaughters our people, the choice is ultimately yours. Though, keep in mind, refusing to take part will mean giving up your candidacy for the throne."

Owen heaved a deep sigh.

"That’s all I wish to discuss. I believe you are smart enough to keep today’s conversation to yourself. Use the time to think long and hard about what you will do. Dismissed."

Remaining silent, Leonard bowed and made his exit from the palace.

"A war... Not with monsters, but with humans. Killing an assassin after my life is one thing. But doing the same to soldiers will be harder... Still, if they invade our land, we won’t have any other choice. We have to protect our own."

Leonard’s mood turned bleak. He would be having trouble sleeping tonight.

Meanwhile, back in the throne hall, soon after Leonard left, Maxwell made his entrance before the King.

He couldn’t care less about what Owen and Leonard had discussed in his absence. From his point of view, Leonard was too weak to enact any meaningful change.

"Our operation has been successful, King Owen." Maxwell reported in a respectful tone as he kneeled.

"The spies we have planted in Sandromia City have successfully poisoned their fields and burned their food reserves. What’s more, we have covered our tracks by making it look like it was the work of the Void Believers. No soul will suspect us."

"Marvelous work!" Owen praised with a knowing smile.

"With this, we have completely driven them into desperation. Pass the word to intentionally weaken our border to the south. Make it appear as though we are the perfect prey for them to attack!"

Owen leaned back into his throne.

"This way, Sandromia’s attack will seem sudden and barbaric. On top of that, the presence of Princess Arabella in our academy will make it look like they are waging war against all the elven nations, practically guaranteeing their support in the war effort!"

The plan was practically flawless. Eternia City had the resources to crush Sandromia City in a confrontation, but attacking without justification would paint them in a bad light.

However, now they would have the perfect excuse to retaliate, making it look like they were the ones in the right!

Maxwell’s expression twisted into a hideous smile.

"Magnificent plan, my King! Even if somebody suspects that we tampered with their food supply, by the time they connect the dots, the war will be in full force! Once the gears of progress start turning, they can’t be stopped."

"Indeed." Owen nodded thoughtfully. "This war shall be the first step toward turning my prosperous city into a prosperous empire. Plus, it will make it apparent who is the most worthy of my descendants to inherit the throne based on their contribution to our expansion."

Heavy footsteps echoed across the hall. The headless corpse of Gideon stopped beside the kneeling Maxwell and faced Owen.

The long centipede squirmed where Gideon’s spine had once been, the creature subtly controlling the body’s movements.

"See, my son? For however strong you were, you lacked the true ambition of a leader. Eternia City is at its strongest, and it would be a sin not to impose our will upon others. No matter what, you, the Gradeless Units, and the rest of the awakeners at our disposal shall work hard so our influence spreads to every corner of the planet!"

King Owen stood up, raising a glass of wine upward. The crimson liquid caught the sunlight, reflecting it onto every part of the throne hall, basking it in its color.

"To progress!"
