Primordial Awakening: My Bloodline Evolves Infinitely
Chapter 113: A Mother And A DaughterHarley’s mother froze in place, her eyes narrowing with unreadable intentions.
Instantly, she strode forward, making her way toward them.
For a fraction of a moment, Leonard’s eyes darkened. Honestly, he had hoped he wouldn’t have to meet the woman again, but it seemed luck wasn’t on his side.
Keeping up appearances, he addressed her formally.
"Greetings, Lady Valentina." He said in an even voice.
Valentina wore a red hoop skirt. Her curly crimson hair almost reached her waist, while her emerald eyes remained unreadable.
She didn’t reply immediately. Instead, her eyes locked onto Harley’s, who was still unconsciously clutching Leonard’s arm.
"!!!"
Realizing her mistake too late, Harley hurriedly let go and straightened her back. She felt her throat dry out, as though all moisture had been drained from it in an instant.
"M—Mom, I can ex—"
She began only to be interrupted.
"Harley, we will speak in private." Valentina’s words sent chills down her daughter’s spine.
Reluctantly, Harley obeyed, keeping her gaze locked downward the entire time.
Valentina glanced at Leonard briefly.
"Excuse the interruption, but I urgently need to speak with my daughter, Mister Leonard."
"I understand." He nodded, unwilling to intrude on the family affairs of others.
The mother and daughter went somewhere where nobody could eavesdrop on their conversation.
Valentina spread her fan wide, covering the bottom half of her face as her eyes pierced into her daughter.
"Begin."
Harley felt her heartbeat spike, her whole body trembling as she realized she was potentially in trouble.
"We haven’t done anything wrong. Leonard is my classmate and my teammate. By chance, I met him while he was in search of battle armor and suggested that he pick something from our Velmura brand. D—Don’t worry, I can testify that he has the funds to afford our services!"
Valentina looked at her with disapproval.
"So you were just going to show him around? Then tell me, my daughter, why were you clinging to him so much that I got the impression you were about to jump him in the middle of my store, in broad daylight no less?"
She paused briefly, letting the silence settle.
"You know the engagement between you has been broken off for a long time, correct?"
"I—I..." Harley’s face slowly turned a rosy color out of embarrassment. Yet after a few seconds, she clenched her fists, her eyes igniting with anger.
"What does it have to do with you?!" She snapped at her mother.
"Stop trying to pry into my personal life! All you need to know is that I have brought a potential customer! That’s all!"
Valentina lifted her chin, her expression hardening.
"Harley, dear, I understand how you feel, but know that all I am doing is for your—"
"Cut the crap!" Harley yelled at the top of her lungs.
"You promised me that if I distanced myself from Leonard, his life wouldn’t be put in danger because of his low ranked Bloodline. But how did it all turn out?! There was an attempt on his life! By the man who was on track to marrying me no less! All just to acquire our business at a later date!"
She stomped with her foot using all the strength she could muster.
"Admit it! It was never about what was best for me, but what was most profitable! You were willing to discard your daughter without regard for her feelings if it meant expanding Velmura! Cooperating with the Royal Trade Organization looked like the perfect chance, until we realized they were on track to swallow us whole!"
Harley’s eyes began to well up with tears.
"I... Finally, after all this time, I got a moment with Leonard, and you just had to ruin it all! You could have chosen to look the other way, but you didn’t!"
Valentina hesitated, never having seen this side of her daughter before. After a moment, she closed her fan, reached out, and embraced Harley.
"I’m sorry, dear. As your mother, I didn’t realize I was pushing you too far. I should have been more mindful of your feelings."
Harley wiped her tears away.
"It’s all right. Just please stop deciding what’s best for me."
Soon after, the two returned to Leonard.
"I think my presence really wasn’t welcome here." He said, ready to leave. "I’ll make sure to quietly make my exit."
"Hold on." Valentina called out, halting him in place. "There is no way Velmura will turn down a customer. Please, follow me."
Leonard raised an eyebrow and threw a glance toward Harley, who shrugged, unsure what had gotten into her mother’s head now.
They entered a grand room and stopped before an armor set made out of shining gold.
"From looking at it, I know that it’s sturdy. However, it would weigh too much and hinder my movements." He analyzed.
Valentina shook her head with a smirk.
"Just try it on."
With nothing to lose, Leonard obliged. Once he finished putting on the helmet, the armor lit up.
There were runes engraved into it!
[Golden Scales]
[Rank: Legendary]
[Armor whose material makes it easy to channel mana in order to support engraved runes. Grants +30 points to Vitality, Agility, and Endurance when equipped. Almost weightless. When dismissed, the armor turns into golden scales that cover your body, providing constant protection.]
Leonard was astonished. Thanks to the armor’s boost, he felt faster and lighter after putting it on! Not to mention, the protective veil was capable of stopping otherwise lethal attacks.
With just a thought, he effortlessly dismissed it, feeling golden scales line up beneath his clothes, providing protection while remaining invisible.
"Judging by your expression, you liked it." Valentina remarked with a hint of pride in her voice.
"Yes, this is the best armor I have ever laid eyes on." Leonard admitted. "However, I fear such a treasure is far outside my price range."
"Is that so?" She gazed at him over her fan. "How many Merit Points do you possess?"
"Two thousand." He replied.
"Perfect. That is the exact price we sell it for."
"..."
Leonard blinked slowly.
"Are you serious?"
"Do you want it or not?" Valentina’s voice grew more stern.
"I do. Thank you for your hospitality."
"Good. Wait here while we finish the transaction." She nodded and instructed Harley to follow.
"Mother, I don’t know what to say." Harley spoke once they were out of Leonard’s earshot. "That armor normally costs much more than this. Why did you sell it for so cheap?"
"Why? Harley, do I really have to answer such a stupid question?" Valentina scoffed.
"Because my reckless daughter seems keen on following him. The last thing I want is for her to put her life in danger because Leonard’s armor failed him when it really mattered."
Not knowing what to say, Harley stared at the ground as she fidgeted with her fingers.
"There. Everything is done. Now get out of my sight... And I swear, if you ever yell back at me again, you will not be getting off lightly."
Harley glanced at her mother before pulling her into a big, unexpected hug.
"Thank you, Mom! I love you!"
Valentina watched as Harley sprang toward Leonard’s side.
"Stupid girl. Why waste your time on him?" She exclaimed, her eyes softening. "I suppose it’s forgiven. Youth is for making mistakes, after all..."
