Elizabeth halted in place, her heartbeat pounding in her ears.

"My mother?" She repeated in a whisper. "She... What does she have to do with you? She died while giving birth to me!"

The Heart of Frost remained upon the throne, its presence ever so imposing.

"Her labor might have finished her off. But her decline started much sooner than that. The moment she accepted my deal, her end had already been predetermined."

Stunned by the revelation, Elizabeth felt a headache creeping in.

"Do you mean... you are the one who caused her death?" She asked.

"Me? No. She only has herself to blame for failing to contain me. Ever since the beginning, she knew the risks and failed nonetheless." The Heart of Frost replied.

"I am a monster, plain and simple. Cursed and locked inside this weapon, my purpose is to eradicate all corruption that exists. Many have tried to master my power. Not a single one got close."

The Heart of Frost paused briefly.

"So, I arrived at a countermeasure. The longer my wielders use me, the deeper my grasp over their hearts grows... Eventually, they will either unlock the full potential of my power... or fail and give me access to their bodies. Should that moment ever come to pass, I shall freeze the world whole, bringing an end to the corruption and the Void."

With each passing second, the number of surging ghosts increased.

"Your mother had a fierce heart, but it wasn’t enough to hold me back. Her demise neared, and so did my plan, about to come to fruition... Yet in the end, she chose to fall not by my control, but by bringing you into this world."

"I see..." Leonard murmured.

"The Heart of Frost is a true weapon. It must have been created in the old times, when corruption ran more rampant than today. Its sole purpose is to eradicate it, even at the expense of taking the entire world."

Of course, he doubted that a single haunted weapon, regardless of how strong, could push back the entire Void. Still, its presence was threatening enough to make him realize that, if they could keep it under control, the Heart of Frost could prove to be an invaluable ally in the future.

"Then... in that case, I shall prove you wrong!" Elizabeth declared. "I will wield you. Not with my heart, but with my will. To prove that you shouldn’t erase those who seek your power. To achieve what my mother couldn’t!"

The Heart of Frost stared at her for a moment before erupting into laughter.

"All that talk, only to end up worse than your mother!" It mocked. "Look at you! Declaring your intentions from the safety of my master!"

"Your... master?" Leonard raised an eyebrow.

In response, the Heart of Frost swirled, its attention fixing not on Leonard, but on the pendant he wore.

"Don’t underestimate me, brat. The sole reason you have been allowed in my domain is because you carry a piece of my creator. Even though it is merely a fragment, I will never forget the one who forged me."

"The hell..." Leonard was rendered speechless, staring at his pendant. The more he learned about it, the more it seemed like it was connected to everything around him.

While he was left marveling over the leftover memento of his mother, Elizabeth gritted her teeth, her eyes sharpening as she strode forward.

"Wait!" He turned to stop her.

"No, don’t move. That is something I must do myself!"

However, Elizabeth was unwilling to rely on his support. She wanted to prove to herself and her mother that she could handle it alone.

When she took a step outside the protective range, she was instantly assaulted by a chorus of whispers. All varying in volume, yet all demanding that she open her heart to the monster residing within.

"Foolish child!" The Heart of Frost bellowed. "Nobody has ventured into my icy kingdom, yet you dare go straight for the source?!"

The temperature dropped as frost surged toward her, eager to break her will in a single stroke.

Elizabeth began to lose the luster of her beautiful face. Her skin grew deadly pale, her breathing rapid, with every fiber of her being screaming at her to turn back.

Despite the torment she was subjected to, she remained unyielding.

Turning back would mean admitting that she would never reach her mother’s heights. Returning to her father, having failed once again, unable to match her brother in his deeds like always.

"No!" She barked back against the chilling cold.

"Before you were forced to drain the life force of your wielders. However, this stops today... My mother will be the last sacrifice to your frost. From now on, you are under my command!"

"Pretentious! Ignorant! Idiotic! Idealistic!" The Heart of Frost roared, its form expanding, ready to swallow Elizabeth whole.

"Corruption cannot be defeated by mere conviction alone! Even the slightest hint of doubt would bring your demise!"

Frostbite spread from the tips of her fingers along her arms. Her eyelashes hardened into icicles, her thin lips turning blue.

"Then I will never falter in the face of uncertainty and impossible odds! You need a catalyst for your power, and I need a weapon. Our goals align. Therefore, we can cooperate. Become my blade and let me cut down anything standing in our way!"

"Hilarious! So the apple truly doesn’t fall far from the tree! You are no different from your mother!" The Heart of Frost expressed its amusement. Yet it saw how she was still walking against the storm.

"You don’t know when to give up, do you?!" Its form altered as the Heart of Frost created an outer shell in the shape of a colossal monster.

Its size grew until it towered over her like an ant before a god.

"Very well, then! Show me how wrong I am! Put an end to all corruption or submit your heart to me!"

A crack tore across the fabric of space.

"The pact has been formed! Don’t disappoint me, mortal!"

Leonard found himself back in Ironstone Fortress. A painful shock ran down his hand, repelling his palm away from the scythe.

He blinked slowly, adjusting to the real world, his eyes gradually falling upon Elizabeth.

She stood unmoving, her eyes a mixture of emotions as she stared at the weapon in her grasp. Her body didn’t shudder from pain, and her skin had once again regained its natural color.

"It... doesn’t hurt anymore. There aren’t any more voices." She spoke barely above a whisper.

The war scythe emitted its usual chill, both blades sharp enough to carve through boulders.

"Well, it’s good that things turned out for the better, right?" Leonard chuckled with a warm smile.

"..."

Elizabeth just stared at him, feeling tears starting to seep down her face. Before Leonard was able to notice her complex expression, she acted without thinking. She pulled him closer and enveloped him in a hug.

"Thank you so much..." She uttered quietly. "You... have no idea how much this means to me."

Surprised by the gesture, he embraced her back, a moment of comfortable silence stretching between them.

Sadly, the moment didn’t last long. A scholar who had been stationed to cut the overgrown black roots and vines upon the outpost walls shouted at the top of his lungs.

"Professor Albert! Everybody! I see soldiers approaching, and they carry the flag of Sandromia City!"
