Primordial Awakening: My Bloodline Evolves Infinitely
Chapter 128: Failure"Where did your confidence disappear?! COWARD! COWARD!"
Enraged, Leonard screamed toward the woods like a deranged manic, painfully limping forward as he tried to catch up with General Godfrey.
"Scholar Leonard!" Professor Albert reached him a few seconds later.
He had to forcibly pull Leonard backward before he could hurt himself.
"Let me go!" Leonard struggled against the clutches of his professor, unwilling to listen to reason.
"Scholar Leonard! You are in no condition to fight! Stay back!" Albert yelled, louder this time.
"No! I have to kill him!" Leonard insisted, trying and failing to overpower the professor. His exhausted body was barely able to stand upright.
"LEONARD!"
Dropping his honorifics, Albert shouted at the top of his lungs. The third time was the charm, as his words finally went through Leonard’s head, momentarily stopping him.
"Listen to me!" Albert put his hands on Leonard’s shoulders and lightly shook him.
"This is it! You are done! You can’t keep going like this! Any more and you will die!"
Leonard stared blankly at Albert’s expression. Usually, the professor was serious and dignified, yet now raw desperation was slipping through the cracks of his otherwise stoic persona.
"I... am done? But..." Leonard spoke barely above a whisper, his eyes darting toward the devastated woods.
The javelin showers he had unleashed upon the forest had toppled whole trees, churned up the earth below, shattered boulders, and cut down every form of vegetation and life that had stood in its way.
He didn’t know how many projectiles he had ultimately thrown, only that he kept going until he squeezed out every last bit of power his body possessed, leaving him utterly dry.
And even after all that... Godfrey had still managed to get away.
"But... I didn’t kill him?" His breathing grew ragged with every breath he took. "I failed?"
Albert’s expression shifted from worry to sheer disbelief.
At the end of the day, Leonard was still just a first-year scholar, an eighteen-year-old man. Had he really expected to be able to defeat a war veteran with decades of experience under his belt, who was not only much higher Level but also served as a General of the enemy army?
Before he was able to point out the clear flaw in Leonard’s thought process, a worried voice echoed from behind.
"Young Master!"
Miranda was running toward Leonard’s side, her concern palpable.
Her luminous golden eyes fixed on his figure. Only for her breath to hitch when she saw his condition up close.
A broken arrow embedded in his neck, his right arm cut off at the shoulder, both wounds crudely sealed with his recently learned Frost Touch. The ribs on one side were broken, and his whole body shook from sheer exhaustion.
He was stained with so much blood that it wasn’t clear which was his and which belonged to the enemies he had killed.
Miranda froze when she reached him. She had been meaning to embrace him ever since they were separated on the fortress walls, yet now that she looked at him, she was forced to pause.
Touching him carelessly held its own dangers, let alone hugging him.
"Miranda?" Recognizing her voice, Leonard turned to face her, feeling moisture welling up at the corners of his eyes.
"Y—Young Master, are you okay? Where does it hurt?" She tried to assess the full extent of his injuries, uncertain where to even start.
But Leonard didn’t share her worry.
"I am sorry." He spoke the words softly, stunning her.
"Y—You are sorry? What for?" Miranda asked, wondering if she had misheard.
"Godfrey survived. I gave it my all, yet it wasn’t enough... I wasn’t able to kill him." Leonard gulped painfully, the mere action sending shocks of agony across his body. "I am so sorry."
Miranda fought back tears. After a second, she softly embraced him for just a moment.
"Everything is fine. Let’s get you to a Healer first, okay?" She suggested, gently supporting him from one side.
"Alright." Leonard replied with a shaky voice.
Elizabeth arrived a few seconds later. Her eyes widened in complete shock.
After she got her bearings under control, she lightly bit her lower lip and went to support him from the opposite side.
When she made physical contact, she allowed her freezing ability to spread delicately, lowering his body temperature and bringing some semblance of comfort to his accumulated wounds.
"...Thank you." Leonard said quietly, unable to lift his head.
Elizabeth didn’t know what to say. After a moment, she realized that Albert was limping after them, holding one side of his chest.
"Professor Albert, are you hurt?"
"I will be fine." He replied flatly. "Focus on Leonard, instead of me."
With the deaths of the three Sergeants and the escape of General Godfrey, the ranks of the remaining Sandromia soldiers descended into full chaos.
Most abandoned their posts and made a desperate dash toward the wilderness, while the few that remained were easily picked off by the organized groups of scholars.
Finally, the battlefield grew silent, with all battles drawing to a close.
Nobody rejoiced, as everyone was exhausted beyond belief. Those who were still able to move helped the most gravely injured into Ironstone Fortress, where they could receive treatment.
Soon enough, Leonard and the rest made their way into the outpost.
Instantly, his eyes fixed on the medical tent where Godfrey had struck.
"Please, guys... don’t die."
Miranda and Elizabeth helped him go there.
Cassie had toppled to the ground, all strength leaving her legs from the fight. Still, she stubbornly refused to give up.
Positioning herself next to Winston, she held her staff above his open wound as she poured all the mana she possessed into healing him.
"Hold on just a little bit longer." Cassie begged.
Meanwhile, Samantha was over William’s body, struggling to mend his condition.
"Please, don’t leave me like this!"
Albert stepped forward, his expression heavy.
He glanced at Winston, noting that his chest was rising and falling, albeit weakly, but it was more than enough.
Then he crouched over William and placed two fingers against his neck, searching for a pulse.
"..."
A suffocating silence stretched.
Eventually, he pulled back his hand.
"I am sorry..." Albert shook his head, and closed William’s eyes. "William has passed away."
