Samantha lifted her gaze, her green hair tangled, while her blue eyes stared at Albert in stunned disbelief.

"Eh?"

Her lips trembled briefly as she processed the information.

Then her eyes returned to William, and she continued to apply her healing spell.

"No, he is still alive."

Albert’s expression grew somber for a moment.

"Samantha. I can tell when a person has passed away."

Her shoulders shook as she refused to look at him.

"No! He is still alive! I can save him! I know that I can save him!" She screamed.

"This is why I am here! This is why I picked the Healer class! You... You expect me to believe that he has died under my watch?! WHAT KIND OF NONSENSE IS THIS?! I refuse to accept this! William is still alive! He must be!"

Desperate, Samantha poured more of her mana into her attempts to heal him. The giant gash that marked his body knitted itself together, gradually closing, yet there was no indication of William waking up.

Since nothing seemed to work, she tried to shake him awake, his body remaining cold to the touch.

"Come on, open your eyes already! This is no time to be playing around!"

Albert shook his head. He had seen this display numerous times across different battlefields.

Slowly, he put a hand on her shoulder, almost startling her.

"Samantha, do you know why the Healer class is one of the hardest to master? It’s not because Healers tend to be weaker in combat, nor because their skills are more difficult to learn. The real reason is that very few people can stomach the pain."

His eyes drifted toward William’s motionless body.

"I can see that he meant a lot to you, and that is why it must sting even more to lose him... However, as a Healer, you need to face reality... your skills proved lacking, and your patient lost his life."

The professor paused briefly, letting the silence settle.

"You must not lose yourself in grief but spring toward the aid of another. Grieving over the dead can only prevent those who still draw breath from receiving the help they need to keep on living."

Samantha blinked slowly and glanced behind him.

Cassie was still doing her best to stabilize Winston’s condition.

Leonard stood tall, looking almost indistinguishable from a walking corpse.

If she were to waste too much time, they could turn beyond saving.

"I—I understand." Samantha replied, taking a shaky breath.

During their conversation, Leonard’s eyes remained locked on William, coming to terms with the fact that he had lost a friend.

"Thank you for bringing me here." He expressed his thanks to Elizabeth and Miranda without glancing in their direction.

"I am sorry to ask this of you. But if you aren’t injured, can you leave the medical tent? We don’t want it to become too crowded."

"But..." Miranda expressed her worry.

"Please." Leonard insisted.

"Okay..."

After exchanging a glance, the two exited the tent.

Quietly, Leonard walked over to a medical bed and settled onto it.

"I—I am sorry for making you wait." Samantha apologized, wiping tears from her eyes. "Let me check up on you."

Leonard shook his head and pointed toward Winston.

"Him first."

"But Cassie is already tending to Winston, and we can’t delay—"

"Samantha." Leonard interrupted and looked at her. His eyes, usually full of luster, seemed utterly dim.

"I am not losing anybody else."

Despite Samantha having begun treating William immediately after he sustained the grave injury, he died regardless. There was no guarantee that Cassie could save Winston on her own.

"As you can see, I have sealed my wounds. I am not in any immediate danger. We can’t say the same for Winston, however." Leonard elaborated.

"..."

Samantha hesitated for a fraction of a moment. In the end, she nodded and went to back up Cassie.

"Stimulated Recovery."

With her help, Winston’s healing accelerated. His left collarbone began to knit itself back together.

Soon enough, the giant wound had sealed completely. He remained unconscious, his face still pale. However, his breathing was more relaxed than before.

"Thank you." Cassie repeatedly bowed toward Samantha. Without her help, Winston’s chances of making it out alive had been slim.

The two Healers shifted their attention to Leonard, who was still sitting on the bed, looking toward William.

Albert remained in the tent in order to partake in Leonard’s treatment.

"The arrow embedded in your neck will complicate your treatment severely." Albert explained. "We would have to surgically remove it before we can begin the healing process."

Samantha and Cassie didn’t just rely on their healing skills. They had also studied human anatomy and were capable of performing operations. The same was true for Professor Albert, though in his case, he had picked up his knowledge on the battlefield.

Leonard nodded, giving them the go-ahead.

"Before we start, take this." Albert handed him a vial.

"What is this?" Leonard narrowed his eyes.

"An anesthetic medication." Albert replied. "It will put you to sleep during the procedure."

"You expect me to willingly put myself into a helpless state? What if the enemy returns? What if a monster attacks?" Leonard argued with a frown. "Take it back. I don’t need it."

"We need you to stay stationary." Albert retorted. "Suddenly jolting from pain can cause further complications."

"Just do it. I can’t feel any worse than I already do anyway."

Leonard wasn’t boasting or trying to act tough. He meant every single word.

Albert heaved a deep sigh and nodded toward the two girls.

They flanked Leonard from both sides while Albert was meant to remove the arrow himself.

While the procedure was underway, the entrance flung open, and two elves walked inside.

"Plamen, didn’t I make it clear that I am fine?" Arabella gazed at the male elf. "Suddenly entering without being invited is ill-mannered."

"That doesn’t matter, Princess! Your condition is of utmost importance—" Plamen halted mid-sentence when he noticed the threat Leonard was enduring.

Arabella’s eyes darkened, she hadn’t meant to intrude. She cast a hostile gaze toward Plamen, who muttered a silent apology, yet wasn’t willing to leave the tent, insisting that she should get checked up after Leonard.

Twenty minutes later, Albert wiped the sweat that had gathered across his forehead and dropped the arrow he had taken out inside a container.

Leonard blinked slowly, surprised that it had ended so fast. Using his left arm, he massaged his neck from every angle. His skin had turned smooth, as though he had just been to a spa.

"We healed your neck and your broken ribs." Cassie said timidly. "However, restoring a severed arm is beyond our expertise."

He nodded and glanced at where his right arm was supposed to be. The frost he had used to seal the wound was gone, as the Healers had caused new skin to grow over the area.

"Don’t despair. Ironstone Fortress will be turned into a hub from where we will launch other operations during the war. A Healer who can regrow limbs will come once we finish setting up the whole place." Albert put his worries to rest.

"Is that so..." Leonard breathed a little easier. Even for him, fighting with a missing hand would limit him severely.

Not wanting to intrude any longer, he thanked them for the help and headed out. There were other wounded scholars that needed to be tended to.

"Human." Plamen called out, stopping Leonard before he left. "You fight well."

Leonard arched an eyebrow. "Um... you too?"

Once he made his exit, Arabella glared at Plamen.

"What was that about?" She hissed.

"Acknowledging another warrior?" Plamen blinked slowly. "I mean, he didn’t even flinch while he was receiving treatment."

Arabella looked toward the exit and averted her gaze with an ever-so-slight blush.

"You are just embarrassing me in front of him..." She mumbled. "Don’t do it again."
