Outside the medical tent, Leonard surveyed his surroundings.

Most of the scholars were resting, some groaning as they lay scattered across the ground, while others patiently waited for their turn to be checked up by the Healers.

Fortunately, Samantha and Cassie weren’t the only Healers in the party. Otherwise, they might have just collapsed from exhaustion after tending to so many people.

Honestly, Leonard was beyond tired, yet staying still in one place made him uncomfortable, as he had nothing else to think about other than William’s death.

He sought to take a short tour through the fortress to inspect the damage inflicted by the attack.

"Hey, look at him."

"Goodness! His arm is gone?!"

"I don’t remember anyone in the Elite grade with missing limbs. He must have gotten his injury during the battle."

"Wait! Isn’t he the one who said he bore a Common Bloodline? He survived the siege?"

"Common Bloodline, my ass! Some say that he was the monster that broke Sandromia’s formation from the rear!"

"How is that possible?"

"I don’t care! I am just glad that he is on our side!"

Given the injury he had sustained, Leonard had become the center of attention. It was rare for the young awakeners to see anyone close to their age with a severed limb, much less someone walking so nonchalantly despite it.

Leonard remained unfazed. He was used to being the subject of gossip.

Though a familiar voice echoing from behind made him pause.

"Leonard?"

Harley stared at him, her eyes going wide.

Thud!

Unconsciously, the grip on her rapier faltered, and she dropped the weapon onto the ground.

She took a few cautious steps forward and glanced at his right shoulder.

"So it’s true... Elizabeth and Miranda told me about the state you were in. I didn’t believe them at first, but now..."

Harley gulped audibly.

"Does it hurt?"

"No." Leonard replied.

She hesitated for a moment.

"Then... What about William?"

"He didn’t make it." Leonard shook his head.

"I... am just glad that you are alive..." Harley admitted, her palms curling into fists.

She quietly approached him, stopping only when an arm separated them.

"Do you know how scared I was when I saw you getting shot through the neck?!"

Raising her gaze, she stared into his eyes.

And then she punched him in the left shoulder.

"Ugh! What was that for?!" Leonard complained, massaging the struck area. She hadn’t used her full strength, but the blow stung nevertheless.

"Punishment for making me worry about you!" Harley bellowed, resting her hands on her waist. "Don’t you ever let yourself get captured by the enemy again! You hear?! Otherwise I will not hold back next time!"

"And here I thought I would get to see your soft side." Leonard chuckled lightly.

"Hmph!" Harley turned around, averting her gaze. "D—Don’t think so highly of yourself!"

They went on to meet with Elizabeth and Miranda.

When the two noticed that Leonard had regained some color in his face, they were able to breathe out a sigh of relief that they had been unconsciously holding.

"It’s good to see you walking on your own again." Elizabeth exclaimed in approval.

"Indeed." Leonard nodded. "So, what are our losses?"

"It’s still hard to tell." Miranda answered. "Besides Russell and William, whose deaths we confirmed with our own eyes, it’s hard to distinguish the corpses since the roots are reducing them to husks."

The unleashed monster that was still residing in the fortress continued to be a problem. Unless they quickly eliminated it, fully claiming the outpost wouldn’t be possible.

Additionally, with its presence, there was always the chance of another awakener accidentally scraping their hand against the thorns and succumbing to the plague.

"If I have to be honest, I can’t let myself relax with a monster near us." Leonard glanced toward the fort.

By now, they had searched most of the structures inside the fortress. The last place they had yet to properly check was the fort positioned in the very center.

’Looking at the pattern of the vines and roots, it’s almost like they are all converging on a single point, with the fort in the middle of it all.’ Leonard realized.

"Why don’t we go and slay it?" He suggested. "Given its nature, I doubt that it has any way to defend itself."

The three women exchanged glances. Although all of them were tired, they had to admit that they would really rather not sleep with the creature in the vicinity if they could help it.

"I agree. But at the first sign of trouble, we will retreat." Miranda declared.

Considering that the rest of the scholars were either too exhausted or too weak to follow them, they chose not to bother them for help. Without further ado, they headed toward the fort.

"There has been something bothering me for a while..." Elizabeth threw a subtle glance at Miranda. "When we found Leonard hurt, you ran toward him and called him ’Young Master’ several times. Why is that?"

Harley blinked slowly and gazed at Leonard. Not many knew about his past, but explaining Miranda’s presence wasn’t possible otherwise.

"She knows my father is Gideon." Leonard put her worries to rest.

"Well, that simplifies things." Harley smiled. "She has been appointed to be his bodyguard and maid... They have been living together for a long time, so you could say that she is the closest person to Leonard."

Elizabeth’s icy demeanor cracked, and her eyes narrowed in suspicion.

’Personal bodyguard and maid? Not to mention living together?!’ Her mind raced as her eyes involuntarily dropped down Miranda’s body.

From just a glance, she came to realize that Miranda’s figure was beyond stunning. Even her modest clothing couldn’t hide her captivating charm. Elizabeth had just never bothered to think too deeply about things like that.

"Living together? But... you don’t seem that much older." She couldn’t help but comment, staring blankly at Miranda.

In response, Miranda hid her lips and giggled adorably. "Correct! To let you know, I am just a few years older than the Young Master, almost like an older sister."

Miranda was happy that she could drop her act as an assistant for just a bit.

"Right..."

Elizabeth couldn’t put into words how strange she felt.

All this time, Miranda had been by Leonard’s side? By all accounts, she seemed to have it all. She was beautiful, strong in battle even without relying on mana, had an easygoing and humble personality, and was experienced due to being a few years older... the full package.

’Strange... what is this feeling in my chest? It can’t be jealousy, can it?’ Elizabeth pondered for a few seconds.

"Wait."

She paused in her stride and stared at Harley.

"How come you know all this?"

Elizabeth was part of the Starlight household, so it was natural that she would come to learn about Leonard’s background. Yet Harley’s family wasn’t nearly as influential.

"Me?" Harley blinked innocently. "Ah... because we were engaged."

"P—Pardon?" For the first time, Elizabeth stuttered. "Engaged?"

"Yes, but things broke off in the end." Harley elaborated, sparing the details.

’Unbelievable...’ Elizabeth was rendered speechless, her gaze sweeping between Harley and Miranda.

Not just one, but Leonard had such close connections with both of them?

Noticing that the women behind him had stopped, he turned around.

"Is everything alright?"

"..."

Silently, Elizabeth flicked her hair to the side and walked up to the front.

"Yes, everything is alright." She replied flatly.

"...?!"

Leonard frowned.

"Is it just me, or is she in a sour mood all of a sudden?" He wondered aloud, with no way to find an answer.
