Primordial Red Goblin

Chapter 27: Strangers In The Forest

"Stop doing that." Lucy cried as she healed me.

"I need you to be able to do your job if my wife gets injured." I said.

"I understand but do you have to keep hurting yourself?" She cried.

I could see tears beginning to form in her eyes so I decided to stop, for now.

"Alright. I won’t do it again. For awhile at least." I sighed.

After my hand was healed she wiped her eyes.

"Thank you. I understand why you did it but that doesn’t mean I have to like it." She said.

"How much xp did you get that last time?" I asked.

"It was a bigger and deeper cut so it gave me five xp." She said.

"Okay we will rest for ten more minutes before we begin again." I said.

"So how dangerous is this forest?" Lucy asked.

"For non combatant commoners it’s extremely dangerous. For low level combatants it’s fairly dangerous. But for me it’s only mildly dangerous. As a red goblin I have enhanced senses so I can see in the dark and my sense of smell and hearing allows me to detect people and monsters from great distances." I explained.

After ten minutes were up I stood up.

"Alright let’s go." I said.

We continued walking through the forest until Lucy spoke up.

"Wait a minute. You said you have enhanced hearing? Does that mean you heard every word Sarah and I said before we stopped to eat?" She asked.

"Every word." I said.

Sarah started laughing and patted Lucy on the shoulder.

"That was supposed to be a private conversation." Lucy mumbled.

Two hours after midday I caught a scent and stopped walking. After turning my nose into the wind I took my helmet and put it on. Sarah caught the hint and pulled Lucy behind her.

"Maybe I should have put my armor on before we left." Sarah whispered.

"What is it? Goblins?" Lucy whispered to Sarah.

"Human men. Two of them and they are coming this way. I don’t think they know we are here yet." I said.

"What do we do?" Lucy asked.

"Nothing. Just stay behind me." I said.

After twenty minutes Two human men appeared from the brush and stopped when they spotted us. They held their empty hands up at shoulder level.

"Hello stranger. We mean no harm to you and your women. We are just out here gathering herbs to sell to the potion shop." One man said.

"Carry on then. But don’t get too close." I said.

The men slowly walked closer.

"Are you all from Emerald City? That’s some expensive looking armor you have there." The second man said.

They continued walking closer.

"That’s close enough." I said once they were thirty feet away.

"Oh come on now. There’s no reason to be that way. We can be friends can’t we?" The first man said as they continued getting closer.

I summoned my mithril sword from my ring. Once Sarah saw my sword appear she summoned hers too.

"I said that’s close enough." I growled.

The men froze and glanced at each other for a second. One of them nodded and they both drew hidden short swords from the back of their coats and charged at me. I charged back at them and deflected a swing from the first man’s sword and punched him in the nose with the gauntlet of my empty hand crushing his nose. Blood squirted from his nose and he dropped his sword and fell to his knees with his hands over his nose. I then swung at the second man. He tried to block my sword but missed and my sword cut clean through his wrist. His sword hit the ground with his fingers still wrapped around the hilt. He grabbed the stubb of his arm with his other hand and screamed.

"You broke my nose." The first man screamed.

"You tried to attack us. Why?" I asked.

"Fuck you, that’s why." He said still holding his face.

"Fine then. I’ll just kill both of you and be done with it." I said raising my sword.

"Go ahead. If you don’t I’ll find you and kill you myself." He said.

I brought my sword down on the back of his neck and removed his head. Then I turned to the screaming man with one hand.

"What about you?" I asked.

He didn’t answer. He just glared at me. I swung my sword and ran it across his throat. His eyes went wide as blood ran down his chest before he fell face first into the dirt. I signaled for the girls to follow me and we left the scene of the fight in case they had friends nearby that heard the screaming. After an hour of walking Lucy spoke up.

"Erik. Are you okay?" She asked.

"Yeah I’m fine. Why? Are you okay?"

"You killed two men an hour ago and haven’t said a word since."

"I was staying quiet and listening to see if there were others nearby."

"Oh. That was scary."

"It’s okay. That’s why I told you two to stay behind me."

"How did you know they were lying about picking herbs?"

"I didn’t. Not until they kept walking straight toward me. If they were gathering herbs and came across a stranger wearing armor in the forest they would have walked a wide circle around me instead of continuing to walk directly toward me. That’s when I knew they intended to rob us, which is why I took out my sword."

"Oh. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for protecting me."

"You don’t have to thank me for taking care of you."

"Yes I do. Just because you own me doesn’t mean I can’t still be grateful for your protection."

"Okay. You’re welcome."

"Yes, thank you." Sarah added.

"You are my wife, you can thank me properly tonight." I teased.

"HA!" Sarah laughed.

"Alright let’s keep going. We still have a long way to go." I said.
