"This is the man who donated a gold coin." Sister Lilly told them.
The other women gasped and each one took a turn hugging and thanking me.
"Thank you so much sir. We were down to our last bag of grain to feed the kids when sister Lilly ran in holding the gold coin in her hand." The woman said.
"Where are all the kids?" I asked looking around.
"The older ones are still at school but the younger ones are out back playing." She said.
The sisters led us through to the back door and we entered the back yard. It was just a big dirt patch with a few toys scattered around it. There was another sister watching over two small children. Disappointed again.
"So the city lord doesn’t give you any funding and the people of this city don’t donate enough to keep this place presentable?" I asked.
All four women looked down at the ground.
"The Goddess provides everything we need." The sisters said in unison.
’Doesn’t look that way.’ I thought to myself.
"Sister Lilly, what is the condition of this building?" I asked.
Sister Lilly looked up at me shocked by the question before looking at the other sisters.
"Well the roof leaks when it rains. A few of the windows are broken. The wind blows in even when the doors and windows are closed. Some of the kids’ beds are broken. Several of the bedroom doors are off their hinges. Some of the floorboar-"
I raised my hands and cut her off.
"Make a list and give me a number for the repairs." I said.
All the sisters audibly gasped and they grabbed their chests.
"Mister Red, that would require more than ten gold coins. Maybe even fifteen." Sister Lilly stuttered.
"Make the list. Ask the local tradesmen for price quotes on the repairs and next time you see me give me a number." I said.
The sisters just stared up at me speechless for a full minute.
"Yes mister Red. We will get that done for you." Sister Lilly said.
"I would like a tour." I said.
"Yes sir. Please follow me." She said.
We followed sister Lilly as the other three sisters ran across the backyard to inform the other sister of the news. Sister Lilly showed us the kitchen. The stove was in bad condition and several cabinet doors were missing.
"Include the missing doors and this damaged stove in the list of repairs." I instructed her.
"Yes sir." She bowed.
She led us to the next room.
"This is the day room where the kids play when the weather is too bad to go outside." She explained.
"Where are the toys? And the children’s books? What are they supposed to do in here to pass time?" I asked.
She walked over to a chest not even half full of toys and opened a cupboard with three small books.
"Continue the tour please." I said.
She led us to the stairway and we went upstairs.
"The boys sleep on this floor." She said.
Each room had two beds, over half of which were broken in some way. The blankets were tattered and the pillows had holes in them. Nearly half of the doors were on broken hinges. We followed her to the third floor.
"This floor is where the girls sleep." She said.
This floor was just as bad as the second floor.
"What is the capacity of this place?" I asked.
"Each floor has ten rooms. Two beds per room makes twenty kids per floor. We have thirty-seven children. We have nineteen girls and eighteen boys." She said.
"Take me to the nearest shop that sells beds for children." I said.
She looked up at me wide eyed.
"What? Now?" She asked.
"Yes. Now." I said.
We followed her for nearly half an hour to the shop.
"How can I help you? Asked the man inside.
"How much for a child sized bed?" I asked.
"A child sized bed? What kind? A frame and a mattress, with or without with head and footboards?" He asked.
I looked around and saw a bed with a plain headboard and footboard long enough and wide enough for one person and pointed at it.
"Like that one." I said.
"That one is two silver." He said.
"I need forty of them. How soon can you have them? I asked.
"We have more than that in stock right now." He said.
"How much to have them delivered to the orphanage and to remove the beds they currently have?" I asked.
"Well since they are all going to the same place we can give a group discount for the delivery and removal of the old beds. We can do it for an additional twenty-five silver." He said.
"Do you have blankets and pillows?" I asked
"Yes sir, follow me." He said.
We followed him to the linen section. There were bedsets of several colors. Pinks and yellows and other light colors for girls and blues and greens and other darker colors for boys.
"How much?" I asked.
"Each bed set comes with sheets, blankets, and pillow cases. I can add the pillows as well. That is one silver per set." He said.
I turned to sister Lilly.
"Go pick out forty sets. Twenty for the boys and twenty for the girls." I said.
By this point sister Lilly was in tears and shaking in disbelief. She nodded her head while wiping tears from her face and walked to the blankets.
"How soon can you have everything delivered?" I asked the man.
"We can have have it done by the end of the day tomorrow." He said.
I handed him one gold forty-five.
"Get it done." I said.
After sister Lilly picked out the bed sets she handed them to the man. Then she returned to me still in tears.
"Now take me to a clothing store that sells children’s clothes." I Said.
"Yes sir. Thank you sir. Goddess bless you mister Red." She cried and hugged me.
