Primordial Red Goblin

It smelled of the pine oil used to waterproof the leather. The body was a thin gambeson under a hard leather breast plate with overlapping leather scales over the stomach and lower back for flexibility. It had hard leather pauldrons with neck guards. There were hard leather bracers over the forearms and an archer’s glove on one hand. The legs were a hard leather cuisse over the thighs with knee cops and greaves over the shins. She had on matching leather boots.

"How does it feel? I asked.

"It’s a little stiff like he said but it feels great." She said as she moved her body into different positions to feel how it moves.

I paid the four gold for the armor while Amber ran back to the changing room and put her dress and flats back on. After she came out I took her to an archery shop to find her a bow. She chose a small recurve bow that fit her size perfectly and I paid seven silver for it. I also paid five silver to buy her five sheaves of arrows within steel broadheads.

"Time to go get Patty." I said as I walked out of the archery shop.

We walked to Patty’s house. Without saying a word Lucy grabbed her hand and pulled her along as we turned and walked down the street.

"Where are we going?" She asked.

"I told you I have a surprise for you." I said.

"What is it that you had to drag me out of my house to give me?" She questioned.

"It’s too big to fit inside that house." I replied.

Her eyes narrowed as she looked at me and remained silent the rest of the way. We came to a small house in a much better neighborhood and walked up to the door.

"Where are we? Who lives here?" She asked.

"You do." I said as I handed her the key.

She stared at the key for a full minute before slowly looking up at me.

"What? What did you just say?" She stuttered.

"As a wedding gift to Lucy I bought you this house." I said.

She looked back at the key and then at Lucy.

"Go ahead mom, take the key and go inside your new home. I want to see what it looks like." Lucy said.

Patty’s shaky fingers rose up and took the key before she inserted it into the lock and turned it. The lock clicked open and she pulled the key out before pushing the door open. We followed her around the house as she looked at each room before going to the backyard.

"Is this really all for me?" She asked.

"Yes. It’s in my name but I bought it for you." I said.

Patty wrapped her arms around me in a hug.

"Goddess bless you." She whispered.

"Lucy will go with you to your old home and use her ring to help you move your things real quick." I said.

Lucy grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the house.

"Hurry, we still have other things to do today." Lucy told Patty.

The rest of us waited for Lucy and Patty to return.

"This really is a nice house." Amber said.

"Once we leave the city and build our clan in the middle of the forest I will build us a home fit for royalty." I said.

"Then we must hurry up and return to the forest to hunt for orc caves." Sarah said.

"If we can find ten or eleven orc hoards like the last one we will have the coin we need to begin our clan." I said.

After forty-five minutes Lucy and Patty returned. Lucy took all of Patty’s things out of her ring and we left. We walked to the orphanage to get the list I asked for. Once we arrived at the orphanage sister Lilly greeted us and handed me the list. It had everything from the loose and broken floorboards to the leaks in the roof. To repair everything wrong with the building the estimated price was thirteen gold twenty-five silver. I handed the list back to sister Lilly and gave her fourteen gold coins.

"Make sure everything on this list gets fixed and I gave you extra in case you find anything else that needs repaired." I said.

"Mister Red sir may I ask a question." Sister Lilly asked.

"What is it?" I asked.

"With everything you’ve done for us do you plan on becoming this orphanage’s sponsor?" She asked.

"What is that?" I asked.

"Please follow me." She said.

She gathered the other sisters and led everyone upstairs to the attic away from the children.

"On very rare occasions a wealthy individual will become a sponsor for an orphanage. A sponsor essentially buys the orphanage and its assets from the church under the condition they keep the orphanage operational." She explained.

"Its assets?" I asked.

"Yes, everything that belongs to the orphanage. When the church of the Goddess establishes an orphanage they assign it assets and if someone decides to sponsor the orphanage those assets stay with the orphanage." She explained.

"What are the assets of this orphanage?" I asked.

"The land it’s built on, the building itself and the sisters that work in it." She explained.

"WHAT?" I exclaimed.

Sister Lilly continued to stare at me while the other four looked at the floor.

"The sisters that work for it? You are property that belongs to this orphanage?" I asked.

"We prefer to be called assets but yes." She said.

"And you’re okay with this?" I asked.

"Like I said it’s very rare for someone to actually sponsor one of the church’s orphanages so nearly all of the sisters assigned to them never belong to one that gets sponsored. It simply doesn’t happen often enough for the sisters to worry about it.’ She explained.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

"Because after everything you have done for us that is what I thought you were doing." She said.
