[CASTLE BLACK; SAM'S ROOM]

[There is a knock on the door. SAM grabs his knife.]

"A drastic reaction to a knock on the door" Rhaegar frowned.

"He's injured" Gendry pointed out. "He's probably got ganged up on or some shit now that Jon's not there."

The boy was right, now that Rhaegar got a better look, it was quite obvious. How had he missed it the first time...

"Who's there?"

"Olly."

[SAM puts the knife down.]

"Come in."

[OLLY enters]

"I heard what happened."

"Not to worry. Men brawl from time to time. It's only natural."

Jon's lips pursed. Without him there, nobody was holding themselves back. Sam did not belong there, no matter how anyone looked at it. Samwell Tarly did not belong there.

[OLLY sets a tray of food on SAM'S bed.]

"Figured you were hungry."

"You're a good lad."

"Wanted to ask you something. If you've got the time."

"He doesn't approve of Gilly" Arya frowned.

"Gilly is still from Beyond the Wall. And Olly's parents were killed by Wildlings if I remember right. You can't expect him to be happy right away" Robb explained.

"But Gilly was not part of that! How can he hate her for that?"

"For some people, it's enough to be of the same group or bloodline. He may not hate Gilly, but he is uncomfortable."

"It's not right" Arya muttered.

"It's not."

"I need to check on baby Sam."

"She named her baby Sam? That's cute" Sansa said with a small smile.

"Sam was the first one to treat her right, so it's not a surprise" Margaery smiled. She was in a far better mood now, seeing Cersei disgraced.

[She exits the room.]

"Now then. How can I help?"

"It's about the Lord Commander."

"This should be fun" Jon muttered. Who knows what the boy was feeling about him...

"He's going up to Hardhome to save all them wildlings. Wildlings killed my mom and dad. They killed everyone in my village."

"We've been fighting them for years."

"That's not a good reply to his statement" Lyanna frowned. Sam has interesting ways of speaking...

"This wasn't a fight. We were farmers and they slaughtered us. So why's he saving them?"

"Wildlings are people, just like us. There are good ones and bad ones."

"The one he's travelling with, the one with the red beard, he led the raid on my village. How can he trust him?"

"I've seen the army of the dead. I've seen the white walkers, and they're coming for us, for all the living. And when it's time we'll need every last man we can find."

"But what if we let the wildings through the gates and they cut our throats while we sleep?"

"Jon's taking a risk, but he has to. We don't stand a chance otherwise. Sometimes a man has to make hard choices, choices that might look wrong to others but you know are right in the long run."

"He should have started with that" Rickard frowned. "the boy must understand why Jon's doing what he's doing. None of this they're humans too or good wildling bad wildling. The boy needs to understand that anyone not on this side of the wall will only add to the armies of the dead. That should be all they care about."

"Hard to do when the ones being helped have been an enemy all your life" Brandon added.

"Once upon a time the West and the South were enemies as well. Then Aegon the Conqueror came and they allied against him. The concept of the enemy of my enemy is my friend, no matter how briefly, is lost on them all and that's going to spell their ruin!"

"Then it's a good thing we're seeing things and learning then" Ned spoke.

Rickard looked at his son and gave a nod.

"We need to be smart about this."

"We do"

[HARDHOME]

[The ships full of Crows and Wildlings dock at Hardhome. JON and TORMUND get out together. They walk to meet the men and women of Hardhome, led by the LORD OF BONES.]

"Lord of Bones. Been a long time."

"Last time I saw you the little crow was your prisoner. The other way around now. What happened?"

"War."

"You call that a war? The greatest army the North has ever seen cut to pieces by a Southern king."

"Greatest army" Renly snorted. "An assortment of undisciplined men and women do not make an army. Discipline, leadership and skills, without those it's a mob!"

"We should gather the elders and find somewhere quiet to talk."

"You don't give the orders here."

"I'm not giving an order."

"Why aren't you in chains?"

"He's not my prisoner."

"What is he?"

"We're allies."

[The Hardhome wildlings complain loudly.]

"Well this is going to go well then" Jon sighed. "Stubborn, every last of them, just like the Night's Watch."

"It's surprising how much these two people are similar to one another in certain regards" Daenerys noted.

"It's always the like-minded people who get along the least..."

"We're not here to fight. We're here to talk."

"Is that right? You and the pretty crow do a lot of talking, Tormund. And when you're done talking, do you get down on your knees and suck his cock-"

[TORMUND grabs the LORD OF BONES' staff from him and beats him to death with it.]

"Gather the elders and let's talk."

"That's one way to calm the masses and get them to listen" Brandon snorted.

[HARDHOME; CABIN]

[JON is surrounded by KARSI, a WILDING CHIEFTESS, LOBODA, a THENN, a Wildling elder, and various other Wildlings.]

"My name's Jon Snow. I'm Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We're not friends. We've never been friends. We won't become friends today. This isn't about friendship. This is about survival. This is about putting a 700-foot wall between you and what's out there.'

"A good start. Straight to the point without too much beating about" Rickard nodded in approval.

"Since when do the crows give 2 shits if we live?"

"In normal times we wouldn't. But these aren't normal times. The white walkers don't care if a man's Free Folk or Crow. We're all the same to them. Meat to their army. But together we can beat them."

"Beat the white walkers? Good luck with that. Run from them, maybe."

"Run where? They'll be everywhere, and any man, woman or child that dies will become theirs" Lyanna muttered.

"It's wishful thinking more than a plan" Jon muttered.

[JON holds the bag full of Dragonstone to KARSI. She looks at it hesitantly Before examining the glass in shock.]

"Dragonglass. A man of the Night's Watch used one of these daggers to kill a walker."

"You saw this?"

"No. But I trust the man."

"I wonder how many would take word of mouth over actual proof" Brandon the Elder muttered.

"There are old stories about Dragonglass."

"That might help" Ned said with a small smile.

"There are old stories about ice spiders big as hounds."

"And with the things we've seen you don't believe them?"

"Tyrion, that one sounds like you" Jaime whispered to his brother.

Tyrion rolled his eyes. Of course, his brother was talking about the Grumpkins and Snarks comment from the beginning.

"Come with me and I'll share these weapons. There are good lands south of the wall. The Night's Watch will allow you through the tunnel and allow your people to farm those lands. I knew Mance Rayder. He never wanted a war with the Night's Watch, he wanted a new life for his people. For you. We're prepared to give you that new life."

"If...?"

"If you swear you join us when the real war begins."

"A good option" Lyanna nods.

"Where is Mance?"

"He died."

"How?"

[JON pauses]

"I put an arrow through his heart."

[The wildlings in the cabin start to riot.]

"Well shit" Robb sighed. Things were going so well too...

"I say we send the Lord Commander back to Castle Black with no eyes."

[LOBODA brandishes his axe.]

Lyanna grabbed Jon's arm in fright..
