Chapter 429

In the familiar white room called the System space, Daphne hangs the sixth portrait on the wall.

She makes sure it is straight. Blue eyes of the figure in the portrait look at her—leaning against her elbow, lying down facing forward, a small smile on her face. Her tail is half-immersed in the water, shimmering beautifully.

Lorelei.

The portrait falls in line with the others. On both walls: Jiang Yuxi, Evelyn, Estella, Nima, Vivienne, Lorelei. All of them. All of her.

The space, once a small cubicle—is bigger now and extremely empty save for the paintings that hang there.

Daphne looks at them with longing and adoration.

[Host. The mission was 78% complete, earning 3,900 SP from the 5,000 SP total.]

A purple orb floats near her. Daphne turns to face it.

She looks the same as she did when she first bound to the System. But something is different now. Her eyes—still dark—are now inhuman in a way, with an odd kind of wisdom and detachment that comes from a long life. It is not a surprise. If one were to accumulate the amount of time she has been alive, it would add up to over three centuries.

System 404 is not bothered by this. It is a natural progression of System hosts as time proceeds. It is just that unlike most hosts, his host has something that brings back her humanity.

The orb looks at the portraits faintly.

"Only?" Daphne asks. "Should I aim for 100% harem breakdown?"

[That is to the host’s discretion. It brings the total amount of SP to 5,159 with the leftover SP from before.]

"Not bad, I suppose."

[Would the host like to head into the next world?]

"Yes."

Like the previous world, immediately after world completion, Daphne had picked up a canvas and begun to paint all her memories with Lorelei, pouring them all into the ink and brush strokes. The paintings here are not just paintings but instead physical manifestations of lives she has lived and loved, afraid that one day her mind will not be capable of keeping them all.

In a pack, a little girl no older than seven years old was peacefully playing alone.

A group of other unruly children approached her.

"Well, well. If it isn’t the bastard with the weird smell," one of the little boys said.

She ignored them.

"Weird smell."

"Weird smell."

"Weird smell."

The little girl looked up, irritated. Her face was extremely familiar—dark eyes, dark hair. She looked out of place in this pack, where everyone seemed to have European ancestry. She alone stood out with seemingly East Asian looks, coupled with her "weird smell." It had made her often the target of bullying, despite the fact that she was born in this pack.

"Don’t you have anything better to do?" she asked, irritated.

"Why are you not a wolf?" A blonde little boy asked, who seemed like the leader of this group.

"Why does your mother have four mates?" the girl snapped.

All the children went quiet. This was a sore spot for the boy.

"It’s because the Moon Goddess said so," the boy snapped. "Besides, unlike you, I’m not a bastard who doesn’t know their father."

"I’m not a bastard," the girl snapped. "And if it really was the work of the Moon Goddess, you’d look like all your fathers, not just one."

A fight broke out immediately.

The boy lunged at her.

She met him head-on. The boy was the strongest in his age group—a future Alpha. Except when it came to this little girl, that was not the case.

She was stronger. Faster. And way more ruthless.

Even though she couldn’t fully shift, she could partially shift. Her claws extended, slicing across the boy’s arm. He yelped, stumbling back.

"Get her!" he shouted.

Another child, terrified, shifted into a wolf cub and ran toward the village, howling for adults.

In a couple of hours, around a bonfire, a meeting was called.

Against the little girl and her mother—who held her daughter in her arms in a protective stance.

The little boy from earlier was also in his mother’s arms. She was a beautiful white-haired woman, surrounded by four large men.

"This is unnecessary," the mother of the girl said. "It was a fight between children. A pack trial is too much."

She had red, rusty hair that danced with the fire and green eyes. She was beautiful in a way that did not fall behind the white-haired woman with the four men.

"It cannot be a mere fight between pups," the white-haired woman said. "Had they not been pulled apart, my son might have lost a limb."

She earned a growl from a large man standing behind her with blonde hair—the Alpha who looked exactly like the boy.

"Is that not the way of wolves, though?" the girl’s mother replied. "Strength rules all."

"Not with children!" the man snapped, making the spectators take a step back.

But she did not flinch. She held her daughter in her arms and did not back down.

That was when a handsome man who looked like her stepped in.

"Bullying my sister and niece now?" He gave a slight bow, obviously not respecting the Luna at all. "That is beneath you, Luna."

The white-haired woman’s face scowled. There was obviously bad blood between the two.

"As Luna, and mother of this pack, I have to think of the wolves’ safety," she said. "Had the one in a fight with her not been my son, but a normal pup—what would have happened?"

"She is seven, yet cannot shift," one voice said. "Rogue and feral. I do not know what sired her, but it is clear she is too dangerous to be in the pack."

"That is not fair!" the little girl argued. "They followed me and started the fight!"

Her mother pulled her closer, her hand stroking her dark hair in a soothing, steady motion.

"Sshhh," she said.

"This is ridiculous," Her uncle snapped. "An obvious abuse of power. If you are unhappy with me, Luna, do not take it out on them."

That was when the four Alphas started to growl. Everyone went on alert.

"Well, isn’t this interesting."

That was when the four Alphas started to growl. Everyone went on alert.

"Well, isn’t this interesting."

A voice from the shadows said. The owner of the voice stepped into the light from the fire.

A seemingly handsome, tall and slender East Asian man, dressed in a black dress shirt, slacks, and coat appeared.
