Chapter 435: Sad reallyChapter 435: Seraphina
Only after meeting my mates and living elsewhere have I realized just how selfish the Redmoon Pack is.
I have always felt out of place there. It was not just Eric rejecting our mate bond in front of the whole pack that made me dislike Redmoon. It was everything. The way they looked at me. The way they whispered. The way they made me feel like I was never enough.
They were always so cold. So distant. They valued strength over kindness. They believed in self-sufficiency—which meant you were on your own if you could not keep up. If you were weak, if you were struggling, if you needed help—they would let you fall.
I fell. Many times.
And they watched.
A pack is a unit. No one gets left behind. But it is not the same in Redmoon. And me—who has always been weak because I am an Omega wolf—it was the worst place for me to be.
But that is the past. I have a family now. Four mates who accept me. A son. I am Luna of the packs despite my perceived weakness.
It is just that walking the streets of Redmoon is bringing back those memories and feelings of inadequacy.
Marcus, as if sensing, squeezes my hand. It gives me strength.
Yes. I am not who I was anymore.
Unlike most pack areas, Redmoon’s section is full of concrete roads and buildings. Our wolves hate that feeling, so I do not understand. It has high buildings too. You would mistake this place for a human settlement.
In front of the outlandish large building belonging to the Redmoon Alpha family is a car we have never seen before.
I was hoping that person did not really exist and she was a collective hallucination. To my disappointment, it seems not.
A wolf stands and gets in our way.
"One cannot just walk in to meet the Alpha or his family," he says.
"I am the Luna, Seraphina," I say.
The four men growl.
"Ah." The wolf says after recognition dawns in his eyes, but he is not apologetic at all. "My apologies."
Another reason I absolutely despise Redmoon. It is the only pack of the four to have not acknowledged me. They barely tolerated the alliance when the vampires were a threat, and after the whole pack retreated and did not associate with the rest of the packs.
"Follow me," he says.
He turns and walks toward the building.
He turns and walks toward the building.
I follow.
Marcus stays close. Theron’s claws are half-extended. Rylan’s jaw is tight. Kai is silent as always.
We walk into the building.
The inside is as outlandish as the outside—clean, modern, human.
I hate it.
Through two turns, we are led into a room where they are seated. I feel like I am back when I was eighteen, scrutinized down to my last piece of fur.
The Redmoon Pack Alpha sits at the head of the table, as imposing as ever. On one side sits Eric. On the other sits the woman from last night. Eric’s sister is perched on the armrest of her chair, and the woman has a hand on her thigh.
All four sets of eyes look at us. Identically, they look at us from head to toe—then dismiss us with their eyes.
I can feel Rylan start to growl, but I shake my head at him.
Eric is the only one who stands.
"I greet the Luna, Mother of Wolves," he says, with a bow that barely moves his back. "Do forgive my father. He is getting on in age. He cannot stand easily."
The woman speaks without looking up.
"Do not look at me," she says. "I am not obligated to respect you. I am not a wolf. And this is my mate—an extension of me. She is not obligated either."
I clench my fists at the mocking look in Elara’s eyes.
I hate her the most.
She has always looked down on me. Always. And having been born three days apart, we have always been compared. I cannot forget the way she looked at me incredulous when I told her Eric was my mate. She looked at me unbelieving, as if she could not believe the goddess had chosen us to be mates.
She even said there was no way Eric would ever accept me as a mate. And believing in the bond, I still went to Eric—and he rejected me on the spot, in front of everyone.
The pain of everything...the heartbreak, the embarrassment, the humiliation it all filled me completely.
It was only when the perfect Elara was pregnant and unmated by something unknown that it became better. She was cast out. She was knocked off her stupid high moral standing.
Now she sits there, looking at me like I am still beneath her.
Like nothing has changed.
"I believe I know why you’re here," the woman from last night says.
She waves her hand. A crow flies in—an envelope clutched in its talons. The crow lands on the table, drops the envelope, then hops onto her shoulder. I do not like the way it is looking at us.
She opens the envelope and removes documents.
"The land is mine," she says. "I own it. Legally. I have the documents to prove it."
Marcus steps forward.
"We have lived on that land for years," he says. "It has been pack territory for generations."
"Not anymore." Daphne’s voice is calm. "I bought it. The humans sold it. It is mine."
"The humans have no right to sell pack lands," I say.
She looks at me as if looking at a child.
"Oh, but they do." She flips through the documents. "It says here—this land is property of the government." She reads some more. "Oh dear. I do not see any of your names here. Or your ancestors’, really."
She looks up.
"I bought this land from the government. So it is mine. It does not matter if you have been here for generations. It is not my fault you lot decided to live isolated lives while the human world developed." She tilts her head.
"Honestly, wolves from other continents—like Europe, legally registered their lands a hundred years ago or so. You lot decided to remain blissfully isolated." She pauses.
"Sad, really... for you."
