Chapter 443: Daphne

Each time I think I have experienced everything, I experience something new. For instance, lying naked and entwined like this in a forest, underneath moonlight.

Not in a sexual way—in a newborn baby lying on a new mother’s chest type of way.

It is so... honestly, kinda freeing.

She decides to run a couple of fingers through my hair. It feels amazing.

"I heard from other wolves that Lyra beat up the Luna’s son again," she says.

"He must have deserved it," I say.

She laughs softly. The sound vibrates through her chest, and I feel it against my cheek.

"She must get that violent nature from you," she says.

"Oh, you are no saint, my beloved." I lift my head to look at her. "I have heard from your brother."

Her eyes widen slightly.

"What has he told you?"

I smile.

"Enough."

She groans. "I am going to kill him."

"See." I raise an eyebrow. "Not exactly a peaceful thought, that is."

"It was an expression," she defends.

"An expression." I tilt my head. "I heard you once had your brother tied up to a tree, and—"

"Stoppp." She covers her face with her hands.

I gently pull her hands away from her face, holding them in mine. Her green eyes are wide, caught between embarrassment and amusement.

She is so cute. Moments like this are everything to me.

I rub my nose against hers before lying back on her chest, listening to her heartbeat softly.

"I had a dream yesterday," she says.

"Hmmnn."

"Do you know that I cannot eat rabbit meat?" she says.

I laugh.

"I cannot hunt them down either. It feels wrong. I did not understand."

"Hmmmnn."

"Now that I had that dream, I understand." She says.

"Oh, tell me more." I am amused.

"You are mean, mate of mine. I was so small, you bullied me."

I snort out a laugh.

"I could not help it. You were so cute," I say.

"I was terrified of this predator that had its sights on me to eat me," she says.

"Well, you are not wrong about eating you." I say.

"You should bully someone your own size," she says.

"Oh, like you?" I shift and place both hands on either side of her face.

"Yes," she says. "I believe I can handle you."

She brings a hand to my chest, to the back of my neck, and pulls me down lower.

"Brave words," I say, "for the wolf that was running away earlier."

"It is only because you like it."

I cannot even argue with that.

I lean down until my lips are brushing hers.

"And what if I like it?" I whisper.

She smiles.

"Then I will keep running," she says. "And you will keep chasing."

"And when I catch you?"

She pulls me the rest of the way down, until our lips meet.

Elara

I shift, and last night’s bruises are already healing. It was not smart to tangle on the forest floor, with twigs and stones, but what could I do?

I get off the bed. It is empty.

I walk into the shower. Which is huge and modern now, thanks to her efforts. The walls are reflective. I see my blurry form on the silver surfaces as steam builds.

I wipe the steam from my reflection.

It changes.

My green eyes become blue.

My hair shifts from red to black.

I blink.

My reflection turns back to normal.

I look at my hand. My claws come out—not the wolf kind. Her kind. Faint scales. Webbed fingers.

I hear movement. I change it back immediately.

I have not told her.

There is nothing to tell.

After all, they are all me.

I finish my shower, dress and walk to the window where I heard Lyra’s laugh coming from.

Lyra is chasing something—a butterfly, maybe, or just the wind. Daphne is beside her, her dark hair loose, her movements easy and unhurried.I stand there, watching as they play in the space connecting to the forest.

I place my hand on the window.

As if sensing my gaze, Daphne looks up at me. She winks.

I blow her a kiss.

She smiles at me before she is dragged away by Lyra into the forest.

*

I almost miss the time before, when I was living on the outskirts. At least I had no work then. But then I did not have a mate then, so I sigh and keep working.

I would not have to do this if my brother got mated and had a mate. But I look at him, and I know why he does not. I do not blame him.

"It is going to be the Moonfall Ceremony soon," he says.

"Oh, I forgot about it."

"What do you mean you forgot? It is the first time you are having one with your mate."

I pause. "Well, probably because I have never attended one before. I did not track it."

I place a couple of strands of hair behind my ear. Eric looks at me, and then scoffs.

"Must be nice," he grumbles.

"Eric," I say.

He looks away.

"You have everything," he says quietly. "A mate. A daughter. A future."

I do not know what to say.

"I did not have it easy," I say. "You know that."

"Easier than me."

I am quiet for a moment.

"Eric—"

"I am fine." He cuts me off. "I am fine, Elara."

He is not fine. He is not fine, I know it, he knows it. I want to speak up, to say something, to reach out—but the words do not come.

Then his Beta walks into the office.

"Hey, Gray," I say with a smile. He smiles back.

I should leave.

"I have to give Lyra breakfast," I say.

I do not wait for a response. I turn and walk out of the office. My footsteps echo on the stone floor. I feel the weight of my brother’s words pressing down on me.
