Chapter 444: Daphne

I do not know what is going on, but I have been walking for three hours with Elara now, heading in some direction deep into the woods. I have noticed there are other—I think mated pairs—walking in the same vague destination.

I mean, I am not tired, but still.

It does not help that we are barefoot too. She said be comfortable, so I am in shorts and a t-shirt. Elara is in some dress. Everyone is just walking in this vague direction.

It feels like a scene from a horror movie.

But honestly, even if I were walking into hell itself, I still would not turn around.

The sun is starting to set. The late sunlight filters through the large, dense trees, casting long golden shadows across the forest floor. The air is cool and crisp. The ground is soft beneath my feet.

I see a couple of wolves run together, their paws barely making a sound on the earth. They are heading in the same direction.

I glance at Elara.

"I think I deserve to know where we are going now," I say, jumping over some twigs.

She giggles.

"You have finally asked. What if I was taking you to the gallows?"

"I would still follow you, regardless," I say.

She rolls her eyes and turns around to face me, walking backwards. The afternoon sunlight sneaks through the trees and falls on her face, catching the edges of her deep red hair, turning it to liquid fire, her eyes turning into a brighter shade of green.

She’s beautiful.

She reaches her hand forward for me to take it.

It is one of those core memories—the kind I know will stick with me for the rest of eternity.

I take her hand.

She smiles.

"It is for the ceremony, o mate of mine."

"What ceremony?" I ask, following in her footsteps.

"Moonfall," she says. "It is a ceremony for mates."

She turns around and slips.

I catch her, my hand on her waist, steadying her.

"It is not a blood sacrifice, is it?" I ask.

"Could be." She grins.

I pull her closer, not sure if she is joking, but going anyway.

Roughly an hour later, the sun has set, and it is a dark, cloudy night. A bunch of wolves are walking—some in human form, some in wolf form. The forest is eerily silent, save for the sound of running water in the distance.

Eventually, the journey stops. I look around curiously.

"Come," Elara whispers.

I follow her. I find the source of the water I have been hearing—a stream tumbling a metre onto some rocks, like a mini waterfall.

The air is colder here. It makes a beautiful scene, but I do not know why we had to walk for hours to get here.

Elara laughs silently, as if reading my mind.

"Wait," she says.

She drags me to sit down, leaning against a really large tree trunk. I do as she asks and wait.

She leans her head against my shoulder.

"I have always wanted to come here with you," she says.

"As long as you are happy," I say.

"I am serious," she says. "It is the Moonfall Ceremony. For mates. It is only open to mates."

"That explains the pairs I was seeing," I say.

"Yes." She shuffles closer, and I put an arm over her shoulder.

"Why only mated pairs?" I ask. "What is stopping a random wolf from showing up regardless?"

"Well..." She pauses. "I heard that those who do, do not find their way back to the mortal world."

"Oh, okay—" I stop. "Wait. What do you mean mortal world? Are we not in the mortal world?" I narrow my eyes.

She silences me with a look.

"It is happening," she says.

I look around.

The mist is rising, surrounding the area in a light fog, like a rain shower, I can feel my hair becoming damp.

System, where are we?

[From my observation, Host, this indeed is not the physical realm, but the spiritual realm belonging to the deity of the wolves.]

Oh. She exists? This Moon Goddess?

[Yes. And no. Only higher-tier worlds can have solidified deities. For a mid-tier world like this one, it is less of a deity and more of a concept—a manifestation of the world seed.]

I do not understand.

I cannot see the System, but I swear I see it roll its eyes from wherever it is.

[The WORLD SEED, Host. The force that governs the karmatic laws of a world.]

Yeah, I remember that. But why is it suddenly a god now?

[Worlds have focal points—the main characters—to stabilize them. And the force that protects the stability of the world.]

Kind of like the plot?

[...]

[Yes.]

[Host, have you been completing missions without understanding the basics?]

...

[Host.]

I pretend I cannot hear the System.

Then it happens.

The clouds part.

A super-bright moon shines down, and the fog that is surrounding becomes so dense it is almost tangible. I reach out my hand and try to hold it—and I do, in a way. It slides off my fingers like dense smoke.

"That is why it is called Moonfall," Elara says softly. "It is like moonlight itself has fallen."

She takes a handful of the strange gas, letting it slide through her fingers. It is a pretty silver color, falling through her fingers like liquid light.

She stands and reaches out her hand. She helps me up.

"I love you," she says suddenly.

"And I love you," I say automatically.

The smoke rises to our knees, then mid-thigh, then waist—and it does something ethereal.

It begins to glow around us.

She gasps. A happy, surprised sound.

"We are mates."

"Yes." I laugh. "Yes, we are. Were you not aware of that fact?"

She shoves me slightly.

"Of course I was," she says. "It is just that this is the physical manifestation of our bond."

I look down. I notice the glowing smoke is surrounding us,wrapping around our bodies, pulsing with a soft, silver light.
