Chapter 453: Cruel wordsChapter 453: Marcus
I take Ethan aside to shield him from the argument happening.
"Go to your grandfather for the night, hmm?" I tell him and ruffle his hair.
"Okay." Ethan says. He shifts into a gray pup and runs into the forest.I can’t help but smile even his fur is just like mine.Once he is gone, I exhale and walk into the house.
"You are overreacting."
"I am overreacting?! Overreacting!!!" My mate screams.
"Yes!"
"Maybe do not go acting friendly with other wolves when you are mated!"
"It is not a big deal. Mated wolves cannot even be physically involved with other wolves!"
"It is about respect! You acting like this is humiliating to me. What wolf wants to hear tales of how friendly their mate is!"
She screams, throwing a chair in his direction. He claws at it, and it breaks into pieces.
"It has never been a problem before. I do not know why it is such a problem now."
"Is it so hard for you to keep a respectable distance from them out of respect for me?"
"You talk about respect?" Rylan’s voice rises. "I do not bring it up when I hear you fucking other men."
I immediately move in to interfere before it gets physical.I grab Rylan by the arm and drag him out of the house, into the woods.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" I demand.
"She is being unreasonable!"
"She is your mate."
"She is everyone’s mate," he snaps.
I grab him by the collar.
"You will not disrespect her like that."
He shoves me.
"Who the fuck made you in charge?" He growls. "Acting like you are the leader. I am no less of an Alpha than you are."
I growl back.
"I am only saying this out of respect for my mate. Something you clearly do not have."
"Run," I say. "Run, cool off, and then come back and apologize."
"Why the fuck would I listen to you?"
I grab him by the collar and slam him into the nearest tree. The impact is so hard that a branch drops, and leaves fall on us.
"Clearly, with how you are acting," I say, my voice low and dangerous, "someone has to be the mature one."
He stares at me. His eyes are wild. His chest is heaving. His claws are half-extended.
"I do not care that the others follow you like little bitches," he says. He pushes me. "But I will not. I am not your bitch! And I certainly will not give into the whims of one that will not even give me a pup."
I punch him in the face.
He stumbles back, stunned.
Then he lunges.
We collide. Fists swing. Claws slash. The forest floor churns beneath us as we roll, trading blows.
He lands a hit on my jaw. I feel my teeth rattle. I drive my knee into his stomach. He gasps, but does not fall.
We break apart. We circle each other.
He is bleeding from his nose. I can taste blood in my mouth.
"Say that again," I growl.
He wipes his nose with the back of his hand.
"She will not give me a pup," he says. "She will not give any of us a pup. Just you. Just your son. And you act like you are better than us."
I am on him again. I land continuous hits to his face, doing my best to remember not to kill him—for insulting my mate and the mother of my pup.
I stop and look at him. His bruised face is visibly healing.
"You know what, you bastard?" I say, leaning down. "You know how it is taking a toll on her that she cannot have other children, and you dare say such bullshit? You are not worthy of being her mate, nor of having a pup from her. The goddess must agree with me, since there is none."
He shoves me off and stands up straight.
I laugh mockingly.
"Hurts to hear, does it not?" I say.
"Stop," he growls.
"Oh, Alpha Rylan of Stoneclaw Pack." I circle him slowly, my voice dripping with contempt.
"Never enough. Second-born Alpha when a pack should only have one. The extra. The other Alpha. The spare."
He clenches his fists.
"Poor little Alpha Rylan gets a mate, but he is still not number one." I stop in front of him.
"There are four packs. I belong to one. Kai belongs to one. Our mate belongs to one. And Theron belongs to one. So what are you doing here?"
"Shut up."
"Never enough," I continue. "Never a place to belong. You think I do not see it in your eyes? When we are in bed, and you stand there watching us four? Envious. That is the real reason you want a pup, is it not? To finally be the first option in someone’s life. Because you were never first to your parents. To your pack. To your family. And even to your own mate, the one person in this world that should be belong to you."
His face twists with rage.
"I said shut up."
"Your brother was the favorite," I say. "Always. Your father looked at him with pride. Your mother coddled him. And you? You were just there. The spare. The extra. The one who had to fight for scraps of attention."
He lunges. I sidestep. He crashes into a tree.
"You cannot even look in the mirror," I continue, my voice cold and steady, "because not even your face is solely your own. You are a copy. A shadow. Theron’s reflection. Born second, always second. Your parents wanted Theron. They got Theron. And then you came—unexpected, unwanted, an afterthought."
He pushes himself up, his claws digging into the bark.
"I said stop."
"You will never be first," I say. "Not to your parents. Not to your pack. Not to your mate. And certainly not to that pup you are so desperate for."
He screams again.
He charges at me.
He charges at me.
I meet him head-on. Because he is angry, his moves are clumsy. He swings wildly. I dodge. I grab his arm. I twist. I pin him to the ground.
He struggles. I hold him down.
"Instead of being like this," I say, my voice cold and steady, "you should be grateful to even be a part of this. You are nothing. So I do not understand what gives you the courage to act like this."
He glares at me.
"If the bond is broken, my mate will have three other bonds." I lean closer. "But that will not be the same for you, will it? You will be all alone. It is a privilege, not an entitlement."
I get off him.
I stand.
I look down at him.
"Now, like I said: run. Cool down. And come back and apologize."
