Ji’an gasped and raised her hands.
But he was faster.
He did not grab or hurt her.
Instead, he placed one hand against the bronze mirror beside her head, trapping her between him and the vanity.
His other hand slowly reached toward her silver hair, as he touched the ends of it.
Ji’an’s entire body went stiff.
’This is...’
He was very close.
Far too close.
She could feel the cold coming from his body. She could smell winter pine and the faint scent of ozone around him.
Her heart began pounding. ’He’s going to notice.’
Ji’an’s mind raced.
My face looks different than usual. Now that the locket is gone, he’ll sense my Yin energy. He’ll realize I’m a woman. He’ll realize I’ve been deceiving him. He’ll kill me!’
But Wangchen did not look suspicious. Not even slightly.
He simply stared at her silver hair. His expression was almost reverent. "Your hair color now matches me."
His voice was barely a whisper.
Ji’an blinked.
But Wangchen leaned even closer.
"The Heavens struck you." His fingers moved gently through the silver strands. "And they marked you with my colors."
His ruby eyes moved from her hair to her face.
"They tried to bleach away your darkness." A faint smile appeared on his lips. "But they only made you more perfect."
Ji’an’s throat went dry.
"You look like a deity, Brother Ji’an." He looked completely fascinated. "You look like my equal."
Ji’an stood there frozen.
’He doesn’t know.’
The realization hit her like lightning.
Wangchen’s obsession was so strong that he didn’t even question the changes in her appearance. He simply believed her new face and silver hair were the result of her cultivation breakthrough.
He still thought she was a man. He still thought she was the arrogant young master of Drunken Peak.
And yet...
The way he was looking at her was so intense that Ji’an’s knees began to shake.
"Wangchen..." She slowly placed both hands against his chest. "Step back."
Her voice was barely audible.
"You are too close."
"I am exactly where I should be."
Wangchen did not move.
Ji’an’s heart nearly stopped.
He lowered his head and rested his face against the side of her neck.
Ji’an gasped, her entire body became stiff.
His cold nose brushed against her collarbone.
A sharp shiver ran through her.
"Do you know how painful it was?" His voice was soft against her skin. "Watching those lesser men look at you?"
Ji’an couldn’t breathe properly.
"Hearing them offer you vows?" His breath was cold enough to make the sweat on her skin disappear.
"They don’t know you."
His voice became quieter. "They only see the silver hair."
He paused. "But I see the Chef."
His hand tightened slightly against the mirror. "I see the monster who breaks arrays and laughs while standing in the mud."
Ji’an’s face burned.
Wangchen slowly lifted his head.
"Let them propose to the fairy maiden."
His voice was calm again. "I don’t care what form you take, Brother Ji’an."
His eyes locked onto hers.
"You could become a dragon."
A pause.
"You could become a demon."
Another pause.
"You could lose your face entirely."
His expression did not change.
"It would change nothing."
Ji’an stared at him.
Wangchen leaned closer.
"You are mine." His voice was soft, but there was no doubt in it. "You are my Vanguard. You are my Chef."
His ruby eyes darkened. "And I would burn this entire continent to ash before I let anyone else taste your fire."
Ji’an’s brain completely stopped working.
Her survival instincts screamed at her to use an explosive talisman and jump through the window.
But her body was frozen.
She was trapped against a vanity by an incredibly powerful immortal who was making terrifying promises of eternal devotion.
"You..." Ji’an struggled to speak. "You are insane."
She swallowed. "Completely unhinged."
Wangchen slowly pulled back. He looked into her eyes. Then he smiled.
It was a beautiful smile.
And somehow, that made it even more frightening.
"I am whatever you have made me, Chef."
Ji’an’s heart skipped.
Wangchen did not kiss her. He knew where her boundaries were.
Instead, he lifted a lock of her silver hair, pressed his cold lips gently against the strands.
It was an old-fashioned gesture that almost felt like a vow.
Then he let the hair fall back onto her shoulder.
"Rest well, my Ji’an."
His murderous expression had disappeared.
Only a quiet, patient hunger remained in his eyes.
"The boys will not disturb you tonight." He took one step backward. "I shall make certain they remain... occupied."
Wangchen gave her a perfect, elegant bow.
Then he turned.
The shadows swallowed him.
The ice-displacement array activated.
And the Sovereign of the Eternal Cloud Peak disappeared.
The frost slowly began to melt.
Ji’an remained against the vanity.
One second.
Ten seconds.
Thirty.
Sixty.
Then her legs finally gave out.
She slid down the front of the vanity and landed on the soft carpet and pulled her knees toward her chest.
Her silver hair spilled around her as she buried her burning face in her knees. Her heart was beating so hard it felt like it might break her ribs.
"I am going to die." Her voice was muffled. "I am going to be murdered by a yandere immortal who thinks I’m a guy."
She squeezed her eyes shut. "Or I’m going to die from stress."
She reached up and grabbed the locket from the vanity. Her hand was still shaking, but she held the cold metal tightly.
The Vanguard Tour had only just begun.
The boys were getting stronger. The Overtime Boss was waiting in the desert. And the Ice Demon had just upgraded from protective bodyguard to:
’I will freeze the entire continent so nobody else can look at you.’
Ji’an rocked back and forth on the floor.
But as she sat there in the darkness, her silver hair spread across the carpet, she could still remember the feeling of Wangchen’s lips against her hair.
