"Sending those kids back without meeting them feels wrong. Maybe I should check on them once before I head back inside."
Kael muttered as he looked at the barrier with bitter eyes.
His instincts warned him not to go anywhere near the barrier if he wanted to keep his life. But his desire to meet those kids one last time made his body move. He felt indecisive, not knowing what he should do.
But the decision was made for him by Emma as she grabbed his collar and pulled him back.
"I have a feeling you are about to make a foolish decision, so I will stop you before you can. Let’s head back to your room for now. I will make you rest by force if I have to."
Emma warned Kael, and he decided to give up on whatever he was planning and follow her lead. Hopefully, Leon would make sure to deliver his message, and he would no longer have to worry about the others barging into the barrier.
’Still...I should write to them and explain the situation. It might help ease their worries...’
Kael decided he would write to them at the first chance he got. Unfortunately, that chance did not come until the following week.
Due to the sudden breach of the barrier, emergency repairs had to be carried out, and Kael was practically confined to the medical wing to ensure he had not suffered any complications from his little ’outing.’
The doctor had declared him fine a long time ago, but his family did not seem to agree and forced him to stay in bed.
Thankfully, he was able to sneak out and send a letter before the next party began. Then came the busy social season, and with it, the endless flattery of the nobles.
Kael had made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with the succession of his house or fighting with his brothers over the position of family head.
But his decision did not seem to matter to the vessels, as they continued to close in around him and try to use him for their own benefit.
The first banquet after the break was a clear example of this.
Kael stood in a corner, sipping his mocktail while looking around the room when he was suddenly approached by a man dressed in fine jewelry. The presence of an artifact on him told Kael that he was trying to conceal his identity from the public.
However, the artifact was so weak that anyone with even a little control could see through his disguise, which begged the question—was the disguise actually useful, or was it simply a ploy to get Kael’s attention?
Whatever the case, Kael did not want to fall for it. So he took a step back and decided to subtly make his escape. But another presence blocked his path.
This time, it was a young but beautiful lady. Her curly hair and fair complexion made her a striking beauty, but her sharp eyes revealed that she was much more than just a pretty face.
"Young Master Kael, would you give me the honor of having your first dance of the night?"
The lady asked in a voice loud enough for everyone to look at them. Rejecting her now would not only damage her reputation but his own as well.
No noble would ever reject a beauty asking for a dance...but Kael had broken away from aristocratic society long ago. It was these nobles’ mistake if they thought they could use him however they pleased.
"Sir, are you not going to take my hand? I am offering it to you, and it’s getting embarrassing."
This time, the young woman spoke quietly enough that no one else could hear her. Her cheeks were also tinted red, showing that she was becoming more and more uncomfortable with her pose.
And yet, Kael had no intention of helping her.
When he still did not move after a few more seconds, the man standing behind Kael let out a laugh before reaching out to grab Kael’s hand and placing it into the hands of the lady in front of him.
"Hmm, it looks like our young master is shy because it has been a long time since he last danced. My dear daughter, Valary, it is up to you to show our young master a good time."
The noble laughed, but there was expectation in his voice. He was telling his daughter to charm Kael, and she nodded.
Soft hands wrapped themselves around Kael’s wrist before Valary pulled him toward the dance floor.
Her soft hand rested on his shoulder, and Kael allowed Valary to lead the dance.
"Don’t pay attention to anything else but me tonight, my lord. I assure you that I will be far better company for you than anyone else here. You can leave all your worries behind and put your trust in me."
Valary promised as her hand moved from his shoulder toward his neck. Her grip was almost possessive, and the look in her eyes told everyone else to stay back if they knew what was good for them.
Dancing with Valary felt like being coiled around by a snake eager to sink its fangs into his neck.
"My lord, what are you worrying about so much? If you are with me, then you should pay attention to me. Please forget all your worries and allow me to show you a good time."
Valary’s soft voice was like poison in Kael’s ear. She was controlling his movements with her charm without breaking a sweat.
But all of this was happening because Kael was allowing her to lead and think she was in charge, when nothing could have been further from the truth.
In reality, he simply saw no point in stopping her. It would only turn into a headache he did not want to deal with.
So if he could avoid all of that by simply enduring the dance for an hour, then he was willing to do so.
Unfortunately, his dance partner had other plans.
