Due to what had happened at breakfast, lunch was skipped. But things returned to normal around dinnertime. However, the tension remained in the air.
Selene and Kana took their seats across from Kael, and he immediately noticed their eyes snapping toward him.
Kana opened her mouth to question him when she suddenly changed her mind and decided that leaving him alone would be a better option. However, Selene kept looking at him with her unnerving gaze.
Kael was not bothered by Kana’s fidgeting, but Selene’s glare distracted him enough that he was unable to focus. So he looked up as well, and his eyes met Selene’s.
Hostility flashed across her eyes, and Kael prepared himself for her attack. But that attack never came.
Instead, the others started arriving and taking their seats.
Emma immediately sat on his left while Nathan sat on his right. They were flanking him in a way that made it clear they were ready to jump in and protect him if Selene decided he was a threat.
Kael did not mind being protected like this, but it was also an odd sensation for him since he was used to being the one doing the protecting, not the other way around.
Now that he had support by his side, Kael expected Selene to soften her gaze or turn away from him. But somehow, her glare looked even fiercer than before. And this time, it even engulfed the two figures by his side.
Emma ignored Selene, but Nathan was a hot-tempered young man and decided he was not going to tolerate this treatment.
"Is there a problem? Why do you keep glaring at us?"
Nathan’s question was almost hostile, but Selene seemed to have no desire to answer him. That was why Kana decided to make excuses for her.
"Please forgive Selene. She’s...just having a hard time being away from home for so long. I assure you that she meant no offense by her actions. Right, Selene?"
Kana asked, turning toward her younger sister and sneaking her a few glances. Her eyes were begging Selene to agree with her, but she was ignored by her younger sister, causing the elder high elf to panic.
Luckily for her, Selene was on the same page as her and slowly nodded after a few more seconds.
"I...apologize if I made you feel uncomfortable with my staring. I assure you that I meant nothing by it. I was just trying to figure out what about you bothered me. But on closer inspection, I think I was simply too nervous before, so I acted that way. Please forgive me."
Selene lowered her head in apology, and the atmosphere turned awkward in an instant.
No one knew what they should say to her now that she had apologized. The right thing to do would be to forgive her, but...
Wasn’t something wrong here?
Kael’s senses were telling him that Kana was putting on an elaborate act in front of him and that he should not trust her.
But Selene had no need to put on an act, so he felt even more confused than before.
Still, since she was showing remorse, he decided to give her a second chance. Everyone deserved that much.
"I will accept your apology. I would also love to know what bothered you about me. So please, do tell me once you figure it out."
Kael’s words were lighthearted and without any hidden intentions. He also gave Selene a smile, which made her relax.
But his family had other opinions about his decision. Nathan looked especially annoyed by it, and he even let out an irritated sound.
"Tsk, why are you accepting her apology so easily? At least make her sweat a little."
Nathan grumbled under his breath, but Kael ignored him. He had no desire to stoke the fire that was already dying out. If Selene wanted to become friendly with him, then he would welcome that decision with open arms.
And who knew? Maybe their relationship would turn out better this time around.
...
It did not take long for Adrian to appear and for dinner to begin. No one said much after that, but the glances Kael received from Selene became even more intense, causing him to look back at her.
Their gazes clashed, and for a moment even Kael tensed, wondering if he was about to be attacked.
Luckily, nothing happened, and he was able to return to the medical wing on his own. Emma accompanied him and dropped him off in front of the medical wing’s door with a frown.
"Kael, isn’t it about time you got your own wing in this castle? It’s been almost two years, and you are still living in the medical wing. Adrian should have given you one a long time ago. I will talk to him about it."
Emma made this decision for his sake, and Kael immediately felt like he had to stop her from "helping him out."
After all, having a wing in the castle would mean he would be responsible for that section of it. And Kael did not want to shoulder any responsibility since he was about to head back home soon.
"It’s fine. I don’t mind living in the medical wing. Besides, I have almost recovered, so it will be time for me to head back home soon. Having a wing would only become a problem then."
Kael tried to make light of the situation, but Emma paused after hearing his words.
"You...are going to head back home? When are you going to do that? And why didn’t you tell us something like this until now?"
Emma asked in a desperate tone, her voice growing quieter and quieter. A dangerous edge crept into her words, making Kael feel like he was in danger. If he did not handle this carefully, then he might be in trouble.
Despite knowing this, Kael swallowed his nervousness and replied with a small laugh.
"I will be heading back home soon. I have been away for 1 year and 8 months already. Any longer, and it might start to become a problem."
