Kael knew that there would be no way to hide what had happened to the elves. It was bound to come out sooner or later, which made him sigh in agitation.

But for now, things were still calm, and Adrian quickly brought him and the others back home. He had also assumed responsibility for the elf village and merged it into his territory.

The elves had tried to protest, but they had soon been silenced by his presence, making them quiet down.

Kael did not care who controlled the village, as long as it was not him. He refused to spend his precious time worrying about elves on top of everything else.

Elena and Iris also flanked his sides to prevent him from getting away.

In the end, Kael had no choice but to sit down and answer their questions. Even looking at Leon for help was useless because Leon was pretending he could not see Kael’s desperate gaze.

"So, is there anything you would like to say to us?"

Seraphina asked, tapping her foot against the ground in an agitated manner. Her eyes told Kael that he needed to speak up, and quickly.

Kael took a deep breath before replying.

"Uhmm, I am sorry that I made a mistake?"

He phrased it like a question, which only served to make Seraphina more agitated.

"And what mistake did you make?"

She asked, making Kael sweat bullets. He was sure his shirt was damp by now as he tried to recall what he needed to apologize for.

His mind came up blank, but his mouth decided to speak on its own.

"Umm, I am sorry for not telling you what was going on? And for getting kidnapped? And what else is there...let me think..."

Kael’s mind drew a blank, and he instantly felt Elena’s arms wrap around his shoulders from behind.

Her mouth rested near his ear, which made Kael gulp nervously.

"Mother, you are too much! First, you abandon us all to come and live with your family, and now you say you don’t even remember what you need to apologize for? You are breaking my heart."

Elena’s words held an edge that made Kael’s mouth go dry.

"Elena, this is not my fault. The circumstances—"

"But you did not even send us a letter. We kept waiting and waiting. Could you not have communicated with us—"

"I did send a letter to Leon every once in a while to let everyone know that I was fine. I did not think about sending separate ones because I was recovering."

Kael spoke quickly, and everyone turned their attention toward Leon.

But unlike Kael, Leon did not look bothered by their stares and simply scoffed at them.

"Did you think I would share my letters with you all? Those are my private property."

Leon’s words made everyone fume. But since they could not take their frustration out on Leon, their anger turned toward Kael.

He had a feeling he would not be able to leave the room until he had answered all of their questions to their satisfaction.

Thankfully, Kael was let out once it was time to head back. He decided to sit with his brother, who was busy reading through some papers. The look on Adrian’s face was troubled, and Kael decided it would be best not to ask what had happened.

But trouble usually found Kael even when he tried to avoid it, and this time was no exception.

Adrian looked at the paper in his hand with a frown before turning toward Kael. Kael could tell that something was bothering him, and Adrian quickly asked his question.

"Kael, how much do you know about the temple and politics? Do you think they knew about the elves’ corruption?"

Now that was a difficult question to answer.

Objectively, Kael could believe that the temple knew everything but chose to hide it for its own benefit. But he could not say that with certainty.

"Is there a reason you are asking me this?"

Kael asked, trying to probe what was going on. It was not like his brother to ask him such a question.

Adrian sighed and handed the paper he was reading over to Kael. It was a letter with a very familiar seal stamped in the bottom-right corner.

"This is..."

"From the emperor. He has asked us to attend a noble meeting regarding what happened. The news of the elf territory being purified and seized must have reached those greedy nobles’ ears, and now they are all trying to get a piece of the pie."

Adrian sounded disgusted when he said those words, and Kael agreed.

He had no doubt that many of the nobles had also been working with the elves to take advantage of the rebellion and gain more power. There was elf blood mixed throughout many noble bloodlines, which meant they had been corrupted as well.

But now that the source of that corruption was gone, they were finally showing their true colors.

"Still...I don’t think it is that big of a deal. Those nobles can try to corner us all they want, but we have the upper hand here, right?"

Kael asked his elder brother, and Adrian nodded.

"We do have the upper hand this time. Moreover, Kana has agreed to cooperate, so we have another advantage. She says she wants to confess what she and the others did and ask for a royal pardon."

That was surprising. Kael had not expected her to make such a decision.

But one look at Adrian made him believe that his brother had something to do with it. And if that was the case...it was better not to ask what he had done.
