"That wasn't so bad," Denise said from beside me.

I didn't answer her for a few seconds, continuing to indulge in the sights outside as the car drove.

It was already evening, so all the billboards were lit, there were several cars on the road, and a heavy bustle on the streets.

"Yeah, it wasn't."

"The man is a lot more chill than I thought."

"Careful not to let your guard down, though," Denise warned.

"Don't worry, I properly read his stance."

Satisfied with my awareness, Denise nodded, turning back to her pad, while I looked ahead.

"Nadia!!"

"Yes, Sir?"

"Jamie Dimon. What do you know about him?"

"Who's that?"

"Jamie Dimon."

"I... don't know who you're talking about, Sir."

"When I was out waiting for Sky at the back of the station, you came looking for me and found me talking with a man smoking a cigar. Remember now?"

Having described the scene so vividly, I expected an immediate "Yes" from Nadia, but the woman remained silent.

Seconds passed, a glance at the rear-view mirror revealing Nadia deep in thought, her forehead scrunched.

"I do remember meeting you with someone smoking, but aside from that, I don't think I saw their face."

"You saw his face. At a single glance, you recognized him."

My statement pushed Nadia to the edge as she went deep into her mind to understand what I was saying, but in the end, she shook her head.

"I can't remember his face, sir. It's all a blur in my head."

Vividly remembering how things had played out, it became very clear to me what I was now dealing with.

From my being unable to find him with Echo to Nadia now being unable to remember his face, I began thinking about where the man stood, what power he could be linked to, and whether he was an enemy.

Within a second, I became absorbed in my mind, and while I ran complex calculations, the two women with me began a conversation.

"Master," Nadia's voice started, a bit doubtful. "Did you know the governor would be coming today?"

"Yes."

The answer made Nadia's expression go bitter, but she continued. "How did you know? I had debated the possibility of him attending, but all of my sources assured me he would be absent."

Nadia could have waited till both she and Denise were off the road, probably in a room where she could properly speak her mind.

Either the turn of events today had been a real bother to her, and she had just expertly hid it, or she had detected some layer of fault in her calculations.

"Don't beat yourself up over it; you just graduated college. Do you think it's reasonable that within a few months, you build a network that can outdo the accumulated influence of the governor of this state?"

"You have a powerful network," Nadia muttered.

"How long have I been in the game?"

The front woman's lips moved, but no sound left her mouth.

Abandoning the topic, Nadia glanced at me through the rear-view mirror a few times, and then her voice sounded again.

"Was it an agreement between the two of you not to indulge with the governor?" Nadia was a bit hesitant.

"No," Denise didn't waste time replying, but immediately after, her eyes shifted to me.

"Remember, Sky is now a member of the Houdini group.

He's a leader there, and initially, before he made the announcement, he wanted to build his project in Los Angeles, but the governor refused."

"Is that why we're alienating ourselves from him?"

Clearly, while Nadia saw the friction such past contact could cause, she did not think it was enough for us to put ourselves against the governor.

"Regan Bastos and his fellow billionaires have their project being set up on Islo Street. Who do you think approved their work?"

Nadia went silent, processing my words, and I added a few words after a while.

"Regan is a proven enemy, and given his reach, he most definitely has the governor in his pocket.

Being in a standoff with the governor might seem to be making things hard for our movement here, but it's easier to handle him from a distance than from up close."

"Are you really banking on Annie to become governor someday?"

"She will," I stated immediately, then silently turned to both women. "Don't try to understand. Whatever means you have to be sure of what I just said, take it."

"That's a lot of hope, and a lot of trust." Nadia went silent, focusing back on the road.

It was Denise who spoke.

Having been in Michigan the past few weeks, Denise was still only getting used to the thought of Annie on our side, and especially my thoughts on her.

"I did a background check on her. She's not the angel she paints herself to be."

"As I said, don't try to understand."

"Okay."

A few minutes later, the car drove up to the front of our hotel, all three of us stepping out.

Nadia handed the keys to the valet, and we immediately headed in.

The hotel lobby was brightly lit, busy with several bodies moving around.

"Not a bad crowd," I commented, my eyes scanning the area.

"Don't you have Martha waiting up there for you?"

I wasn't planning to answer Denise, but then a thought gripped me.

"You've met Martha?"

"Physically? No. I'm hoping to talk to her tonight."

Denise meeting Martha was not a pleasant sight in my head, and it immediately had my brain working.

"Still thinking about the mysterious man?"

"Oh, him." I scratched my chin, my mind drawn back to Jamie.

"You didn't ask me if I knew him."

With Nadia leaving us to attend to some issue, Denise and I were just stepping into the elevator, and I immediately focused on her when the doors closed.

"Do I need to ask you before you tell me?"

"You looked like you didn't think I would know, so I decided to keep that information to myself."

"Alright, who is Jamie Dimon?" I was skeptical of the woman's reply, but more curious.

"Current Chairman and CEO of Bank One."

Bank One.

The name of the bank struck a chord, sounding very familiar. I put my brain to work, and in no time, memories began unfolding.

Didn't Bank One merge with J.P. Morgan, with its CEO becoming the CEO of the merged company?
