The knocking started at dawn.

Soft at first.

Then firmer.

Then unmistakably "we are the maids it's time to get ready for the ceremony."

Charlie groaned. "No... go away..."

The door opened anyway.

Three maids swept in like a coordinated strike team, crisp uniforms, perfect posture, expressions that said you have a schedule and you will obey it.

"Lady Charlie," one said gently, "it is time."

Charlie sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Okay, okay... I'm awake..."

The second maid turned toward my bed.

"Lady Zora?"

I didn't move.

Charlie snorted. "Good luck."

The maid leaned down. "Your Majesty?"

I made a noise that was not English.

The maids exchanged a look.

Then, like they'd trained for this, two of them grabbed my blanket, one lifted my pillow, and suddenly I was upright.

Standing.

Eyes half‑closed.

Barely conscious.

A full Zora zombie.

Charlie burst out laughing. "Oh my god. I fight her every morning and you just...you just picked her up."

One maid smiled politely. "We have experience."

I blinked slowly. "Whuh...?"

The maids guided me forward like I was a toddler learning to walk. I didn't resist, or question them. I didn't even fully wake up.

Charlie followed, amused out of her mind. "She's letting you do anything. This reminds me of the last time, except she dressed herself." She thought about the nightgown incident.

The maids sat me on a cushioned stool in front of a mirror.

I stared at my reflection, eyes half‑closed, hair a disaster, expression blank.

One maid whispered, "Begin."

And they did.

They brushed my hair.

Braided it.

Pinned it.

Wrapped it in silver threads that shimmered like frost.

They dusted my cheeks with a soft glow of blush.

They slipped delicate rings onto my fingers.

Charlie leaned against the wall, arms crossed, grinning. "She's not even awake. She's letting you dress her like a doll."

One maid laughed softly. "She is very cooperative."

"Yea she's like that when she's tired."Charlie said.

Then came the outfit.

The maids lifted it carefully, a gown made of layered ice‑blue silk, embroidered with silver patterns that looked like frost spreading across glass. The sleeves draped elegantly, the bodice fitted but comfortable, the skirt flowing like water.

A queen's gown.

A gown meant for someone powerful.

Someone divine.

Someone awake.

I was not awake.

They lifted my arms, slid the gown over my head.

They tightened the waist, and adjusted the sleeves.

I let them...

Charlie was wheezing. "She's not even conscious enough to complain. This is the best morning of my life."

One maid stepped back. "Your Majesty, please stand."

I stood.

Barely.

The gown shimmered in the morning light, elegant, regal, and impossibly beautiful.

Charlie's laughter softened into awe. "Zora... you look like an actual queen."

I blinked slowly.

Charlie called. "Wake up, sleepyhead. You're about to be crowned."

I groaned. "No..."

Charlie smiled. "Yes."

My eyes snapped open.

And I realized three maids were already halfway through dressing me.

One was fastening something along my ribs.

Another was smoothing the ice‑blue silk over my hips.

A third was behind me, adjusting my already braided hair so intricate it looked like a spell.

I blinked hard. "Wait...wait...what's happening...uuuuugggggh!!! I can't breath... uugh why am I being squuuueezed!!!

Charlie, sitting cross‑legged on the bed, burst out laughing. "Oh good. She's finally coherent. That's called a corset honey. Beauty before oxygen as they say."

They had me pressed against the vanity as the continued to strange my ribs and chest.

"Owowowowww. Uuuugh..." when they were finished I felt like my torso was stiff and compressed beyond anything normal.

The maid at my shoulder smiled politely. "Your Majesty, we're done now, you were very cooperative."

"I... was cooperative? I didn't even know I was alive!" I said as I tried and mostly failed to inhale.

Charlie grinned. "You let them lift your arms like a doll."

"I DID NOT."I gasped ugh it's so hard to breath.

"That's normal." Charlie said.

"why would It be nor—?!"

The maid behind me tugged gently. "Please hold still, Your Majesty."

I froze.

Automatically.

Like a trained pet.

"Oh my god," I whispered. "I'm still doing it."

Charlie wheezed. "You're so polite when you're half‑asleep."

"I'm not polite, I'm oxygen deprived.

"You're both."

I looked down at myself, at the gown I didn't remember agreeing to, at the silver embroidery curling across the bodice like frost, at the layered silk that shimmered like frozen waterfalls.

"Oh no," I breathed. "Oh no no no, this is too fancy."

Charlie walked over, eyes sparkling. "It's a coronation gown."

"I look like I'm about to declare war," I said.

"You look like a queen."

"I'm not a queen!"

"You're about to be."

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

"Oh shit," I whispered.

Charlie nodded as she pinched my side.

"Ow hey what was that for Charlie!?"

"Just because you're a Queen now doesn't mean you can curse like a sailor. And I'm still your big sister." She said. "I'll still pop you everytime."

"OKAY...okay sorry jeez." I whined.

"This is real huh, like really real? This is actually happening? They're going to put a crown on me. A real crown. On my real head. In front of real people." I was starting to panic.

The maid at my waist tightened a clasp. "Please breathe normally, Your Majesty."

"I CAN'T BREATHE NORMALLY, I'M ABOUT TO BE UNWILLINGLY MADE A QUEEN!?"

Charlie patted my shoulder. "You're fine."

"I was asleep while they did all of this."

"And it was adorable."

"I let them dress me like a mannequin?"

"You did."

"I didn't even fight?"

"You didn't."

I groaned loudly, burying my face in my hands. "I'm... I'm actually flustered. Over being dressed. What is wrong with me."

Charlie smirked. "You're human...well tactically we're elves now, but hey who's keeping tabs."

"We're not human anymore Charlie...."

"I know."

The maids stepped back in perfect sync.

"Your Majesty," one said, bowing, "your coronation attire is complete."

I turned toward the mirror.

Then blinked.

Then blinked again.

"Charlie," I whispered urgently, leaning toward her. "Charlie. Charlie. Something's happening."

Charlie lifted her head, already chewing on a roll she had gotten from who knows where. "What? Are you dying? Is it the merge? Is it... whaait... did you get your monthly cycle !!!!?"

"No," I hissed face frosting hard . "It's— it's— my breasts."

Charlie stared. "Your chest?"

"Yes!" I whispered, mortified. "It looks...bigger!"

Charlie blinked once.

Then twice.

Then snorted. "Zora, that's the corset."

I grabbed her arm. "But why is it doing that?!"

Charlie tried very hard not to laugh. "Because that's what corsets do. They, uh... lift things."

I stared down at myself again, horrified. "It lifts them that much?!"

Charlie shrugged helplessly. "You got the fancy royal one. It's... enthusiastic."

I slapped a hand over my face. "Charlie, I don't know how to manage— this it feels weird!!"

Charlie patted my shoulder sympathetically. "Welcome to elf womanhood. It's confusing. And sometimes pointy."

I groaned. "I hate it, I need a hoodie dammit.

'Whap!!...'. "Ouch Charlie..."

"How many time do I need to say it Zora..."

"Oh right sorry.."

"Plus...You look great," Charlie said. "Terrifyingly fancy. Like you could command an army or faint dramatically at any moment."

One of the maids, overhearing, cleared her throat politely. "Corsets are... structurally supportive garments."

Charlie pointed at him. "See? Even the maids knows, I meas the are girls so it makes sense."

I slumped forward onto the table. "I'm never wearing one again."

Charlie grinned. "You say that now. Wait until the maids get you tomorrow."

I whimpered.

The maids bowed. "We will fetch your crown for Eldrin, He still must bless it."

"CROWN?!?" I balked.

Too late they had left already, my arm outstretched like I could stop them. I turned back to the mirror, a little panicky.

The girl staring back at me looked regal.

Elegant.

Powerful.

Terrified.

"I can't do this," I whispered.

Charlie squeezed my hand. "You can."

"I'm not ready."

"No one ever is."

I swallowed hard.

"Ahhhh fine...," I said quietly steeling my resolve. "Okay. Let's... let's go. I said I wouldn't panic anymore, and the opposite is confidence"

The hallway looked like someone had opened a fantasy fashion magazine and dumped it out.

Riley came first, rogue leathers hugging her frame, hood down, daggers strapped neatly. She looked like she was ready to steal the crown instead of watch me get it.

Reia floated out in black‑and‑silver necromancer lace, soft and eerie, like she belonged in a cathedral full of ghosts.

Nate stumbled out in wizard robes that were definitely too big. "I look like a magical shower curtain."

Lucas followed, ceremonial armor polished to a mirror shine. He looked like a knight carved out of a storybook.

Alexa and Halden came out, and they were LOVING it.

Alexa twirled, her cat ears perked, tail wagging. "I look AMAZING."

Halden's fox tail swished proudly as she adjusted a red and white kimono. "I feel like royalty."

Riley snorted. "You look like you're a Japanese shrine maiden."

Halden gasped. "I do NOT."

Riley patted her head. "You do, and you look adorable."

Charlie stepped out before, me healer robes shimmering with gold thread. She looked like she could bless a kingdom or scold a child, depending on her mood.

Then I stepped out complaining, right behind her.

"Lucky.. why do you get comfy robes and I've gotta be all trussed up like a runway model!!"

"Simple squirt, I'm not queen you are." Her voice a little too smug.

The maids had done... everything.

I did NOT know what I was doing.

Everyone turned.

Riley let out a low whistle. "Damn."

Nate blinked. "You look like you're about to summon a dragon."

Reia smiled softly. "You look sooo beautiful."

Lucas's eyes widened like dinner plates. "Whoa..."

My cheeks frosted hard as I heard Lucas say that.

I felt my cheeks beginning to frost over...

Not now.

Not now.

Not now.

Charlie nudged me.

I ignored her.

Alexa clapped. "Zora, you look like a sexy QUEEN."

"I'm not a queen," I muttered.

Charlie whispered, "You're about to be."

My stomach dropped.

"oh..." Charlie gave me the look,"shit." I whispered.

"Zora..." Charlie said menacingly.

"Right right sorry... queens don't curse." I winced.

Riley grinned. "There it is."

Aah...she got me crap... I thought as I frosted more

I rubbed my face. "I can't believe I said that?!? And the maids, I let the maids do all this. I didn't even fight. I just, stood there."

Charlie wheezed. "You were a sleepy ragdoll. They lifted your arms and you just let them."

"I WASN'T CONSCIOUS ," I hissed. "I let strangers dress me like a mannequin."

"It's almost time.." this from elder, as he came through the door.

"Oh CRAP," I whispered.

Charlie squeezed my hand. "We're right behind you."

Lucas nodded. "We've got you."

Alexa and Halden stood tall. "We're with you."

Reia smiled. "Always."

Riley cracked her knuckles. "Let's go crown us a QUEEN!!!"

And then-

Eldrin appeared.

No-

Eldrin detonated into the hallway.

He burst out of a side door like he'd been launched, robes flying, hair glowing, eyes sparkling with divine caffeine.

"YOUR MAJESTY!" he shouted, voice cracking.

I flinched. "Oh no... oooh noo."

He sprinted toward me, vibrating like a tuning fork.

"YOU LOOK—YOU LOOK—YOU LOOK—RAVISHING!!!"

He squealed.

He actually squealed.

Charlie whispered, "He's reaching a fever pitch."

Eldrin clasped his hands. "THE STARS ARE ALIGNED! THE OMENS ARE PERFECT! THE CROWN IS READY! THE PEOPLE ARE GATHERING! THE CEREMONY—"

"Eldrin," I said.

He froze mid‑vibration.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"

"Breathe."

He inhaled sharply.

Then exhaled like he'd been underwater for ten minutes.

"Apologies," he said, trembling. "I am simply...overcome."

Eldrin pointed dramatically toward the courtyard. "THE TIME HAS COME!"

My stomach twisted again.

"Oh shit," I whispered.

Charlie let me have it, she squeezed my hand. "We're right behind you."

I shook my head. " I...I can't do this. I c...can't be a Queen!"

"BIG SIS ZORA!!!"

I barely had time to register the sound before Mira launched herself at me like a tiny, excited missile. Her arms wrap around my waist, squeezing with all the strength a seven‑year‑old can muster. I though I couldn't be squeezed any tighter, but I was wrong

"Ooof... hi Mira"

I stagger a little, then laughed...actually laughed. She was dressed in her absolute best, a soft blue dress with tiny embroidered flowers, hair tied with ribbons, shoes polished so much they sparkle.

Elias followed behind her, stiff and proper in a little formal vest and boots, trying very hard to look like a miniature guard. His hair was combed. His posture perfect. He had clearly been coached.

Mira looked up at me with huge eyes.

"Big sis Zora... why do you look so pretty?"

My heart melted.

Just...melted.

All the fear, all the panic, all the "oh shit I'm about to be a queen" evaporated like it was never there.

I crouched a little, the corset restricting movement I was only able to lean over a little. And trying to breath brushing her cheek. "Because today's special."

She gasped. "Is it because you're gonna be QUEEN?!"

Elias elbowed her. "Mira, you're supposed to be calm."

"I CAN'T BE CALM," she said, vibrating. "LOOK AT HER!!! She's like a snow queeen!!"

I laughed again...real, warm, and unguarded.

Then Kathrine stepped up behind them.

And she looked stunning.

Plain silk, soft cream color, hair braided simply, eyes warm. She looked like the kind of person who could command armies or tuck children into bed with equal skill.

She gave me a smile that felt like a hug.

"You look so beautifull," she says softly her hand going to my cheek.

I swallow. "I'm... trying not to pass out. This thing is too tight."

She laughed softly. "That's how you know it's on right dear."

Mira tugged my hand. "Can we go up with you? On the platform? Please? PLEASE?"

Elias tried to act composed, but his face betrayed him. "If...if it's allowed."

I look at Kathrine.

She nodded once. "If you want them with you, they may go."

I turned back to the kids. "Do you want to come up with me?"

Mira exploded.

"YESYESYESYESYESYES—"

She jumped up and down so fast she was like a blur.

Elias tried to maintain dignity but failed instantly. "Yes. Please. Yes."

Kathrine laughed softly. "They've been waiting all morning."

I took both their hands. And for a moment, everything felt okay. As we walked out to the city center.

Then—

Eldrin.

Oh gods.

Eldrin was already standing near the platform, vibrating at a frequency that could probably shatter glass. His robes flutter from the sheer force of his excitement.

"Holy... how did he, when did he get there!!" I said astonished.

"YOUR MAJESTY," he squealed, "WE MUST BEGIN BEFORE I—BEFORE I—BEFORE I—"

Charlie whispered behind me, "He's gonna vibrate himself apart."

Riley muttered, "He's gonna explode."

Nate said, "He's gonna ascend."

Lucas sighed. "He's going to pass out."

Alexa and Halden giggled.

I squeezed Mira and Elias's hands. Their presence making me feel weirdly calm.

"Okay," I said quietly. "Let's go before Eldrin becomes a hazard."

Eldrin gasped . "YES. PLEASE. BEFORE I—BEFORE I—"

(I had trouble with the picture)

He vibrated harder.

I step forward, kids at my side, gown shimmering, heart pounding.

But not from fear anymore.

From something warm, and steady.

Something real.
