The glass in Azrael’s hands immediately shattered, and he stood up, approaching the snake Beastman, but Thyrian stopped him, placing a hand on his chest.
"Move," Azrael’s cold voice rang out, and I stood up.
"Calm down, guys," I said, leaving the snake Beastman behind, not realizing, Ryker had already dragged him off the ground. He was now dangling in midair.
"What did you just say?" Veyra asked. His eyes had gone completely dark, and the red mist in them shimmered. Even his hands were sparkling with red energy.
"Guys, calm down," I said softly, but they were all giving the snake dude a cold look.
"Hey, guys!" I screamed, and everyone turned their gaze to me.
"You are not picking him, will you?" Veyra asked, and my lips curved into a small smile.
"Cat, can I?" I asked, and that instant she appeared. Her eyes looked sluggish, but at the same time laced with panic.
"I advise you don’t anger your Beastmen."
With that, she ran away.
"Really? You are abandoning me? No fair!" I screamed at the empty air, while they just stared like I had gone crazy.
"I’m not choosing him!" I mumbled. I didn’t even have it in mind to get another contracted consort. I’m okay with the four I already have.
Ryker let go of his shirt, and the guy fell to the ground with a cracking sound. I narrowed my eyes.
"Really?" I snapped.
Ryker’s smile stretched. "My hands slipped," he said.
Before I could utter another word, Azrael had already walked over to me.
"That’s enough playing house. Let’s just pack. I don’t care about taking care of any dam," he said straight up, and my lips parted to argue, but...
"I second that. Let’s leave," Veyra said.
But seeing I wasn’t moving an inch, they stopped in their tracks, and the snake Beastman walked towards me, holding my legs.
"I really have no home to go to. Can I come with you?" he pleaded, giving me the puppy eyes.
I stared at my Beastmen and winked. They all groaned in frustration.
"No," they said.
I chuckled. "I can’t take you in, but you can follow us. My city wouldn’t mind having a snake Beastman," I said, and Azrael bared his teeth, his eyes blazing with green-black mist.
I felt the snake tremble and immediately cling onto me. That would only make them more agitated.
"Do you know your way around here?" I asked, easing the atmosphere, as Ryker had been stepping closer earlier.
"Yeah. I pretty much stayed here for a while. Of course I do," he said and beamed, revealing his sparkling teeth.
I smirked. "I like him already," I mumbled.
Veyra grunted in disapproval. "I don’t," he said.
I sighed, reached for the map, and tossed it to him.
"Do you know the path? Lead the way!"
"Yes. It should be the southern part," he mumbled, stood up, and pointed at some large trees.
"We follow that way. It leads to the southern area," he said. He sounded more confident now. He must know where he’s headed.
"Guys, gear up. We will follow him," I said.
Veyra stepped closer. I could feel his breath behind my ear, and fvck, this startled me. I almost flew away if his hand hadn’t caught my elbow.
"I don’t trust him. We should follow a different route," he said.
I turned to him. "Stop being jealous. He’s harmless. I know this because I can see his power glands, It’s no big deal... and what trap? Aren’t we all S-rank now?" I asked, and they exchanged looks.
"Come on. Are you seriously threatened by a weak snake?" I asked, and all their gazes darkened.
"Never," Azrael said and placed the backpack on himself.
"Guys, let’s go. We can’t keep Raven waiting," he added, following behind the snake, who seemed so focused on the map.
Ryker rolled his eyes and reached for his own bag, following Azrael.
Veyra looked at me in silence for a second, and Thyrian walked closer to me.
"Master, I trust your judgment, but there’s something off about him," he whispered in my ear.
I diverted my gaze to the snake Beastman. I could see the low flow of mana in his chest. He didn’t look harmful in any way, though.
Thyrian landed a kiss on my forehead and followed behind the guys.
"Raven, come on," they called, and I snapped out of my thoughts, following after them.
"Cat! What do you think of the new Beastman?" I asked in my head, and suddenly Cat appeared, floating in the air.
"What’s up, Raven?" she chirped, like she didn’t abandon me earlier, I just glared at her, and her sheepish smile disappeared.
"He’s a snake," she started.
I rolled my eyes. "Obviously I know. As we can see!" I said, pointing at the guy.
"But his species is very rare, known to have gone extinct. He might be the only one remaining," she hinted, and I stopped in my tracks.
"Any information about his family?" I asked, looking around.
Cat shook her head negatively, and I sucked on my bottom lip.
"How did he get trapped inside for three days? Did no one notice?" I mumbled to myself worriedly, but he heard, and the snake Beastsman just stopped walking, looking dejected.
"No one knows I exist. What’s the use of being seen or known? Even if they knew I fell into the pond?" he mumbled.
I felt for him because I, too, had once been overlooked and unseen by everyone
"Just lead the way," I said, not daring to drag on with my questions.
Azrael gave me a cold, nasty look as I continued walking.
Just then, a cold hand suddenly landed on my shoulder, and I staggered, landing straight on the floor in panic, but when I looked up, I was just gazing at the empty air.
"Are you okay?" Veyra asked, gently stretching out his hand.
I nodded and placed mine in his, but my body suddenly went limp that second, and I passed out.
"I’m the only one for you, Raven. Your Beastmen... they don’t even trust you. Dissolve the contract with them. Be mine."
A soft, whispery voice echoed in my ear, I felt heavy and hypnotized.
"Be mine," I mumbled and closed my eyes. "You’re the only one that cares for me."
