Susan sat up straight, excited.
But then she remembered the change in the cut she would get from gifts if she signed with a company, and she asked hesitantly, "Young Master Wu, if I sign with a company, will my cut of the gift revenue be even smaller?"
Wu Yun smiled. "The advantage of signing with a company is that you get a base salary as long as you stream for enough hours. And since you’re just playing games anyway, that’s easy to achieve."
"As an independent streamer, there’s a high chance you’ll fail miserably. The company spends resources to develop you, so it’s only right for them to take a commission."
"Of course, the choice is yours. After all, we’re friends who know each other well. Whether you join my company or become an independent streamer, I can support you."
But then his tone shifted. "It’s just that the level of support for those two options won’t be the same."
"You don’t have to answer me right away. You can think about it for a couple of days."
Zeng Siqi chimed in with a smile, "Come on, eat! I see you two have barely touched your chopsticks."
Susan and Tang Tang took a few bites. Susan noticed Tang Tang’s hesitant expression and knew she was too shy to speak up, since she didn’t know Wu Yun very well.
But as her best friend since high school, now that Susan had a direction for her own future, she wanted to help her bestie out.
"Young Master Wu, you still haven’t told Tang Tang what she could do!" Susan said flirtatiously, rubbing her calf against Wu Yun’s under the table.
Since they were just chatting, Wu Yun didn’t hold back. "A beauty like Tang Tang studied to be a secretary, and your looks are fantastic! No matter where you apply for a secretary or assistant position, you’d pass easily."
"I’m just not sure if you’re interested in sticking to a job that matches your major. Do you have any other special talents?"
Hearing Wu Yun’s question, Susan immediately piped up, "Tang Tang is a great writer! Her prose and style are excellent. She even won awards for it in school, and she wrote a lot of the scripts for the campus radio station."
Tang Tang blushed at the praise. Looking at Wu Yun’s handsome face, she said shyly, "Don’t listen to her nonsense. I just wrote a few scripts, that’s all."
Wu Yun smiled. "Being a good writer has many advantages! Whether it’s writing advertorials for people or coming up with promotional copy, those are great ways to make money."
"You can do that as a side hustle while you have a main job, but it’s really just for making a little extra cash. There’s basically no chance of striking it rich."
"Of course, if you like to read novels, my top recommendation would be to write them. If you have good prose and write well, you can start it as a side hustle to earn some living expenses."
"But if your novel takes off one day, a single month of royalties could, at the very least, equal a normal person’s annual salary! Or even more!"
"Novels also have income from ’gifts.’ If some whale gives your book a Silver Alliance or a Golden Alliance, and the quality is high, then you’re ready for takeoff!"
A look of understanding dawned on Susan’s face. "Oh, so it’s like gifts for streamers!"
Wu Yun nodded in agreement.
"The most important thing is the copyright! If a film or TV production company takes notice, the licensing fee alone can make you a fortune."
Listening to the future Wu Yun was painting, Tang Tang grew thoughtful.
"I have another company that recently spent several million to acquire the rights to two novels. And remember, that’s just one derivative income stream from a novel. If you’re interested, you can search how much the rights for *Breaking the Heavens* sold for!"
The three women all took out their phones. A quick Baidu search showed them that selling the rights was like winning the lottery.
Seeing their excited expressions, Wu Yun threw cold water on their dreams. "Don’t get ahead of yourselves. That’s the kind of income only the authors at the very top of the pyramid make."
"But writing novels is exhausting. If you have a slow typing speed, it’s basically a year-round, no-days-off job. I haven’t read anything on the female-oriented channels, though, so I don’t know what it’s like over there."
Tang Tang smiled and asked, "Young Master Wu, could you recommend a website to publish on?"
"Singularity. Definitely Singularity. It’s the biggest site in the country, but being the biggest also means the competition is fierce. As for the female-oriented genres and all that, I’m not clear on the specifics. You can do your own research."
Wu Yun wasn’t some sucker who felt the need to ’alleviate the poverty’ of every beautiful woman he met, so he just gave her the basics and left it at that.
This was unlike the detailed advice and offer of help he had just given Susan.
"Young Master Wu, you have so many companies. Can’t you find Tang Tang a job?" Susan asked shamelessly, after realizing that writing novels didn’t make much money in the beginning.
Wu Yun smiled and refused. "I already have a male secretary. Besides, Tang Tang hasn’t decided where she wants to focus her career yet. It’s not too late to reconsider after you two have it all figured out."
Tang Tang nudged Susan’s leg with her own, stopping her from saying anything more. Susan immediately shut her mouth.
The barbecue meal lasted for over an hour.
Wu Yun stood up, rubbing his slightly bloated stomach, and called the waiter over for the bill.
"Didn’t we agree it was my treat?" Zeng Siqi stood up and blocked Wu Yun’s way.
Wu Yun didn’t argue. ’It’s just one meal,’ he thought. ’I’ll just give her a few hundred million tonight.’
After paying the bill, the group stood on the roadside, watching the cars pass by.
"We’re heading back to the hotel, the usual place! Where are you two going?" Zeng Siqi asked, looking at Susan and Tang Tang.
Susan was very tempted...
But she glanced at Tang Tang. It wouldn’t be safe to let her go back to campus alone.
"I’d love to go with you guys and ask Young Master Wu for more insights on streaming," Susan replied, without a hint of shyness.
"Wait a second, let me ask Tang Tang."
With that, Susan pulled Tang Tang aside.
"Tang Tang, I think you probably understand the relationship between me and that Young Master Wu by now, right?" Susan asked directly.
Tang Tang asked back, a little uncertainly, "You two... have a thing going on?"
Susan laughed. "It’s not just me. That Zeng Siqi, too..."
"Otherwise, why do you think he told me so much about streaming and even said he’d support me?"
Tang Tang looked into Susan’s eyes, trying to figure out what she was thinking. Seeing the glittering look in them, Tang Tang asked, "Shanshan, what are you trying to say?"
Susan said bluntly, "I’m saying you reap what you sow. Why else would someone go out of their way to help you think through all this? You’ve seen how hard it is these past few weeks to find a job you actually like."
"I don’t know if you understood what Young Master Wu was implying. When he said a novel can take off from ’gifts,’ he meant that *he* has the power to make that happen!"
"And even if you don’t write a novel and want a job in your field, he can provide that, too. Didn’t you hear him say he has a male secretary? That means he *doesn’t* have a female one!"
"Think about it. A beautiful secretary like you... even if you claim there’s nothing going on with the boss, everyone will assume you’re sleeping together! Unless you go work for a female boss."
If Wu Yun knew what Susan was saying, he would have cried foul! He had just been speaking plainly; his words were meant to be taken at face value. He wasn’t asking her to do a reading comprehension exercise!
