As the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially for someone like Bai Yue, who had only recently tasted the forbidden fruit.

After not seeing each other for over a month, Bai Yue was incredibly proactive, treating Wu Yun to what could only be described as premium service.

During the day, besides accompanying Bai Yue to her classes, Wu Yun would have Wei Wu drive them around the area whenever they were free, hoping to find a suitable property.

Using the school as the center of their search, the three of them began to explore the surrounding neighborhoods.

From the car, Wu Yun deliberately judged the age of the residential complexes by their exteriors. He noticed that while many had been renovated on the outside, a single glance at their structure revealed they were still just old-fashioned apartment buildings.

Their names were always something like "So-and-so Street Courtyard" or "Such-and-such Community," exuding a dated aura that hit you in the face.

Wu Yun even found a local real estate agent, who led him and Bai Yue to tour the insides of several complexes.

The results, however, were disappointing. Many of the residential complexes around the Capital City Normal University Haidian Campus had been built in the 1990s or the year 2000. Not only were their amenities outdated, but their property management was also a far cry from that of newer developments.

After the agent told him the price per square meter for these places, Wu Yun could only shake his head.

’Spending sixty or seventy thousand yuan per square meter on a place like this? I’d have to have more money than sense!’

There were one or two newer complexes that looked relatively modern, but they were all a considerable distance from the campus.

After mulling it over, Wu Yun decided it was best to wait and check out other districts later on.

Since Bai Yue didn’t have her driver’s license yet, buying a place too far away would be inconvenient.

Capital City’s public transportation was convenient, with the subway covering nearly the entire urban area, but ’squeezing onto the train every day is no way to live’.

So, Wu Yun strongly insisted that Bai Yue get her driver’s license through the university program.

The first day he snuck into Bai Yue’s class, Wu Yun was immediately a conspicuous presence. There weren’t many male students to begin with, so the sudden appearance of a new face drew frequent glances.

During the break, while Wu Yun was playing on his phone, he suddenly heard a woman’s arrogant voice. "Oh, Bai Yue, so this is the out-of-town boyfriend you’re always talking about? He’s not bad looking! I’ll admit, he’s a bit more handsome than my boyfriend."

’So he’s just a pretty face,’ Wu Yun thought, deciphering the subtext in Yang Lili’s words. ’In every other respect, he can’t compare to her boyfriend.’

Before Bai Yue could respond, Yang Lili added, "But I have to say, a long-distance relationship really isn’t a great idea! That senior, Zhang Peng, seems like a much better fit for you."

Bai Yue glanced at Yang Lili, not wanting to engage, and remained silent.

Wu Yun looked up at Yang Lili, and her stats immediately appeared in his mind: 91/89/85. Her Affinity, however, was the first negative score he had seen on a woman besides Li Yuantao: -5.

Seeing that neither Wu Yun nor Bai Yue was taking the bait, though Lei Lei was fuming beside them, Yang Lili just smiled. "Well, I won’t disturb you two any longer!" she said, speaking to no one in particular.

Yang Lili turned and left. She had achieved her objective, so it didn’t matter to her whether Bai Yue had reacted or not.

"Yueyue! Are you just going to let her stir up trouble like that?" Lei Lei demanded, clearly annoyed.

Bai Yue just smiled and explained, "Ah Yun already knows all about Zhang Peng. They met once outside of school, and right after that, Zhang Peng got into a car accident! He must have been too embarrassed, because he hasn’t bothered me since."

Hearing this, Lei Lei relaxed a little, but she was still indignant. "Just look at that bitch. So what if her boyfriend is a Capital City local? His family has a bit of money, but it’s not *her* money! She talks like she’s already married into the family! It’s only been a month, and she’s already started putting on a Capital City accent?"

"Don’t let it get to you. Who cares if he’s a Capital City local? Plenty of locals are still crammed into basement apartments!" Bai Yue didn’t mention that she, too, was a Capital City native. It wasn’t something she felt was worth bragging about.

Instead, she joked, "Didn’t the school give you the chance to get your own Capital City registration when you enrolled? You’re the one who turned it down."

Lei Lei waved it off. "I’d just have to transfer it back after four years anyway. Besides, I’m not planning on buying a house in the Capital City. There’s no way I could afford it!"

Hearing this, Wu Yun chimed in jokingly, "Then you should just do what she did and find a Capital City boyfriend. Problem solved!"

Lei Lei wasn’t offended. She just laughed and shot back, "I’m not as shameless as Yang Lili! Besides, even if you start dating someone, there’s no guarantee you’ll end up getting married!"

"I’d rather just study hard, get my teaching certificate, and go back to my hometown to be a teacher. Wouldn’t that be nice? Why would I want to stay in the Capital City with all this pressure!"

"Exactly! The quality of life in a big city isn’t necessarily higher than in a small town!"

Wu Yun strongly agreed with her. In his past life, he’d seen countless stories about the Capital City. Many "Beijing Drifters" spent the better part of their lives there without ever managing to buy an apartment.

And even if they did, the apartment was usually old and dilapidated, or located in a remote suburb.

Some people even commuted five or six hours a day, waking up before dawn to catch a bus and pack themselves onto the subway.

And they weren’t a small minority, either. Wu Yun couldn’t understand why they did it. ’Even if the salaries in the Capital City are higher, isn’t that life just exhausting?’

In his past life, Wu Yun had bought a house in Jingyang and had a mortgage, but his housing fund from his teaching job had largely offset the financial pressure. On top of that, he still had plenty of savings left over, so his life in Jingyang had been quite comfortable.

In this life, there was no way he would ever experience what it was like to be a wage slave.

After class, Wu Yun dragged Bai Yue to the mall.

"You need to actually spend the allowance I gave you! Buy yourself some nice food, get some new clothes, don’t be so frugal! Buy the best! Why haven’t you spent a single penny of it yet?" Wu Yun chided Bai Yue as he browsed through a luxury boutique.

"I was just trying to save it for you, in case you needed it later! The allowance my dad gives me is plenty! He gives me three thousand every month!" Bai Yue pouted. She thought Wu Yun was being far too extravagant. ’Even if you have money, you can’t just throw it around like this!’ So, she had put the one million yuan he gave her into a fixed-term deposit account.

Wu Yun was exasperated. He quickly explained his recent successes to her, even showing her his bank account balance.

Bai Yue was stunned, but she managed to hide her intense curiosity while they were out in public.

"So, don’t worry about money. Just buy, buy, buy! When you’re dressed to the nines, no one will dare look down on me!"

Wu Yun ended up buying Bai Yue a mountain of luxury clothes, bags, and necklaces, spending a total of 560,000 yuan—and that was with Bai Yue trying her best to stop him.

A few days passed in a flash, and the social media post Wu Yun had asked Bai Yue to make proved to be very effective.

After the post went up, Wu Yun accompanied Bai Yue to class and noticed that the girl, Yang Lili, wore a sour expression all day. More importantly, her habit of looking down her nose at everyone seemed to have toned down a bit.
