Happy times are always fleeting. In the blink of an eye, the date for the first World Internet Conference was fast approaching.
November 18th
At the school gate, Wu Yun looked at a reluctant Bai Yue and smiled, caressing her cheek. "Hurry inside! Your class is about to start."
Seeing that Bai Yue’s eyes were still welling up with tears, Wu Yun sighed. "Don’t be like this! Cheer up! If you miss me, you can just come see me on the weekend!"
"I promise you! I’ll come to the Capital City to spend Christmas with you, by Christmas at the latest!"
With Wu Yun’s assurance, a smile finally bloomed on Bai Yue’s face, but the redness at the corners of her eyes made her look endearing and vulnerable.
Wu Yun pulled Bai Yue into a hug and gave her a loud smooch on the lips.
"Hey! You got spit all over me!" Bai Yue complained, though a smile played on her lips.
"Alright, I’m off! We have to catch a flight to Hangzhou and then get a car to Wuzhen."
Bai Yue knew Wu Yun’s business was important. She felt a shared sense of honor and immense pride that he had been invited to a world-class conference. ’That’s my boyfriend!’
Only after Wu Yun’s car had driven away did Bai Yue reluctantly pull her gaze back. She turned to Lei Lei, who was standing beside her with a teasing look, and said, "What are you looking at? Haven’t you ever seen a long-distance couple before?"
Lei Lei covered her mouth and giggled. "Nope! I never knew our tough Yueyue had such a sentimental side!"
"I just miss him already!~"
...
The arrivals exit of Hang City Xiaoshan Airport.
Wang Hao stood at the exit, periodically checking the time on his watch and messages on his phone.
It had been several days since he’d left the Little Red Car Company office. Ever since he received Wu Yun’s call, Wang Hao’s mind hadn’t been at ease.
’Finally, I get to do what a secretary is supposed to do!’
’Before, all I did was send Wu Yun data and compiled reports every day—work that any office clerk could handle.’
’Drawing a high salary while being idle all day, and occasionally hearing office gossip, made me feel almost guilty about taking the money.’
So, taking advantage of the downtime, he had been studying hard every day to improve himself.
After receiving Wu Yun’s call, Wang Hao first went to Li Qiuliang, relayed Wu Yun’s list of requirements, and requested a large contingency fund to cover the travel expenses.
Only then did he fly directly to Hangzhou.
Wang Hao hadn’t been idle during his days in Hang City. He first coordinated with Wu Yun to book flights for him and his companion from the Capital City to Hang City.
Next, Wang Hao rented a business van and drove to Wuzhen to familiarize himself with the conference schedule.
’After all, as his secretary, I can’t just lead Wu Yun around the venue like a chicken with its head cut off!’
Wang Hao had originally planned to book two rooms in Wuzhen, but he was informed that during the World Internet Conference, all accommodations in the entire town, including hotels and guesthouses, would suspend commercial operations to be fully dedicated to housing conference guests.
He inquired with the conference staff and was told the rooms were all reserved for VIPs and attendees from around the globe. In other words, only invitation holders could get accommodation.
So, Wang Hao reported this to Wu Yun, explaining that Wu Yun would have to check in personally at the Zhen Shui Hotel using his invitation and ID. The main conference venue was also inside the hotel.
Wang Hao then booked two single rooms in Jiaxing for himself and the bodyguard. Luckily, he had acted quickly, as many hotels were already full due to the large number of conference attendees.
’One good thing about being a secretary is that as long as you’ve done your duties, you have free time when the boss is on a business trip and doesn’t need anything.’
So, after arranging the rest of the itinerary and before Wu Yun’s arrival, Wang Hao spent two days exploring Jiaxing.
The day before Wu Yun’s flight, Wang Hao drove back to the rental agency. After getting the invoice needed for reimbursement, he swapped the vehicle for a Mercedes-Benz to use for the airport pickup and as their transport for the next few days.
’I don’t know if it’s because of the World Internet Conference,’ Wang Hao thought, ’but there are a lot of foreigners coming out of the arrivals gate.’ He could hear a medley of languages, and even some of the English had what sounded like a curry-flavored accent.
Wang Hao made a resolution. ’After this World Internet Conference is over, I have to work hard on my foreign language skills. I passed the Level 6 English test, so basic communication isn’t a problem, but as Wu Yun’s business expands, it’s bound to go international. When that happens, I’ll probably be the one who gets left behind.’
’In other words, even if I stop being a secretary, being a Master of English would open up a lot of career opportunities.’
Just as Wang Hao’s mind was wandering, his gaze drifted to the exit, where he spotted a tall and a short figure—it was Wu Yun and Wei Wu.
Wang Hao quickly squeezed through the crowd, shouting, "President Wu! Over here!"
Wang Hao had shouted in the Sichuan dialect, instantly drawing the attention of many people nearby.
Seeing Wang Hao step forward and take the backpack from Wu Yun’s back, someone remarked, "Who’s this rich kid? He’s even got a bodyguard and an assistant."
Wu Yun nodded at Wang Hao. "Thanks for your hard work."
Wang Hao smiled in response. "Of course, of course! President Wu, please follow me. The car is this way."
As they walked, Wang Hao briefed Wu Yun on the situation in Jiaxing and Wuzhen, and they soon arrived at the parking garage.
After Wei Wu took the driver’s seat, Wang Hao opened the car door for Wu Yun. He only got into the passenger seat himself after Wu Yun was settled inside.
After getting in the car, Wang Hao took a stack of documents from a file folder. "President Wu," he said, "this is the schedule for tomorrow’s conference and the materials for the related topics."
Wu Yun took the materials, looking them over as he listened to Wang Hao’s report. "President Wu, the agenda is split into several breakout forums. Before the opening ceremony, there is a ’New Media, New Ecosystem’ forum."
"The main summit of the conference isn’t until 4:30 PM. Dinner will be held at a designated location; entry is by invitation only."
"The second day is all various breakout forums. I’ve listed them out. Because of scheduling, many of the forums conflict with each other, so we’ll have to choose the ones you’re most interested in."
"The third day only runs for the morning, concluding after lunch."
Listening to Wang Hao’s report reminded Wu Yun that they hadn’t booked their return flights to Rongcheng yet. "Let me look over these topics first," he said. "If nothing catches my interest, we’ll head back to Rongcheng on the second day."
Hearing this, Wang Hao fell silent, not daring to disturb him.
Wu Yun first looked over the materials Wang Hao had summarized, confirming that they matched the official conference schedule perfectly.
The documents were very detailed, listing the time and location for each topic, the points of discussion, and information on the moderators. Some of it was Wang Hao’s own summary, and the rest was from the official conference brochures.
After about ten minutes of reading, Wu Yun concluded that the last morning’s topics were all high-level discussions on international and domestic policy. That was the big shots’ arena; there was no need for him to attend.
He then said to Wang Hao, "Go ahead and book our flight back to Rongcheng for noon on the 21st."
