A middle-aged police officer in a reflective vest was shouting hoarsely through a megaphone. With the help of his colleagues, it took them over ten minutes to finally disperse the crowd by the river, leaving behind a trashed ground and pools of blood.
Some people, oblivious, had just finished shouting the countdown. Only after the crowd was cleared did they see the scene and realize the magnitude of the disaster.
A dozen or so ambulances, lights flashing and sirens wailing, were parked by the roadside.
People were continuously being loaded onto ambulances, which then sped away. More ambulances were rushing in from the distance, but they had to slow down as they encountered the dispersing crowds.
Even after being dispersed, the surrounding crowds were still dense.
Looking at the bodies lying quietly on the cold ground, many people had complex expressions—some of sorrow, others of relief.
A man knelt before a woman whose face was somewhat misshapen, sobbing into his hands. "Ashe! I was wrong! I shouldn't have brought you here! I was wrong! Please wake up!!"
With bloodshot eyes, the man turned to look at the paramedics pushing a stretcher. Mustering strength from nowhere, he scrambled over to a nurse, knelt, and clung to her leg. "Please! Save my wife first! Please!"
"Please, take another look at her!"
The nurse tried to pry the man's hands off, but they were like iron clamps.
She glanced helplessly at the nearby police officers maintaining order and then said, "Sir! Please let go! You're only delaying us from saving your wife!"
As soon as the nurse said this, she felt the hands clutching her leg loosen.
They were already short-staffed, but their purpose was to save lives. So, the nurse went to the man's wife.
Looking at the woman's deformed face, the nurse first felt for a pulse on her neck. There was none, and her skin was abnormally cold.
She then shone a flashlight into the woman's pupils and observed no reaction.
The nurse was just about to attempt CPR, but with the very first compression, she felt the woman's sternum collapse.
The nurse knew the woman's sternum and ribs were almost completely fractured. Combined with the lack of a heartbeat and her dropping body temperature, the experienced nurse knew there was no possibility of bringing her back.
She stood up, shook her head regretfully at the man, and then covered the woman's body with a disposable sheet.
After doing all this, the nurse hurried off without a moment's rest to the next injured person who still showed signs of life and began administering first aid.
Leaving the man behind with a look of utter despair.
....
At nine in the morning, a piercing ringtone jolted Wu Yun awake. He had only fallen asleep around two or three in the morning.
"Ah Yun! Are you okay?" Bai Yue's concerned voice came through the phone.
Wu Yun put on a robe and stepped away from the bed. "I'm fine," he said. "How could anything happen to me when I'm at home?"
"I saw your video! It was absolutely terrifying!" Bai Yue said, her voice still trembling with fear. "Especially seeing people fall and get instantly swallowed by the crowd... an indescribable fear just washed over me."
"I saw the news this morning! They said many people died! And everyone online is talking about you!"
Wu Yun chatted with Bai Yue for a few minutes before another call came in. He quickly said, "I have to go! Someone else is calling!"
"Wait!"
"What is it?"
"I know it might be a bad time to say this, but I still want to wish you a happy birthday! Stay safe! And come back to Capital City soon! So we can go buy furniture for the new house together!"
After hanging up with Bai Yue, Wu Yun composed himself before calling Peng Zhijian back.
"President Peng! Good morning!" Wu Yun's complex emotions from the previous night had subsided, and he greeted Peng Zhijian calmly.
"President Wu! Good morning!"
To Wu Yun's surprise, Peng Zhijian didn't immediately ask about the trending incident. Instead, he said with a laugh, "President Wu, you must have heard that I resigned from Tencent!"
"I did! President Li told me," Wu Yun replied.
Peng Zhijian continued, "I'm calling today to invite you, President Wu, to the grand opening of our Yuan Sheng Capital in Capital City on January 15th!"
Wu Yun stood on the balcony, glancing at the police cordon still up around the Bund. He then said, "President Peng! If I have the time, I'll definitely be there."
Peng Zhijian laughed and said, "Excellent! We'll be eagerly awaiting your arrival, President Wu! My assistant will send the invitation to your secretary shortly!"
After chatting about a few other things, Peng Zhijian finally brought the conversation around to the previous night's events. "President Wu, you've completely blown up online because of this!"
Wu Yun's accurate prediction made him known to many people who don't even follow finance, and it has netizens everywhere speculating about just who this mysterious figure is!
So, Wu Yun gave Peng Zhijian a brief explanation of what happened before hanging up.
For the next hour, Wu Yun's phone didn't stop ringing. Gao Qiang, Liu Yongheng, and managers from various companies all called to express their concern and, while they were at it, to probe for details about last night.
After finally finishing the calls, Wu Yun set down his slightly hot phone.
"Sir! Would you like some breakfast? I can heat it up for you." Aunt Wang came over and asked when she saw Wu Yun was off the phone.
Qi Fei and the two others had already finished breakfast while Wu Yun was on the phone and were now sitting on the sofa, scrolling through Weibo.
"Sorry to trouble you, Aunt Wang!" Wu Yun said with a smile.
Wu Yun had just sat down in the dining room when the doorbell rang.
"Coming, coming!" Qi Fei slipped on her slippers, hurried to the door, and peered through the peephole. She saw the building's butler standing outside with two men in police uniforms.
CLICK~ The heavy lock disengaged.
When the door opened, the butler, Li Hao, saw that the person who opened it was Qi Fei, a famous beauty in the residential complex and the mistress of this very property.
Li Hao didn't dare stare. He bowed slightly and said, "Miss Qi! These two police officers would like to speak with President Wu to understand the situation last night and to get a copy of his video."
A younger officer behind him was staring at Qi Fei's face and only snapped out of it when the older officer nudged him lightly.
"Hello, Miss Qi! We're from the City Police Criminal Investigation Division. We're here today to understand what President Wu saw last night and to copy his video as evidence. Here are our credentials!" The older officer took out his badge and held it in front of Qi Fei so she could easily read the information on it.
Just as Qi Fei was hesitating whether to let them in, she heard Wu Yun call out, "Senior! Let them in!"
Qi Fei smiled and said, "Officers! And Butler Li! Please, come in!"
Li Hao smiled and agreed, then took three pairs of disposable shoe covers from his bag, handing one pair to each of the two officers.
After the three of them put on the shoe covers, they entered. Li Hao, walking in last, pulled the door closed behind them.
It was the two officers' first time stepping into one of Modu's most expensive luxury residences per square foot. The younger officer curiously looked around at the apartment's layout.
Sitting in the dining room, Wu Yun said with a smile, "Please, make yourselves comfortable. I'll copy the video for you after I finish my breakfast!"
