Rebirth: I have Monopoly System

Chapter 348 - 330: Reunion Dinner

After some pleasantries, everyone expressed their thanks upon learning that Wu Yun had bought all the gifts by the door.

Wu Yun then took the opportunity to pull two bulging red envelopes from his pocket, handing one to Qi Ruixi and the other to Huang Guo.

"Go on, thank your uncle!"

Qi Ruixi obediently said thank you.

Huang Guo, however, took the red envelope and, right in front of everyone, stuck his little hand inside. He pulled out a thick wad of cash, which scattered all over the floor.

"Xiaowu! This is far too much! You shouldn’t have! A small token for the kids is more than enough!" said Qi Zi, who was watching the children, speaking up at once.

Qi Fei, her arm linked through Wu Yun’s, smiled and explained, "Auntie! Don’t worry about it. Wu Yun can afford it! He earned all this money himself."

As if to prove her point, Second Uncle Qi Sheng exclaimed in surprise, "Feitian Moutai! Wu Yun, you really shouldn’t have! Buying such expensive liquor!"

At this, Qi Chongwu seized the opportunity to ask, "Xiaowu, what is it you do for a living?"

When it came to Wu Yun, a smile involuntarily bloomed on Qi Fei’s face. "Grandpa! Wu Yun runs his own company, which is why he can afford to buy all this."

"So, about the red envelope money he gave... Auntie, Sister Na, you should just hold onto it for the kids!"

Such were the customs in Huaxia. After another round of polite refusals, everyone finally accepted and offered their thanks.

Afterward, Wu Yun sat awkwardly in his chair, feeling like an animal being gawked at in a zoo, answering the crowd’s questions with a few words here and there.

"Ah! I know who Wu Yun is!" Huang Xin exclaimed, then turned to Qi Guo with a shocked expression. "Youngest Uncle! I can’t believe you managed to land an Overseas Dragon as a son-in-law!"

Huang Xin’s words had thoroughly piqued everyone’s curiosity. Just as someone was about to ask what he meant, there was another knock on the front door.

"KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! Grandpa! Open the door!" A clear, young boy’s voice rang out from outside.

Since Wu Yun was closest to the door, he turned and took a few steps to open it.

A four- or five-year-old boy holding a toy pistol rushed in, shouting, "Nobody move! PEW PEW PEW!"

Behind him, a bespectacled woman with a scholarly air smiled and nodded to Wu Yun as she entered. "Qi Xiaoyu! Mind your manners! Go give the toys you bought for your younger cousins to them!"

Hearing his mother, Qi Xiaoyu turned back to take two small boxes from her and ran over to his younger cousins.

Through the ensuing introductions, Wu Yun learned that this refined woman was Li Xiaoxia, the daughter-in-law of Qi Fei’s eldest uncle and a high school teacher.

Despite the brief interruption from Qi Xiaoyu, the conversation quickly returned to being all about Wu Yun.

"Everyone wash up! Dinner’s ready!" the ever-bustling grandmother called out from the kitchen doorway.

Wu Yun let out a sigh of relief, but then a headache started to form. ’I might have to endure another family gathering just like this one in a few days.’

However, after about half an hour of conversation, Wu Yun had a pretty good grasp of what Qi Guo’s two older brothers and one older sister did for a living.

Qi Guo’s eldest brother, Qi Xiu, was the head of the Jingyang City Construction Bureau. One could say that Qi Guo owed a part of his fortune to Qi Xiu’s assistance.

Qi Guo’s second brother, Qi Sheng, had followed in the patriarch’s footsteps to become a police officer and was now a second-in-command.

As for Qi Guo’s sister, Qi Zi, she had married a businessman from Guangdong Province. After years of hard work, the two of them had started from scratch and built up considerable wealth.

With four generations under one roof, the dining room’s round table couldn’t seat everyone. So, the men took the main table, while the women and children gathered on small stools around the coffee table.

Qi Chongwu was in such a good mood that he brought out his treasured collection of baijiu.

"Dad! You’re really playing favorites! Xiaowu shows up once and you immediately bring out your special-supply liquor. I’ve had my eye on that for over a decade! I guess I have Xiaowu to thank for finally getting a taste!" Qi Xiu, his hair combed immaculately, joked, not daring to put on his official airs in front of Qi Chongwu.

Only a select few ever got to taste this special-supply liquor. Qi Chongwu’s bottle had been a gift from one of his old comrades-in-arms who came to visit.

"It’s Xiaowu’s first time visiting! As the grandfather of the house, I can’t be stingy! Today, let’s all have a few drinks and enjoy ourselves!" At Qi Chongwu’s word, everyone at the table raised their glasses.

After three rounds of drinks, Qi Xiu finally spoke up. "Youngest Brother! Are you still planning to expand your company’s operations in Jingyang? There’s a plot of land behind Five Continents Square going up for auction soon. Any interest?"

Qi Guo put down his chopsticks, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and then said, "Big Brother! Are you talking about the one by the river?"

Qi Guo hesitated. He had been eyeing that riverside plot for a long time, but with the development plans Wu Yun had provided, he was now conflicted.

According to the plan, the S11 light rail, an extension of Metro Line 3, was set to reach Jingyang. A new station entrance was planned for Five Continents Square, which would certainly cause property values along the line to skyrocket.

The timeline was a bit of a problem, though. Surveying for the S11 line wouldn’t even start until 2022, with construction beginning in 2023. By the time it was open to the public, it would be another three or four years down the line.

So, compared to the other plots currently available along Rongcheng’s metro lines, the land behind Five Continents Square was a classic "chicken rib" for Qi Guo: not tasty enough to eat, but too much of a waste to throw away.

’If Wu Yun knew what Qi Guo was thinking, he would have definitely told him to choose Rongcheng! It was a surefire profit!’

Fortunately, Qi Guo only hesitated for a moment before saying, "Big Brother, you know my focus is shifting toward Rongcheng these days. I’ve got my eye on a few plots there that I’m about to go investigate. So when the time comes, I might not have the capital to bid on this riverside land!"

Qi Xiu didn’t seem to mind. "Since you have better options, I won’t interfere with your decision. But if you need any help in Rongcheng, just let me know. I still have some clout with my counterparts there."

Qi Guo nodded with a smile. "Alright! I might just take you up on that!"

"Anytime, just say the word. Come on, another round!" Qi Xiu raised his cup and took a sip of the smooth, fragrant baijiu.

Just then, Second Brother Qi Sheng, his face slightly flushed from the alcohol, glanced furtively toward the living room. "Youngest Brother, let me give you a heads-up. The provincial authorities are about to crack down on entertainment venues. I know you go to those places a lot—even if it’s for business—so you’d better watch yourself."

"I don’t want to get a call asking me to come bail you out of a police station. That would be a real loss of face!"

Qi Guo’s face burned with embarrassment, being called out like this in front of the younger generation. ’That’s just how his second brother was after a few drinks: brutally honest.’

"Second Brother, that’s enough! I barely go to places like that anymore!" Qi Guo retorted.

At Qi Guo’s protest, Qi Sheng seemed to realize he’d spoken out of turn. He cleared his throat. "Ahem! Just... be careful. Anyway! Wu Yun, if you ever run into any trouble you can’t handle, just let me know!"

Sensing Qi Sheng changing the subject, Wu Yun smiled and helped diffuse the awkwardness for Qi Guo. "Okay, Second Uncle!"

"Come! Let me propose a toast to everyone! Happy New Year!"

By the end of the meal, Wu Yun had added everyone at the table on WeChat and had even successfully infiltrated the "Our Loving Family" group chat.

Wu Yun noticed, however, that the son of Qi Fei’s Second Uncle, Qi Sheng, wasn’t there. When he asked, he found out that Qi Yachuan was working on an overseas construction project. He had been following his company’s projects ever since graduation, only returning home for his annual vacation. It just so happened to be his turn for duty during the New Year this year.

’Ever since his grandparents passed away, the New Year had become an optional holiday for Wu Yun. In his previous life, Gao Qiang had invited him over every year, but Wu Yun hadn’t always accepted.’

’So, once the initial awkwardness and unfamiliarity had faded, I suddenly found this kind of gathering to be incredibly warm. Watching the three children laughing and roughhousing, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s a feeling I haven’t experienced in a very, very long time!’

His gaze fell upon Qi Fei. She was sitting on a small stool, talking animatedly about something. Sensing his gaze, she turned and flashed him a brilliant smile.
