Rebirth: The Blind Heiress Makes A Deal With The Devil
Chapter 87: InformationAaron sat on the sofa beside Isabella, wearing a simple black T-shirt with his inked arms rarely out.
"Pyotr said no because you almost fell into the creek last Tuesday, Finn."
"That was Freya’s fault! She spooked my horse!" Finn yelled back.
"It was not!" Freya’s voice rang out from off-screen before she stepped into view, tossing her hair back. "You tried to jump a log you had no business jumping!"
"Both of you stop yelling at the phone," Aaron commanded, though his tone was easy and relaxed. "Listen to Pyotr. If I hear you caused him any trouble, you won’t be getting on those horses for a month."
"He’s always so bossy," Finn muttered, though a grin split his face. "Isabella! Tell him to be nice!"
Isabella laughed softly, her hand resting on the edge of the table as she leaned toward the sound of the children’s voices. "You know he’s right, Finn. Be careful near the river."
"Traitor," Finn teased.
While they talked, Clara, the maid, stepped quietly into the room carrying a silver tray.
She set down a fresh pot of herbal tea along with a small plate of delicate butter biscuits near Isabella’s hand. Her hands trembled slightly as she adjusted the cup, her eyes flicking nervously toward Aaron.
"Thank you, Clara," Isabella said gently.
Isabella reached out, picked up one of the biscuits, and took a small bite.
The moment the rich, buttery flavor hit her tongue, her stomach gave a violent, terrible lurch.
Isabella gagged softly, bringing her hand to her mouth as her face went completely pale.
Aaron noticed instantly. "Finn, I’m turning this off. Talk to Pyotr."
"Wait, Mish—"
Aaron ended the video call with a quick tap on the screen and turned to Isabella, his arm coming around her shoulders to support her. "Isabella?"
"I’m... I’m sorry," she whispered, her chest heaving as she swallowed back the sudden wave of intense nausea. She pushed the plate of biscuits away. "My stomach..."
Clara froze by the tea cart, her eyes wide with sheer terror. She thought she had done something wrong with the food. She thought she had accidentally poisoned the woman, or that Aaron would figure out she was spying.
"I’m so sorry, ma’am!" Clara cried out, her voice trembling as she bowed her head repeatedly. "I prepared the tea exactly as instructed! I swear I used clean water! Please forgive me!"
Isabella shook her head weaky, offering a pale, reassuring smile toward the maid’s panicked voice. "It’s not you, Clara. Please don’t worry. It’s just... my body betraying me today."
Aaron looked at the trembling maid, his dark eyes cool and calculating. "Clear the tray," he ordered flatly. "And call Dr. Ivan. Tell him to come up to the primary room immediately."
"Y-yes, sir! Right away!" Clara squeaked, quickly grabbing the silver tray and hurrying out of the room.
Ten minutes later, Dr. Ivan, a quiet, middle-aged physician who had traveled with Aaron’s team from Russia, stepped into the private bedroom.
Aaron stood by the window while the doctor checked Isabella’s blood pressure and pulse, asking her quiet questions about her symptoms.
Outside the bedroom door, Clara stood in the dimly lit hallway, holding a fresh basket of folded towels.
She pressed her back flat against the wall, her heart hammering against her ribs as she leaned her head closer to the cracked wooden doorframe.
Inside, Dr. Ivan’s quiet, professional voice drifted through the gap.
"Her blood pressure is slightly low, which is completely normal for the first trimester," Dr. Ivan explained softly to Aaron.
"The morning sickness is escalating as her hormone levels surge. I will prescribe a mild, safe anti-nausea medication suitable for early pregnancy."
Clara gasped silently, her hand flying to her mouth.
’Pregnancy.’
She wasn’t sick. She wasn’t dying. She was pregnant.
Clara took a step back, her mind racing with the realization. This was what Kian Carter needed to know.
Before she could take another step, the bedroom door suddenly swung wide open.
Aaron stood in the doorway, tall, broad, and imposing. His blue eyes dropped down onto Clara, locking onto her with a cold, piercing intensity that made her blood run completely cold.
Clara froze like a deer in headlights, clutching the basket of towels to her chest so hard her knuckles turned white.
The silence stretched for three long, agonizing seconds.
"What are you doing out here?" Aaron asked, his voice low, smooth, and dangerously quiet.
Clara swallowed hard, her knees shaking under her apron. She forced herself to look up, putting on a timid, apologetic expression.
"I... I was just bringing fresh towels for the bathroom, Mr. Kazarov. I didn’t want to interrupt the doctor."
Aaron didn’t say a word. He stared down at her, his eyes scanning her pale face, her trembling hands, and the posture of her body. He observed her in complete silence, the air in the hallway growing thicker by the second.
Finally, Aaron gave a slight, slow nod. "Put them in the linen closet."
"Yes, sir! Immediately!" Clara squeaked, turning on her heel and hurrying down the hall as fast as her feet could carry her.
Aaron watched her go, his eyes narrowing slightly, before he turned back toward the room.
Just as he closed the bedroom door, heavy footsteps echoed up the main staircase.
Niko walked down the corridor, his usual lighthearted smile completely gone. His jaw was clenched in a rigid line, his eyes dark with news.
Aaron stepped back out into the hall, shutting Isabella’s door behind him so she wouldn’t hear. "What is it?"
Niko stopped in front of him, leaning in close so his voice wouldn’t carry. "We have a problem with the eye-drop test."
Aaron’s expression hardened instantly. "What happened?"
"The lab in New Jersey reported an equipment malfunction overnight," Niko said, his tone grim. "A temperature control valve blew in the storage locker. The sample wasn’t destroyed, but because of safety protocols, they’ve put an administrative hold on the final report until the chain-of-custody is revalidated."
Aaron’s eyes turned pitch black, a dangerous, deadly aura settling over his heavy shoulders. "How long?"
"It buys them at least one to two weeks," Niko answered quietly. "And Aaron... our contact inside the facility checked the system logs. The maintenance panel was accessed right before the valve failed. It wasn’t an accident."
