The main office building of the Kingston firm was quiet on the upper floors, but the breakroom near the secondary executive suites was full of hushed voices.

Four employees stood around the marble counter, holding paper coffee cups.

Kian was currently locked in a long strategy meeting down the hall with his senior financial advisors.

"I’m telling you, he looks completely exhausted," a junior logistics manager said, leaning against the counter. "Did you see his face during the morning briefing? He hasn’t slept in days. All of this court mess is tearing him apart."

"Can you blame him?" a mid-level accountant chimed in, shaking her head.

"His own wife turns around in open court and admits she had an affair with Aaron Kazarov. The poor man was blindsided. He’s trying so hard to hold his marriage together, to save her reputation, and she’s out there staying in Kazarov’s private house."

"Poor man?"

The third woman in the room, one of Kian’s floor secretaries, set her mug down with a sharp, heavy clink. She looked toward the door, checking the empty hallway before turning back to the group with her eyes wide.

"What?" the accountant asked, leaning in. "What do you mean by that?"

The secretary lowered her voice to a thick whisper. "Kian Carter is not the innocent saint you all think he is. Everyone keeps feeling sorry for him like he’s some poor, heartbroken husband, but he’s been lying to all of us."

"What are you talking about?" the manager scoffed. "He practically worshiped Isabella. Everyone knows how he carried her around like glass."

"Oh, please," the secretary sneered, crossing her arms tightly. "Isabella was blind and locked up in that house while he was doing whatever he wanted right here under our noses. Have you people never noticed the way Alice looks at him? The way she walks into his office without knocking, staying in there for hours with the blinds drawn shut?"

The room went dead quiet. The other three employees stared at her in shock.

"Are you saying..." the accountant gasped, covering her mouth. "Alice?"

"I don’t just think it. I ’know’ it," the secretary hissed, glancing back at the door again.

"Three months ago, long before Isabella ever went to Russia or said a word about Kazarov, I stayed late to finish the monthly budget reports. Kian’s main door was locked, but the side inner door was cracked open. I went to drop off the paper files on the outer desk, and I heard them."

"Heard them?"

"Fucking," the secretary said flatly, dropping the word like a stone.

"Right against his desk. She was moaning his name, and he wasn’t stopping her. Alice has been sleeping with him for over a year. She acts like she owns this building because he lets her. She treats the junior staff like absolute trash, she humiliated that poor intern in HR last week until the girl cried in the bathroom, and why? Because she knows Kian will cover for her every single time."

The other women exchanged wide-eyed, disbelieving looks. The entire mood in the room shifted instantly.

"So... he was cheating on Isabella first?" the manager murmured, her eyes narrowing.

"With her own nanny’s daughter? The girl who grew up in the same house?"

"It’s sickening," the secretary said, scoffing. "Alice acts so high and mighty, carrying herself around like she’s the future Mrs. Carter, looking down her nose at everyone else. She acts like a sweet little angel whenever Kian is looking, but the second his back is turned, she’s a vicious bitch. She slept her way right to the top, doing it to the woman who was like a sister to her—"

"Is that so?"

The cold, sharp voice sliced through the air like a blade.

The four employees froze. The blood drained completely from the secretary’s face as she slowly turned around.

Alice stood in the doorway of the breakroom. She wore a tailored cream-colored dress, her hair pinned up neatly, but her face was pale with pure, raw fury.

Her lips were pulled back in a tight, terrifying smile, her dark eyes flashing with manic anger.

She had been on her way back from taking notes in Kian’s meeting when she heard her name mentioned through the cracked door. She had heard every single word.

"A-Alice..." the secretary stammered, her hands trembling as she backed up against the edge of the counter. "We... we were just—"

"Talking about me," Alice said softly, taking a slow step into the room. She clicked the heavy wooden door shut behind her, locking it with a quiet ’snap’. "Saying such dirty, disgusting things about your superiors."

"Alice, please, she didn’t mean anything by it," the accountant pleaded, stepping forward with her hands raised. "We were just talking nonsense—"

"Shut your mouth!" Alice shrieked, her voice snapping with sudden, explosive rage.

She lunged forward, ignoring the other two women, and grabbed the secretary by the front of her blouse.

Before the girl could even raise her hands to defend herself, Alice swung her palm back and slammed it across the secretary’s face with a deafening ’CRACK’.

The force of the blow snapped the girl’s head sideways, her paper coffee cup flying out of her hand and splattering dark liquid all over the clean white floor.

"You little bitch!" Alice screamed, her face contorted in vicious anger. She grabbed the girl by her hair, yanked her head back, and slapped her again, harder this time.

’CRACK.’

"Alice! Stop!" the manager yelled, trying to grab Alice’s arm, but Alice shoved her back violently, sending her stumbling into the cabinets.

"Don’t touch me!" Alice spat, her eyes wild. She turned back to the terrified secretary, who was sobbing now, holding her burning, red cheek.

"You think you can spread lies about me? You think you can talk about my life, you useless, low-class trash?"

Alice raised her hand and struck the girl again. ’CRACK.’ Then again. ’CRACK.’

The secretary squeezed her eyes shut, crying out in pain as the slaps rained down on her face, her cheeks swelling rapidly, her lip splitting against her teeth.

Alice wasn’t just mad about the gossip.

Deep down, a dark, black frustration had been eating her alive for weeks.

She had been forced to sit in silence, forced to watch Kian desperately fight to keep his marriage to Isabella, forced to listen to him call another woman his wife while she was left standing in the shadows.

All the anger, all the humiliation she had swallowed, came pouring out into her hands as she beat the girl mercilessly.

"Alice, please! Stop! You’re going to kill her!" the accountant screamed, rushing toward the door and throwing it open to yell for help into the hallway.

Alice didn’t stop. She grabbed the girl’s collar, pulling her up just to slap her again, her breathing heavy and ragged.

"Alice! That is enough!"

A heavy hand clamped down on Alice’s raised wrist, stopping her arm mid-air.

Alice whipped her head around, her eyes wide and dark, ready to scream at whoever had touched her. But the words caught in her throat.

Kian stood there.

He had just come out of his meeting down the hall after hearing the commotion. He looked tired, his suit off, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar.

His dark eyes flicked from Alice’s furious face down to the crying secretary cowering against the counter, her face red, bruised, and bleeding from the corner of her mouth.

A small crowd of employees had gathered in the hallway outside, whispering in shock as they looked through the doorway.

Alice took a sharp breath, suddenly realizing where she was. The red haze of anger cleared slightly, replaced by a sudden spike of tension as she saw the crowd of eyes watching them.

Kian let go of her wrist. He didn’t yell. He didn’t raise his voice. He kept his golden-boy mask firmly in place, though his jaw was clenched tight enough to break a tooth.

He stepped past Alice, extending a hand to the crying secretary. "Are you all right?" he asked, his tone full of soft, gentle concern that made the girl sob harder. He helped her up, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.

He turned to the manager. "Take her down to the medical room on the first floor immediately. Have the company doctor look at her lips and cheeks. Ensure everything is logged."

He turned his head toward the crowd in the hallway, his voice clear and heavy with authority.

"I apologize for this terrible display. Alice has been under extreme personal stress, but this behavior is entirely unacceptable. I will handle her disciplinary action personally."

He gave the staff a solemn, apologetic nod, maintaining his Image as the calm, noble boss trying to fix a tragedy.

Then he grabbed Alice by the elbow, his grip so tight it pinched her skin through her sleeve and pulled her out of the room, dragging her down the private corridor toward his executive office.

The second the heavy doors of his office slammed shut and locked, Kian let go of her arm, throwing her forward.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Kian growled, turning on her with raw, dark irritation in his eyes.

"Are you completely out of your mind? Slapping a staff member in the middle of the breakroom? In front of half the floor?"

Alice stumbled slightly, then straightened up, pulling her sleeves down. Her hair was messy, her chest heaving.

"Don’t you dare raise your voice at me, Kian! Do you have any idea what that little slut was saying about us?"

"I don’t care what she was saying!" Kian barked, pacing across the room. "They’re employees! They gossip! You ignore them! You don’t beat a secretary until her face bleeds in front of witnesses!"

"She told everyone!" Alice shrieked, her voice breaking. "She told the whole floor that we were sleeping together! She called me a whore who slept her way to the top! She said you were cheating on your poor, blind wife with me!"

Kian froze. He stopped pacing and looked at her, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"She was dragging my name through the dirt!" Alice cried, her eyes filling with angry, bitter tears.

"And you expect me to just stand there and take it? While you sit in meetings pretending to be the devastated husband who desperately wants his wife back?"

The real truth finally came out. Alice stepped closer to him, her voice shaking with intense jealousy and rage.

"You’re driving me insane, Kian! I have to sit there every day and watch you fight for Isabella! I have to watch you try to stop this divorce! You promised me that once we got her holdings, we would be together! But you look at her like... like you can’t let her go!"

Kian stared at her. For a terrifying fraction of a second, a dark, cold thought flickered in his head...

’I could just get rid of her. I could end her right now and stop this noise.’
