Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 100: The Fan EvolvesJulian moved through the countryside at a pace that would have seemed impossible even a day earlier, hood drawn low over his unfamiliar, morphed features, the fan spinning steady and lethal at his side with every stray rogue that crossed his path.
He’d lost count of how many he’d cut down since leaving the crumbling territory behind. Dozens, at least, scattered clusters of gray shapes drawn by the same chaos radiating outward from whatever the entity had unleashed, all of them meeting the same fast, efficient end beneath his fan’s spinning edge before he moved on, never slowing, never stopping to fully process the strange, vast power still settling deeper into him with every hour that passed.
"you’re getting better at this," the fox observed, perched steady on his shoulder, watching him cut down another rogue with barely a change in stride. "faster. more precise."
"the fan’s changing too," Julian said, flicking his wrist to send it spinning wide through a cluster of three rogues at once, the blade catching moonlight as it cut clean through all three before curving back to his palm. "did you feel that? it split, just for a second. into more than one."
[Confirmed,] the System said. [This ability appears to scale dynamically with host’s growth and combat necessity. Initial manifestation as a single fan represents only the baseline form. Given sufficient strain or demand, this unit has detected latent potential for expanded functions.]
"expanded how," Julian asked, already testing the thought, reaching for that same instinct that had first summoned the weapon.
The fan in his hand shivered, then split — not into two fans, but into four, each one smaller, each one spinning independently around him in a slow, deliberate orbit, held aloft by nothing but the power humming steady beneath his skin.
Julian stared at them, disbelieving. "okay," he said. "that’s new."
"multiple fans," the fox said, awe plain in its voice. "Julian, that’s incredible."
Another rogue lunged from the shadows, and Julian didn’t even need to think about it — two of the floating fans peeled away on their own, cutting through the creature in a precise, coordinated strike before returning to their steady orbit around him.
"they’re moving on their own," Julian said slowly, testing the connection, feeling the fans respond to intention rather than direct, physical throw. "like they already know what I want them to do before I fully think it."
[This unit theorizes the ability continues learning from host’s combat patterns in real time,] the System said. [The more it is used under genuine pressure, the more refined its applications become.]
Julian kept moving, testing the expanded fans against every fresh wave of rogues that crossed his path, and found, with growing, fierce satisfaction, that each encounter seemed to unlock something new. A rogue lunged close enough that Julian barely had time to react, and instead of throwing the fan, he simply willed it solid and immediate in front of him, the weapon’s shape shifting mid-motion into something closer to a curved blade, catching the creature’s claws and driving it back in one smooth, brutal arc.
"a blade," Julian breathed, staring at the fan-turned-sword in his hand before it shifted back into its original form a moment later. "it can become a blade too."
Further along, cornered briefly by four rogues converging at once, Julian felt the power surge sharp and sudden through his chest, and the fan, still held loose in his grip, released a wide, rippling wave of violet-blue energy that swept outward and knocked every single attacker backward in a single, devastating pulse.
"an energy wave," the fox said, delighted despite the chaos. "Julian, you’re basically inventing a new fighting style in real time."
"I’m just following what feels right," Julian said, breathing hard now, exhilaration and exhaustion both tangling together as he pushed forward through the wreckage-strewn countryside. "it’s like the ability already knows what I need before I do. I just have to trust it."
They pressed on through the night, Julian cutting a fast, relentless path south, guided by nothing but instinct and the fox’s careful, steady direction, until finally, as dawn began to gray the horizon ahead, familiar terrain started to emerge — cultivated farmland, worn travel roads, the unmistakable shape of civilization drawing steadily closer.
"we’re close," the fox said, tails swishing with excitement despite its own visible exhaustion. "Julian, I think that’s the outer boundary of the capital’s territory."
Julian slowed, staring out at the smoke still curling faint on the horizon, the distant, unmistakable signs of a city under siege visible even from this distance. His stomach tightened.
"they’re already fighting something," he said quietly.
"a horde," the fox said grimly. "a big one, from the look of that smoke. I can’t say for certain what’s driving it, but given everything we’ve seen so far, I doubt it’s an ordinary breach."
Julian’s jaw set hard, exhaustion burning away beneath fresh, sharp urgency. "then we don’t slow down," he said, already breaking back into a fast, determined run, the fans spinning loose and ready around him. "we’re finally close enough to actually help."
He crossed the last stretch of open countryside fast, cutting down scattered rogues that had broken off from the main horde’s advance, each kill faster and more efficient than the last as the ability continued refining itself under the strain of continuous combat. A group of fleeing farmers stumbled into his path at one point, terrified and exhausted, and Julian didn’t hesitate, cutting down the three rogues pursuing them before they could register what had happened.
"who—" one of the farmers gasped, staring up at the hooded, unfamiliar figure standing over the fallen creatures.
"just keep moving," Julian said, voice deliberately rough and unfamiliar even to his own ears, the morphed features doing exactly what the System had promised, rendering him a complete stranger even to people who’d once known Julian’s actual face. "get to the capital. it’s safer there than out here."
The farmers didn’t argue, scrambling past him in the direction he’d pointed, and Julian watched them go for a brief moment before turning back toward the smoke-hazed horizon, resolve settling hard and absolute across his exhausted features.
’nobody recognizes me,’ he thought, testing the strange, freeing anonymity of it as he pressed forward again. ’not the villagers. not the rogues drawn to whatever power I’m giving off. not even the people I’d probably recognize myself, if I ran into them right now.’
He reached the outer edge of the capital’s defensive perimeter within the hour, and the scale of the devastation stopped him cold — smoke rising thick from multiple districts, defensive lines stretched thin and exhausted along improvised barricades, Sentinels fighting with the kind of grim, desperate endurance that came only from hours of continuous, unrelenting combat.
"that’s a lot of people fighting for their lives," the fox said quietly.
"yeah," Julian said, jaw tightening, power humming steady and vast beneath his skin, the fans still spinning loose and ready around him. "and I’m done just watching."
He moved toward the nearest breach in the defensive line, where a cluster of exhausted Sentinels fought desperately against a fresh wave of rogues pressing hard against their failing position, and without hesitation, without announcement, threw himself directly into the fight beside them.
The Sentinels startled at the sudden, unfamiliar figure appearing among them, hooded and morphed beyond recognition, fans spinning lethal and precise through the horde pressing against their line.
"who is that," one of them gasped, watching the stranger cut down four rogues in the space of a single breath.
Nobody had an answer. Nobody recognized the man fighting beside them with such devastating, unfamiliar skill, cutting a swift, brutal path through the horde threatening to overwhelm their exhausted defensive line.
Julian didn’t offer his name. Didn’t pause to explain himself. Simply fought, fierce and relentless, buying the exhausted defenders precious time and breathing room they desperately needed, the fans spinning steady and true around him, power settled deep and certain beneath features that belonged, for now, to someone nobody in this entire capital would recognize as the man they’d spent weeks searching for.
