Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 101: A Stranger’s HelpJulian cut through the breach line and found himself moving toward the section where Reid and Jayden held their ground, both of them fighting with the kind of grim, mechanical exhaustion that came only after hours without rest, blades and gold light moving slower now than they should have, strain visible in every labored strike.
He didn’t say a word. He moved instead, reaching for the pulling sensation still familiar despite everything else that had changed about him, and blinked across the distance in an instant, appearing directly behind a cluster of rogues closing fast on Reid’s exposed flank. The fan split into blade-form mid-motion, and Julian cut through three of them in a single, fluid arc before any of them registered his presence at all.
Reid spun at the sudden movement, blade already rising on instinct, and froze for half a second at the sight of the hooded stranger who’d just saved his life without so much as a word of warning.
"who—" Reid started, breathless, but another wave of rogues surged in before he could finish, and Julian was already moving again, blinking past him to intercept the fresh assault, fans spinning wide and lethal through the horde pressing against their failing line.
Jayden caught sight of him a moment later, gold light flickering low and unsteady around his exhausted knuckles as he cut down another attacker. "where did he come from," Jayden shouted over the chaos, watching the stranger cut through the horde with a speed and precision that outstripped anything either of them had energy left to match.
"I don’t know," Reid shouted back, forcing himself back into the fight despite the question burning bright and urgent in his mind. "never seen fighting like that before."
Julian pressed forward, cutting a fast, brutal path through the horde’s densest cluster, teleporting in short, controlled bursts that let him strike from angles the rogues had no way of anticipating, the fans spinning and returning to his hands in smooth, practiced arcs. Every kill bought Reid and Jayden’s exhausted line another precious second of breathing room, the pressure on their failing position easing bit by bit as the stranger’s relentless, unfamiliar assault carved deep into the horde’s numbers.
"he’s carrying half the line by himself," Jayden said, disbelief cutting through his exhaustion as he watched the hooded figure teleport again, appearing behind another cluster of rogues and cutting them down before they could even turn.
Reid didn’t answer, too focused on the fight in front of him to spare more than fragmented attention toward the stranger’s astonishing performance, though something about the fluid, economical way the man moved tugged uncomfortably at the edge of his exhausted mind, familiar in a way he couldn’t place and didn’t have time to properly examine.
The horde surged again, a fresh wave pouring through the breach with terrifying, relentless numbers, and Julian felt the strain of continuous teleportation and combat finally starting to pull at his own reserves, the vast, new power settled beneath his skin still unfamiliar enough that he couldn’t yet fully judge its limits.
’keep going,’ he told himself, cutting down another two rogues with a wide sweep of energy that rippled out from his fans in a violent, glowing wave. ’they need this. don’t stop now.’
Reid staggered slightly, exhaustion finally catching up with him mid-strike, and a rogue’s claws came down toward his exposed side before he could fully recover his stance.
Julian moved without thinking, teleporting directly between them, fan flashing up to intercept the strike a fraction of a second before it would have connected, the impact jarring hard up through his arm as he shoved the creature back and finished it with a fast, brutal counter.
Reid stared at him, breathing hard, something raw and grateful crossing his exhausted features. "thank you," he managed, voice rough. "whoever you are."
Julian didn’t answer, didn’t trust his own voice not to give something away even disguised as it currently was, and simply turned back toward the horde instead, fans already spinning back into ready position.
"we don’t have time to figure out who he is," Jayden shouted, cutting down another attacker, "but whoever sent him, I’m not questioning it right now."
The fight raged on, the three of them falling into an uneasy, unspoken rhythm despite never having fought together before, Julian’s unfamiliar speed and precision covering gaps in Reid and Jayden’s flagging defense, their combined experience and discipline holding the line steady enough for his relentless assault to actually matter.
More rogues poured through the breach, and Julian’s exhaustion sharpened with every passing minute, sweat soaking through his hood despite the cool evening air, breath coming harder now as the strain of continuous power use finally began to show.
[Host,] the System said quietly, cutting through the chaos of battle, [reserves approaching sixty percent. Recommend moderating output.]
’can’t,’ Julian thought back, cutting down another two rogues with a fast, economical strike. ’they need this line held. I’ll manage the reserves.’
[Noted. This unit will continue monitoring.]
The horde’s numbers finally began to thin as the fight wore on, Julian’s relentless, unfamiliar assault combined with Reid and Jayden’s disciplined, coordinated defense grinding down wave after wave until the pressure against their section of the line eased into something almost manageable, the rogues that remained scattered and disorganized rather than the coordinated, overwhelming tide they’d faced only an hour earlier.
Reid finally caught a moment to properly breathe, chest heaving, staring at the hooded stranger who’d single-handedly turned the tide of their collapsing defensive position. "we need to know who you are," he said, voice hard despite the exhaustion. "you just saved dozens of lives. we should at least—"
A fresh cry went up from further down the line, another breach forming fast under renewed pressure, and Julian’s head snapped toward it instantly, the fight demanding his attention before any explanation could properly form.
"can’t stop," Julian said, voice pitched low and rough, deliberately unfamiliar even to his own ears. "more coming."
He was gone before Reid could respond, teleporting fast toward the fresh breach, fans already spinning into position, leaving Reid and Jayden staring after him with matching expressions of stunned, exhausted disbelief.
"did you get a good look at him," Jayden asked, still catching his breath.
"no," Reid said slowly, something uneasy and unplaceable nagging at the back of his exhausted mind as he watched the hooded figure disappear into the chaos further down the line. "couldn’t see his face properly. but something about the way he moves—"
He didn’t finish the thought, another wave of rogues demanding his attention before he could chase the strange, nagging familiarity any further, and the fight swallowed them both back into its brutal, exhausting rhythm, the mysterious stranger’s identity left, for now, an unanswered question buried beneath the desperate, ongoing struggle to simply survive the night.
