Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 130: Far BeyondLogan moved first, closing the distance fast, blade angled in a clean, decisive strike aimed toward Julian’s exposed side.
But Julian simply wasn’t there. The world blinked, the same pulling sensation still achingly familiar despite months of use, and Julian reappeared instantly behind Logan, close enough that his palm connected flat and hard against Logan’s upper back before Logan’s mind had even fully processed the disappearance in front of him.
Logan hit the ground hard, breath knocked clean out of him, momentum carrying him forward across the training floor in an undignified skid before he finally, painfully, came to a stop.
The hall erupted into stunned, disbelieving murmurs.
"did he just—"
"he teleported—"
"that’s not a Guide ability, that’s not anything I’ve ever seen a Guide manifest—"
Logan pushed himself up slowly, coughing, disbelief plain across his exhausted features as he turned to find Julian standing exactly where he’d vanished a moment before he struck, fan still held loose and steady at his side, expression as calm and unreadable as it had been before the fight even began.
"you’re not even using the weapon," Logan managed, voice rough, forcing himself back into ready stance despite the fresh ache blooming across his back.
"didn’t need to," Julian said simply.
The murmurs in the crowd sharpened, spreading fast now, disbelief tangling with something closer to genuine unease.
"how is that even possible," someone near the front breathed. "he’s a Guide. Guides don’t teleport. Guides don’t move like that."
"I’ve never seen a Sentinel move that fast either," another voice added, quieter, more uncertain now. "not even the SSS-Rank ones."
"what is he," a third voice murmured, something almost fearful threading beneath the curiosity now.
Reid’s jaw tightened, watching the exchange with careful, focused attention, old fragments of memory stirring uneasy at the edges of his mind — the hooded stranger at the eastern breach, the impossible speed, the fan spinning and returning true no matter how far it was thrown. He’d witnessed all of it firsthand during the capital’s assault, had fought alongside it without fully understanding what he was seeing at the time. Watching it now, in the controlled, deliberate context of a training hall rather than desperate battlefield chaos, the scale of it landed with fresh, uncomfortable weight.
"he’s held back with us," Reid murmured to Jayden, voice low. "every single time we’ve sparred with him since he woke up. I thought that was just him easing back into training after the coma."
"maybe it was," Jayden said, equally quiet, equally unsettled. "or maybe he’s just now decided this particular fight actually calls for showing what he’s really capable of."
Logan straightened fully, blade steady despite the visible strain now evident in his stance, and studied Julian with something harder and more determined settling behind his exhausted features. "that’s fine," he said, voice firm despite the obvious pain still radiating through his back. "I didn’t actually expect this to be easy."
"good," Julian said, voice still mild, still giving nothing away. "because I’m not planning on making it easy."
Logan surged forward again, faster this time, forcing himself to account for the possibility of another sudden disappearance, eyes tracking every subtle shift in Julian’s stance for any warning sign before the next teleport could catch him off guard.
Julian blinked out again regardless, and this time Logan spun immediately, blade already rising on instinct, catching the edge of Julian’s reappearing strike just barely in time, steel meeting the flat of the fan with a sharp, ringing clash that echoed through the hushed hall.
"better," Julian said, something that might have been approval threading faint through the calm.
Logan didn’t waste breath answering, pressing the advantage while he had it, driving a fast combination of strikes that Julian deflected with easy, unhurried precision, never once stepping back further than necessary, conserving motion with the same brutal economy that had carved through an entire horde weeks earlier.
The crowd watched in tense, disbelieving silence, murmurs finally quieting into something closer to genuine awe as the fight continued, Logan pushing himself harder with every exchange, refusing to let the earlier humiliation slow his effort even as Julian’s calm, effortless defense made clear exactly how vast the gap between them truly was.
"he’s not even trying properly," someone whispered near the back, voice hushed with disbelief. "look at him. he’s barely moving beyond what’s necessary."
"maybe that’s the whole test," another voice murmured back. "not whether Logan can win. whether he keeps fighting even knowing he can’t."
Logan’s blade caught against the fan again, and this time Julian didn’t simply deflect, twisting the motion instead to redirect Logan’s own momentum, sending him stumbling forward off balance. Julian could have ended it there, easily, the opening wide and obvious.
He didn’t take it. Instead, he stepped back, giving Logan room to recover, watching with the same calm, patient stillness as Logan caught himself, breathing hard, sweat soaking through his training clothes now.
"why’d you back off," Logan managed between breaths. "you had me."
"I know," Julian said simply, offering no further explanation.
Logan studied him a moment, something uncertain and searching crossing his exhausted expression before he simply nodded, resetting his stance, gathering himself for another exchange despite the mounting exhaustion clearly dragging at his limbs now.
The whispered speculation in the crowd had shifted entirely by this point, the earlier curious gossip about Mika and rumored bonds forgotten completely in the face of what they were actually witnessing — something far beyond ordinary Guide capability unfolding in front of them, power and speed that outstripped even the Empire’s most decorated Sentinels, wielded with a control and restraint that felt, somehow, more unsettling than if Julian had simply overwhelmed Logan outright.
"what is he," the same voice from earlier murmured again, quieter now, tinged with something closer to reverent unease. "what exactly did that entity make him into."
Nobody had an answer, the crowd’s attention fully, completely fixed now on the unfolding fight, watching Logan push himself past every reasonable limit, refusing to yield despite the overwhelming gap in power separating him from the calm, unreadable man standing patient and controlled across from him.
