Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 131: Think AgainLogan moved again, faster this time, pouring everything he had left into the strike, but Julian was already gone before the blade came close enough to matter.
He appeared to Logan’s left. Then his right. Then behind him, then in front of him again, the disappearances and reappearances happening so fast and so continuously that Logan’s exhausted senses simply couldn’t track them properly anymore, his blade cutting through empty air over and over as Julian’s afterimages seemed to flicker in every direction at once, calm and untouched at the center of a storm Logan had no way of properly navigating.
"did you think," Julian’s voice cut through the chaos, calm and even despite the impossible speed still carrying him around the training floor, "I would forgive you that easily?"
Logan spun, blade raised, breathing ragged, searching desperately for any sign of where Julian might reappear next. Every direction he turned, Julian was already gone from it, another flicker of violet-gold light marking his passage somewhere else entirely, the sheer disorientation of it wearing down Logan’s focus faster than any physical exhaustion could have managed alone.
"think again," Julian said, and this time Logan felt the impact before he even registered movement, a controlled strike catching him square across the shoulder and sending him staggering hard, blade nearly slipping from his exhausted grip entirely.
The hall had gone utterly, disbelievingly silent, every murmur and whisper swallowed whole by the sheer, overwhelming spectacle unfolding in front of them. Along the walls, several Sentinels had gone pale, watching speed and precision that outstripped anything they’d ever witnessed even from the Empire’s most decorated fighters, wielded by a man half of them had spent weeks quietly dismissing as simply a talented Guide who’d gotten lucky.
Logan caught himself, barely, forcing his stance back into something resembling readiness despite his body screaming with exhaustion, sweat soaking clean through his training clothes now, breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. His arms trembled from the effort of holding his blade steady, muscles burning from strikes that had connected with nothing but empty air far more often than they’d found their target.
"you’re the second-strongest SSS-Rank Sentinel this Empire has," Julian said, voice still calm, still carrying no visible strain despite the relentless speed he’d been maintaining, appearing now several feet to Logan’s right, fan resting loose and unhurried at his side. "and you can’t even take down a single ex-fiancé Guide."
Something in the words landed harder than any physical strike could have, humiliation and old, aching shame crashing through Logan’s exhaustion, and for one brief, dangerous moment his focus wavered entirely, eyes flickering downward before he forced them back up, jaw tight.
Julian was on him again before he could recover, another controlled strike catching his other shoulder, sending him down hard onto one knee, blade finally slipping loose from his weakened grip to clatter uselessly against the training floor.
Logan knelt there, chest heaving, humiliation and exhaustion tangling together in his chest as he stared up at Julian’s calm, composed face, still giving away absolutely nothing despite everything that had just happened. The crowd’s silence pressed down heavy around him, hundreds of eyes watching his defeat unfold in front of the very people whose respect he’d spent weeks quietly trying to rebuild.
"get up," Julian said, voice flat.
Logan’s jaw tightened, some old, stubborn resolve refusing to fully break even under the crushing weight of his own visible defeat. "I’m not done," he said, forcing himself back onto unsteady legs, reaching for his fallen blade with trembling, exhausted fingers, the effort alone costing him visibly.
"you’re barely standing," Julian observed, though something in his tone shifted slightly, harder to read now than the flat, unbothered assessment from moments earlier.
"I don’t care," Logan said, voice cracking with exhaustion but steady with resolve. "you said prove it. not talk about it. prove it. I’m not stopping just because you’re stronger than I expected."
Something flickered again behind Julian’s calm expression, brief and gone before the watching crowd could properly parse it.
"stronger than you expected," Julian repeated slowly, something colder cutting beneath the words now. "did you think this would be easy, Logan. did you think a little groveling beside an unconscious bed for six weeks would be enough to erase what you did in that hall, in front of the entire academy, the day you decided I wasn’t worth standing beside?"
"no," Logan said, breathing hard, blade raised despite his trembling grip. "I never thought that. I know it’s not enough. that’s why I’m still standing here, even now, even losing this badly."
The hall remained utterly silent, every eye fixed on the exchange, the earlier murmured speculation about power and ability entirely forgotten now in the face of something rawer, more personal, unfolding in front of them. Near the front, Reid’s arms had uncrossed, hands hanging tense at his sides, watching with an expression caught somewhere between sympathy and grim understanding.
"you humiliated me," Julian said, voice still calm but carrying something sharper now, something that finally, properly cracked through the careful, unreadable composure he’d maintained the entire fight. "in front of everyone. called me pathetic. weak. said I wasn’t worthy of standing beside you, and you said it easily, Logan, like it cost you nothing at all to throw me away."
"I know," Logan said, voice raw now, exhaustion and old, aching guilt both bleeding through equally. "I know exactly what I did. and I’ll spend as long as it takes proving I understand exactly how badly I failed you, if that’s what it takes."
Julian studied him for a long, silent moment, something complicated and difficult finally, fully visible behind his composed exterior for the first time since the fight began, the crowd straining forward almost imperceptibly, sensing the shift even if they couldn’t name it.
"then keep fighting," Julian said quietly. "because that’s what I actually want to see. not whether you can beat me. you can’t. we both know that now, if you didn’t already. I want to see whether you keep showing up anyway, even knowing you’re going to lose, because you actually mean what you’ve been saying instead of just performing regret you think sounds good."
Logan’s grip tightened on his blade, something fierce and resolute settling behind his exhausted eyes despite the pain and humiliation still radiating through every limb. He forced himself fully upright, legs shaking, breath ragged, but his stance settling, however unsteadily, back into something resembling readiness.
"then I’m not stopping," he said, voice steady now despite everything. "not until you tell me to."
He lunged forward one final time, exhausted and outmatched and utterly, stubbornly refusing to yield, and Julian met the strike with the same calm, effortless control as every exchange before it, deflecting the blade with barely a fraction of visible effort. But this time, instead of another sharp counter, he simply held the position a beat longer than necessary, watching Logan’s raw, unguarded determination up close.
The crowd held its breath, uncertain what they were witnessing now, the fight’s rhythm shifting into something quieter, more deliberate, though no less charged than the violent, disorienting speed that had come before it.
"again," Julian said, voice softer now, though still giving nothing decisive away.
Logan didn’t hesitate, gathering what little strength remained in his exhausted body and pressing forward once more, and Julian, watching him with an expression the entire hall strained uselessly to read, met the strike again, and again, and again, the fight settling into something that no longer resembled a lesson in humiliation, but rather a slow, grueling test of whether Logan’s resolve would outlast his own exhausted body — a question, it seemed, that even Julian himself hadn’t yet fully decided the answer to.
