A smile crept onto Lucius’s face... He had been waiting for them to reach this exact conclusion.
"We sell to the desperate," Lucius declared quietly. "We look past the border. The Alemanni confederation dominates the frontier, but they border dozens of smaller independent tribes deeper within the black forests of Germania... tribes that are being oppressed, raided, and driven to the brink of extinction by Alaric’s masters."
Lucius traced a wide circle deep in the uncharted territories of the north. "If we can bypass the border blockades and supply our steel to the underdog tribes, we will arm the resistance."
"Do you see the beauty of it?" Lucius asked. "If the smaller tribes suddenly possess weapons that can shear through Alemanni iron, the northern forests will erupt into a civil war. The Alemanni will be consumed by internal rebellions. They will bleed each other dry, leaving the Roman border in a state of peace."
Lucius tapped the table for emphasis. "The Roman legions will grow lazy and distracted, the barbarian threat will neutralize itself, and we buy ourselves years of security to expand the estate."
The sheer brilliance of the war astounded Cassius, leaving him speechless.
It was a strategy worthy of the greatest Roman senators, devised by a youth of twenty!
"It is a beautiful theory, Dominus," Valerius noted, crossing his arms. "But how do we execute it? To reach the deeper tribes, our caravans would have to cross the Rhine, evade the Roman patrols, and then somehow navigate hundreds of miles of uncharted forest controlled by the Alemanni. My men do not know those woods. Any Roman caught in that territory is tortured and strung up from the branches."
Valerius shook his head. "We don’t know the safe paths, we don’t know the dialects, and we certainly don’t know which deep-forest chieftains can actually afford to pay us in gold."
Silence descended upon the study. The grand strategy had hit a seemingly impenetrable wall.
Lucius frowned, staring at the map. He could invent a blast furnace, but he could not invent a map of unconquered Germania.
Just as the brilliant plan seemed doomed to remain a fantasy, Valerius’s eyes suddenly widened.
The veteran slowly lowered his arms.
"Wait," Valerius murmured, looking up from the parchment. "I don’t know the deep forest paths. And no Roman merchant knows the internal politics of the northern tribes."
Valerius let out a chuckle. "But we have a man who does."
Lucius’s head snapped up. "Who?"
"Your drill master. Wulfric," Valerius grinned. "Did you forget his history? Before Valerius bought him in chains, Wulfric was a war-chief for a mid-forest tribe. The Alemanni slaughtered his family and burned his villages to the ground to consolidate their power. He was sold to the border merchants as a humiliated trophy."
Cassius gasped, instantly catching on. "He possesses a blood-sworn hatred for the Alemanni confederation."
"Exactly!" Valerius confirmed, his voice rising. "He knows the hidden river crossings. He knows the hunting trails that bypass the Alemanni strongholds. And more importantly, he knows exactly which surviving chieftains in the deep woods have the gold to pay for our steel and the warriors to wield it!"
Lucius felt a surge of excitement through his veins.
The missing piece of the puzzle had been living in their barracks this entire time, screaming at the new recruits!
