Reborn In 3rd Century Rome with Future Industry
Chapter 31: Shadow AllianceLess than twenty minutes after Valerius had departed the study, the cedar doors groaned open.
Wulfric had to turn sideways and duck his blonde head to clear the Roman doorframe.
The Germanic war-chief was still breathing heavily from the training yard. He struck his fist against his chest in a sharp salute.
"You summoned me, Dominus?" Wulfric asked.
Lucius gestured for the giant to step closer to the map spread across the desk. "Wulfric, I need a direct answer. Do you possess a method to smuggle my steel deep into the Silva Nigra? To arm the tribes resisting the Alemanni confederation, without the border merchants ever knowing?"
Wulfric was taken aback. In the Roman world, slaves were treated as beasts of burden. They were never consulted on matters of warfare. But Wulfric was a seasoned killer, and he quickly recognized the scale of the young patrician’s ambition.
A savage joy suddenly ignited in the barbarian’s eyes.
"I can do exactly that, Dominus," Wulfric replied. "I still have blood-brothers hiding in the deep bogs and the eastern crags. The Chatti, the remnants of the Cherusci. The Alemanni are trying to exterminate them to consolidate their grip on the frontier."
Wulfric leaned over the map, his finger tracing paths no Roman cartographer had ever seen. "They know they cannot win an open war. The Alemanni possess thousands of warriors and forges. But my brothers have a blood-feud that transcends death. They will fight from the shadows, ambush the supply lines, and poison the wells until they are wiped out."
Lucius was satisfied with the intelligence. He tapped the desk. "Our forge will soon produce more steel than my private guard can consume. I want your contacts in the deep woods to purchase our excess weaponry. Send word to them immediately. Let them know the Forge Master of Gaul is offering them the fangs they need to bite back."
Wulfric’s smile widened, but it was quickly tempered by a grim reality.
He looked at Lucius with a somber expression. "They will buy your steel, Dominus. They will sell their own teeth for it. But you must understand... even if their blades do not shatter, they simply lack the manpower. Giving them your swords will allow them to butcher thousands of Alemanni, but it will only delay their extinction."
Lucius met the giant’s gaze without a shred of pity.
He appreciated that Wulfric possessed the tactical mind to see the truth, but he also needed the man to understand where his loyalties now lay.
"I am aware," Lucius said. "But while the Alemanni are bleeding out in the deep forests, trying to put down a resistance armed with indestructible steel, they will be far too busy dying in their own backyard."
Wulfric nodded. He did not care about the safety of Rome, but he agreed with the young master’s calculus.
The strong consumed the weak, and if his people had to die, they would die dragging their hated oppressors down into the mud with them...
