Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 181: A spy’s guide to information gathering (4)

Xion arrived in front of an incredibly long tower-like structure that almost seemed to be reaching the clouds.

After briefly catching his breath, he whispered.

"Kiryuzor, are you sure that this is the place? Because this looks like the research tower of the academy city. What would the immortal boy be doing here? He’s a cadet, not a researcher."

The dragon’s deep voice rang in his mind soon after.

[My senses are acting strange for some unknown reason, leading me in two completely different directions, but I am certain that this is the place.]

Xion sighed and sat on a nearby bench by the side of the road leading to the tower.

’I guess I can only wait.’

It was not as though he could find the immortal boy on his own. Trusting Kiryuzor was the right call here.

People continued to enter and exit the tower as Xion waited patiently.

And then...

[This is the one. I am certain.]

Xion looked at the individual who was exiting the tower, wearing a dark cloak that covered them from head to toe. His face wasn’t visible either.

’So that’s the immortal boy, huh? From the nature of his presence, he looks to be Phase Two.’

The immortal boy was supposed to be a cadet, just like Xion and the others. Yet not once had anyone spotted him attending any of the lectures. More than that, nobody had spotted him in the exams and the ranking duels either.

Xion began following the cloaked figure. But unlike the previous two times, he was now much more careful and maintained a lot more distance.

The cloaked figure entered an unknown building, and Xion followed after them, trying his best not to lose sight of the cloaked figure.

’...Hm?’

The building they entered was completely empty and looked only recently made. The cloaked figure removed the carpet on the floor, revealing a large trapdoor. Opening it, they entered inside.

After waiting for a few moments, Xion approached the trapdoor and opened it.

’An underground area? There was something like that in the academy city?’

He swiftly entered through the trapdoor, only to find himself in a dimly lit tunnel. There were illumination magitool torches attached to the walls at intervals, being the only source of light.

The tunnel itself seemed to have been built quite a while ago and was large enough to house a huge crowd.

A few meters ahead, Xion spotted the cloaked figure walking. He carefully followed them for a while, only to find them approach a tiny house that had a strange structure.

’So this is where he lives?’

If it were the others, Xion would’ve attacked them by now instead of dragging things out, but he waited patiently and observed the cloaked figure, trying to gain information.

After a while, he saw the cloaked figure come out of the house and walk towards the direction of the trapdoor where they had entered from.

’This is my chance!’

He tossed the dull grey coin in his hand.

Xion drew his shortswords. And unlike before, he coated them with a purplish-black energy that almost looked alive.

Channeling mana into his feet, he practically launched himself toward the cloaked figure, closing the distance in an instant.

The wind whistled as the two blades cut through the air. In the next moment, the blades cleaved the cloaked figure’s head off. But just as the head separated itself from the body, it was as though the magnetic force pulled it back, attaching it to the neck once again.

’As expected!’

The wound was gone moments later, and the neck was attached back perfectly, as though it had never been chopped off in the first place.

But after Xion’s attack, the cloak was removed, revealing the figure’s face. It was a boy Xion’s age with short reddish-brown hair swept messily to the side and amethyst eyes.

The boy looked confused, as if he had yet to grasp what had just happened.

Xion adjusted his stance.

’Let’s see how many blows he can recover from.’

Xion raised both blades as he sharpened his gaze. But just as he was about to strike again...

"W-Wait! P-Please don’t hurt me! I surrender!!"

The boy suddenly raised his hands above his head as if showing that he wouldn’t resist. His eyes were shaking with fear.

’Huh?’

Xion slowly lowered his blades, dumbfounded.

"What are you talking about? What surrender? I am attacking you, not abducting you."

The boy took a submissive stance and answered in a shaking voice.

"I-I can’t die, so it’s useless t-to attack me. So you must be here to abduct me. I-I won’t resist, I promise, so please don’t attack."

Xion furrowed his brows.

’This is the immortal? But he looks so... pathetic.’

The shaking eyes, trembling gaze, submissive attitude. One would think someone possessing immortality would act a bit braver.

Xion sighed and sheathed his shortswords.

"I just chopped off your head, but you didn’t die, which means that you must be the immortal boy everyone talks about. Sorry, you were dressed suspiciously, so I thought you were a spy sent by the kingdom. That is why I followed and attacked you."

The boy’s eyes stopped shaking as he slowly lowered his hands.

"...So it was all a misunderstanding?"

Xion readily nodded with an amicable smile.

"Indeed, it was all a misunderstanding."

But internally, he was frowning.

’What a naive brat. One would think someone who grew up in a slum wouldn’t trust people so easily.’

"So, now that the misunderstanding has been cleared," His smile deepened. "How about we talk a bit? Just like everyone else, I am rather curious about you."

The boy readily nodded.

"Oh, why not? I’d love to talk."

Xion glanced at the building the boy had entered a while ago.

"Is that your house? Ah, I totally forgot to ask your name. My name is Xion, by the way. I became a cadet of this academy just a few weeks ago, much like you."

"Yes, that’s my house." The boy nodded. "I live here for safety reasons. According to the commander, there are a lot of people who are after me because of my power, so I have to live in a place with sufficient security. As for my name, it’s Robin. Nice to meet you, Xion."

Xion furrowed his brow.

"Wait, if this place is supposedly sufficiently secure, then how was I able to enter so easily? I don’t see anyone besides you and me either."

’If anything, this place is even worse than those dorms. I can just kidnap him, and nobody would even know.’

The boy sighed.

"I don’t really know either, to be honest. They just told me that they will be able to respond more quickly if something happens here."

"I see..."

His encounter with the imperial prince, as well as the time when he summoned Kiryuzor at the academy city’s entrance, came to his mind. Both of those times, he was struck down by a bolt of lightning that came without any warning.

’I am assuming that the ’quicker response’ has to do with that lightning. Maybe that is why there are no people here.’

It could be that Xion was currently being monitored.

After that, Xion talked a lot with the immortal boy and came to know a lot of information. The boy foolishly revealed important information even when Xion never asked for it.

Soon, Xion exited the underground tunnel and returned to the surface.

Walking away, he sighed.

’I have solid doubts whether that naive kid can become a catalyst for Caelwyn’s demise. Hell, his foolish head might become a catalyst for his own demise.’

And just like that, Xion’s information-gathering mission came to a temporary end.
