Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth
Chapter 180: A spy’s guide to information gathering (3)His third target was a bit harder to find since she had no fixed routine from what he was able to gather.
But after a bit of searching, he finally found her eating street food at a stall in a crowded area. The way she stuffed her face made it seem as though she hadn’t eaten anything in days.
’I don’t see anyone with her.’
From what he had been able to gather about Evangeline Florivelle, she was the most normal of them all. Born into the Florivelle Count family—a typical regional noble house—she grew up like a normal girl, showing nothing exceptional.
But that all changed when she reached the Origin Phase. She awakened four elemental affinities, and all four of them were major ones.
After that point, the world started treating her as the most gifted girl in the empire, and it was said that she was comparable to Adrian Caelis Ravenshade.
’Apparently, a lot of noble houses and factions fought to bring her to their side, but House Ravenshade ended up winning in the end, which is why she is engaged to the first son of House Ravenshade.’
As the girl finally finished eating, she started walking away, and Xion began following her, trying to find an opportunity.
But it didn’t go as planned.
The girl went to different buildings, possibly to attend lectures. After that, she walked around the academy city as if sightseeing.
’Ugh, how long is she going to do this? I’m getting bored at this point. Maybe I should’ve started with the immortal boy instead.’
But after a long while, Xion finally found an opportunity.
The girl began looking around, as if searching for something. And in her search, she entered an empty alley with narrow streets.
’This is my chance!’
He tossed the dull grey coin in his hand.
While hiding behind a wall, Xion drew his shortswords and lunged at the girl from behind with his blades raised, as if to strike her head from above.
As if sensing him, the girl hurriedly turned around, and her eyes widened in shock as she saw him. But in that narrow alley, she had no space to dodge his incoming attack.
But...
⪡"Stop! Don’t move!!!"⪢
Xion suddenly froze with his blades still raised.
’...What...?’
His body literally froze. He couldn’t move it no matter how hard he tried. It was as though he had lost control over his own body.
His eyes slowly became moist as he wasn’t even able to blink.
’What just happened?’
"Huff... Huff..."
The girl panted heavily while pressing her hand tightly against her chest. Her eyes shook as he looked at him. It was as though she were having some sort of panic attack.
As Xion remained frozen, the girl’s breathing slowly stabilized. However, she looked to be in a somewhat dazed state.
Suddenly, a crown made of water materialized above her head. In the next moment, hundreds of tiny water droplets floated in the air. Those droplets soon converged in her hand and turned into a small knife made entirely of water.
With that water knife in her hand, the girl walked towards the frozen Xion.
But just as she came to stand in front of him, she paused. The dazed look on her face slowly cleared, bringing clarity back in her eyes. She glanced at the water knife in her hand with a guilty expression, and it soon dissipated into wisps of mana.
She turned her gaze back to Xion with an apologetic look on her face.
"Sorry about that. It’s just that I have some past trauma related to assassins, so I might’ve overreacted. Even if you are someone who tried to kill me, I can’t just kill you in return. I don’t know why you just tried to attack me, but you must’ve had your reasons."
She looked around.
"I should restrain you and bring you to the academy. They will deal with you accordingly."
But just then, the girl suddenly noticed something falling and hurriedly caught it. She brought the object closer to her face to observe.
"Hm? A grey coin? Where did this come from? And somehow, the color looks kinda familiar..."

While hiding behind a wall, Xion glanced at the girl one last time before he turned around.
As he walked through the quiet alley, there was a frown on his face.
’Just what was that...?’
He was certain that his body froze after the girl shouted at him to stop and not move.
’A mental attack?’
But his mind was completely free, even allowing him to think. It was just that his body refused to listen to him, as though some external force had hijacked it. He had never even heard of such an ability.
"Hmm... looks like the girl isn’t simple either."
She might be the most dangerous of the three.
Xion’s mind was swirling with thoughts. Thoughts like the limits of her ability, her weaknesses, her other possibly hidden abilities.
After a few moments of contemplation, he shook away his thoughts.
’I guess it’s time to move on to the last target of the day.’
The most important individual, the immortal boy. Known as the Second Immortal.
Xion actually hadn’t managed to gather much information about the immortal boy. What he had been able to gather were bits and pieces from the rumors.
’According to the rumors, the boy used to live in the slums of a viscount’s territory.’
The state of that noble’s territory was especially bad. After people were fed up, they started to protest and revolt against the viscount. And to stop those protests, the viscount did what most nobles usually do.
He sent his private soldiers to kill the protestors.
The revolt had been quite large-scale, which was why the mass slaughter had also been large-scale. And apparently, the immortal boy was beheaded by one of the soldiers, and that was the moment he awakened immortality.
’Bu of course, those are just rumors with no real evidence.’
After the news spread, the emperor sent his imperial knights to the viscount’s territory. The boy was adopted by an imperial knight commander, the viscount was hanged in the town square of his own territory, and a new viscount took his place from the branch family.
As he walked, Xion whispered.
"Kiryuzor, have you found him yet?"
Moments later, a heavy voice rang in his mind.
[Wait a bit, human. Most of my abilities are restricted, and some of them are simply unusable because you don’t have enough mana.]
Indeed. Kiryuzor was a Rank Four Eternarch, which meant that it took a lot of mana to summon and use him.
Xion simply hadn’t been able to summon him until he reached Phase Three. And even after that, what Xion had become able to summon after depleting all of his Phase Three mana reserves was an extremely scaled-down version of Kiryuzor who had no abilities whatsoever. The only thing the dragon had for itself was its body.
Still, Kiryuzor could use some of his powers without being summoned by using his connection with Xion.
According to him, Kiryuzor could sense traces of immortality since he had encountered the immortal when he was alive thousands of years ago.
After a while, the deep voice rang in Xion’s head once again.
[Human, I believe I have succeeded in locating the current bearer of Immortality.]
