Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 179: A spy’s guide to information gathering (2)

"By the way, my prince, what do you think of Adrian Caelis Ravenshade?"

The prince narrowed his eyes slightly.

"What exactly do you mean by that?"

"Oh, well..." Xion deepened his amicable smile. "Ever since I entered the academy city, I’ve heard the comparison of your intellects. I just wanted to know your thoughts on that. Or... am I overstepping?"

The prince looked ahead thoughtfully.

"...I have understood enough about the world not to trust ‌rumors. Still, if those rumors are indeed true, then I am rather intrigued by the Ravenshade heir."

’Huh? Ravenshade heir?’

"What do you mean by ’heir,’ my prince?" He furrowed his brow. "As far as I know, he hasn’t yet been declared heir by Duke Ravenshade. Moreover, he has a younger brother, and there isn’t much age difference between them, so I wouldn’t call him ’heir.’ So..."

Looking ahead, the imperial prince shook his head.

"I’m afraid you’re wrong. Well, considering that you are a commoner, it’s not surprising that you don’t know this. The second son of House Ravenshade can’t compare against his younger brother. So even if he hasn’t been made heir, he certainly will become one."

’I see...’

"By the way," the prince turned to him. "How much further do we need to go?"

Xion looked around. The area was almost empty. There were a few older cadets here and there, but he couldn’t find any guards.

’This place should be good enough.’

He tossed the dull grey coin he had been playing with until now.

Xion offered the prince a curt bow.

"We don’t need to go any further, my prince..."

Then, without warning, he suddenly drew his shortswords and lunged at the prince before he could react.

The prince’s eyes widened as both blades covered in mana came toward him from two sides, not allowing him to dodge.

And the next moment, the prince’s body was cleaved in two, sliced through the middle.

As the sliced body fell to the ground, a pool of crimson slowly began to form beneath his feet. Xion stared at the prince’s corpse in confusion.

"Seriously? Just like that?"

’I thought there would be more to him since he was literally the imperial prince.’

To think that was all it took to kill him. Xion couldn’t believe it even though he was the one who had done it. Crouching down, he checked the prince’s pulse and heartbeat just in case he was somehow still alive.

But after confirming that the prince really was dead, Xion sighed in disappointment and turned around.

’What a waste. I didn’t even learn any new information from this.’

No, maybe that wasn’t true. He had indeed learned something from this. He came to know how easy it was to kill the imperial prince.

But as he was walking away, a voice came from behind, making him freeze.

"I see, so you are some sort of assassin. Were you sent by one of the ancient nobles?"

The voice belonged to the prince he had just killed moments ago.

As he slowly turned around, he saw the prince standing in the middle of the pool of blood, calmly fixing the sleeves of his uniform. He looked perfectly fine, as though his body had never been divided in two, even though his clothes that had been cut remained that way.

’What the hell? I’m damn sure I confirmed that he was dead, so how?’

Slowly, the prince’s ruby-colored eyes turned to him as he spoke in a calm tone.

"So? Now that you have committed a crime, I’m afraid you are going to be punished. I would suggest that you come quietly without resistance. Oh, and I recommend that you don’t try anything foolish."

Xion tensed his muscles and placed his hand on the hilt of his shortswords.

’I should try one again. This time, I am going to watch what happened.’

He drew his blades and rushed forward to close the distance. But suddenly, a bolt of lightning fell from the sky without any warning and struck him, turning him into a charred black corpse.

The prince walked closer and observed the smoke rising from his half-burnt corpse.

"I warned you not to try anything foolish, didn’t I? This is not some lawless area. Moreover..."

The prince turned his gaze to the sky.

"You acted late, Head Scholar. I hope you are ready to be punished for your negligence."

Just then, a dull grey coin fell on the puddle of blood on the ground.

Xion offered the prince a curt bow.

"We don’t need to go any further, my prince... Actually, I do not know the meeting location either. I am just an outsider they contacted to bring you. They told me to wait in this area with you, and a guide will soon come and take us to the meeting place."

"Is that so...?" The prince eyed him briefly, then nodded. "Then I will wait for that person with you."

But no matter how long they waited, nobody came. Well, that was no surprise since Xion had made everything up.

As they continued waiting in silence, the prince’s brows slowly furrowed.

’This should be the right time.’

Xion let out a heavy sigh.

"My prince, we have waited for so long, yet nobody has come yet. I don’t think it is right for them to make you wait like this. Forgive me; return to where you were going before I met you. I will continue to wait here, and if someone comes, I will bring them to you."

"Hmm..." The prince narrowed his eyes. "Whoever is supposedly offering me a deal hasn’t made a good enough impression. Either they don’t know manners and etiquette, or they are ignorant of their place. You should return as well. I have no interest in meeting them anymore."

Xion lowered his head politely.

"I understand, my prince."

The prince slowly walked away, soon disappearing into the distance. After scanning the area to confirm that he wasn’t being watched, Xion frowned.

’The prince can come back to life? Wait, is he the immortal? No, that wouldn’t make sense...’

What Xion was certain of was that he had confirmed that the prince had died.

Well, he was literally sliced in half, so it would’ve been strange for the boy to have remained alive. Still, Xion had seen plenty of strange things in life, and so he had checked, just in case.

’An Origin ability, perhaps?’

What was clear was that it certainly wasn’t immortality. Because from what he knew, immortality simply didn’t let the bearer die instead of reviving them after death.

Was this the reason Schniel Solthar Valcarion’s name was on that list?

"No, maybe I’m jumping to conclusions..."

He sighed.

’It’s so frustrating. Unlike with that Ravenshade boy, I actually got something out of the attempt on the imperial prince. But I just don’t know what that something is... is it an Origin ability? Or...

Xion glanced at the dull grey coin in his hand.

’Well, I should think about this some other time.’

Because for now, he had two more targets.

Evangeline Florivelle and... the boy who possesses immortality.

After much effort, he had finally found him.

Turning around, Xion began walking towards the destination where he would find his next target.
