Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth
Chapter 178: A spy’s guide to information gathering (1)’Let’s do this.’
It had been a few days, and Xion had gathered sufficient information about the three names that were mentioned in the note as well as the immortal boy.
And today, he was going to gather more information about their abilities through more direct means.
Standing near the entrance of a cylindrical building with a dome-like structure, he waited for his first target.
As of right now, Xion had not found a single clue related to the infiltrator from Nebulous Veil. For now, he was more focused on finding out more about Nebulous Veil since he barely knew anything about them.
Just then, he saw his target exit the building. It was a boy with deep jet-black hair falling messily over his forehead, almost covering his piercing grey eyes. With a calm expression, the boy walked at an unhurried pace.
Xion tried to blend with the other cadets as he began following the boy.
’Adrian Caelis Ravenshade. Born as the first son of House Ravenshade. There are a lot of strange details about him.’
From what Xion had learned over these days, the boy hadn’t appeared in noble society until he was ten. There were only rumors about him until then.
The most notable detail about him was the fact that he was said to be abnormally intelligent for his age even as a child, and those rumors still persisted.
’He mostly only interacts with two people within the academy. Ravian Aurel Graveshroud and Evangeline Florivelle. One is his childhood friend, while the other is his fiancée.’
Another significant piece of news was that the boy was thought to have died at the hands of an assassin six years ago, but he had somehow returned alive a year ago.
Soon, they arrived in an area where the crowd was too thin, and there weren’t enough cadets for Xion to blend into.
He sharpened his gaze as he stared at the boy’s back.
’Absolutely no presence, huh? No wonder there are rumors of him being a puppet.’
Rummaging through his pocket, Xion took out a dull grey coin and tossed it.
Tensing his muscles, he slowly drew the shortswords attached to his back. And in the next moment, he lunged at the boy, aiming to stab both blades through his back, piercing his heart.
But at the last second, the black-haired boy shifted his foot and turned his body, narrowly dodging the shortswords.
Xion suddenly felt a pressure coming from the boy. A sharp pressure as though multiple blades were pointed at his face.
’Well, I expected this much. You wouldn’t be much of a genius if you died from a sneak attack this sloppy.’
He held the blades in reverse grip and, using his momentum, swung the blades towards the boy’s neck from both sides.
But...
"-Uh?"
Xion suddenly paused and looked down.
The black-haired boy was pointing his finger at Xion’s chest. And there on his chest was a perfectly circular, large, gaping hole. It was as though someone had carved out a part of his chest, leaving nothing but a hole.
His consciousness grew blurry, causing him to lose balance and hit the ground.
Light slowly faded from his eyes moments later.
The black-haired boy walked up and observed Xion’s corpse with a contemplative look.
"An assassin? Hmm... no wonder he was so skilled. Was he sent by the same people who sent that assassin six years ago?"
Just then, the dull grey coin he had tossed fell to the ground with a metallic sound.

Tensing his muscles, he slowly drew the shortswords attached to his back. But suddenly, he sheathed them once again and turned around.
’It was probably the same attack he used during the practical exam.’
But he had cast it far too quickly, and the spell itself seemed far smaller in size compared to what he had seen back then.
Xion briefly glanced back.
’Should I give it another try? Maybe I’ll gain something if I change my approach.’
But after some thought, he simply shook his head.
’It’s not worth it.’
There were other targets too, and one of them demanded quite a lot of effort.
And so, Xion left to find his other target.
His second target was the imperial prince, often referred to as ’the crown prince,’ Schniel Solthar Valcarion.
’He is quite the mystery himself.’
According to the rumors, the prince had started displaying an abnormally high intelligence at quite a young age. His intellect was said to surpass even the intelligence of Adrian Caelis Ravenshade.
On the other hand, he was said to be mediocre at best as a mana user.
But the most interesting part was something else entirely.
’The current emperor is incompetent.’
This information was given to him by the higher-ups of the Caelwyn kingdom during the briefing. But according to the rumors, there had been a shift in the emperor’s actions after the crown turned thirteen.
’Whatever that means.’
Soon, Xion arrived in front of a tall white building filled with windows from all directions. This was the dormitory where the students lived. Well, more like one of the dormitories, since there were multiple buildings like this scattered throughout the academy city.
Xion himself was assigned a room in a different dormitory.
The prince was rarely alone in the academy, so the only way Xion could find his opportunity was by meeting him right as he was leaving the dormitory.
’Let’s hope this time goes well.’
After waiting for a while, Xion finally spotted his target leaving the dormitory.
A boy with long white hair with a reddish hue tied neatly behind and ruby-colored eyes that stared ahead. Wearing the academy’s uniform, the boy’s build itself made him seem as though he wasn’t much of a fighter.
Xion walked closer to him and curled his lips into an amicable smile.
"Hello there, my prince. You are shining as radiantly as ever."
The prince stared at him for a bit, then nodded to himself moments later.
"If I remember correctly, you are the Phase Three boy who comes from a commoner background. I witnessed your duel against Saria Velcyra Mythrien, and you were really impressive. Anyways, might I ask what business you have with me?"
"I am no more than a messenger." Xion bowed curtly. "Some of the older cadets wish to meet in private, my prince. They said that they wish to propose a deal to you that will benefit both parties greatly. I was here to ask if you would come with me to meet them now. Of course, you can refuse if you wish."
Hearing him, the prince furrowed his brow.
"Someone wishes to talk to me in private? Hmm... considering that you chose this particular moment to make contact with me, I take it that they don’t want others to find out about this meeting."
He paused with a thoughtful expression.
"I would usually reject something like this, but considering that they sent a cadet like you, they likely aren’t some fools. Fine, lead the way."
’Oh? I thought he’d be more cautious than that.’
Well, it worked out for him either way.
And so, they took a turn and began walking in a different direction. As they walked side by side, Xion turned to the prince and asked in a casual tone, as if making small talk.
"By the way, my prince, what do you think of Adrian Caelis Ravenshade?"
