Adi, I have a question," Evangeline asked, trying her best to suppress her excitement. "If a single mind is controlling multiple bodies, then the things one body sees and hears, the others will know them at the same time, correct?"
Adrian glanced at the two birds on his shoulder and nodded.
"Yes, that is how it works."
"Perfect!" Evangeline cheered. "Then your Eternarch can be used for quick long-distance communication. Like, you can leave one incarnation with someone who lives far away. And whenever that person wants to talk to you, they can speak to the incarnation near them. The incarnation that’s beside you can just repeat their words. It’s an amazing idea, don’t you think?"
As he heard her words, Adrian’s eyes slowly widened. He looked... shocked.
"...Why didn’t I think of that?"
"Oh, don’t worry." Evangeline patted his head. "It’s not your fault. I’m just that smart."
That was a jab, but he seemed so out of it that he didn’t even react to her words.
’Jokes aside, Adi isn’t a reincarnate like me and has never seen smartphones, so it’s totally understandable why he didn’t think of this idea himself.’
Evangeline glanced at the birds again.
Suddenly, her imaginary world manifested before her eyes.
She was lying in a field of grass, bathed in the gentle warmth of the morning sun. All around her, various creatures happily played with one another. Some rabbit-like creatures snuggled up to her, birds of various colors sat on her hands, and cat-like creatures happily licked her cheeks.
Seeing this scene, a single desire emerged from deep within her heart.
’I want it!’
She gripped Adrian’s shoulder—who was still lost in thought—and began shaking him.
"Adi! I want a magical pet too!!!"
A cute little creature she could summon whenever she wanted.
"Give it to me! Give it to me now!!"
Adrian removed her hands from his shoulders and dismissed the birds now sitting on the window frame.
He sighed.
"Calm down, I am not deaf. And this is a library, so think before you shout."
Evangeline paused and looked around. Everyone was staring at them with an unamused look.
She lowered her head in shame.
’Looks like I messed up...’
After that, Adrian and Evangeline left the library and returned to the dormitory. Evangeline was now sitting on the bed in Adrian’s room, watching him as he drew strange patterns on the floor using his blood.
’Why does it look like he is preparing some sort of black magic? Wait, does this world even have black magic?’
She had never heard about anything like that, so probably not.
Soon, Adrian stood up, seemingly done with whatever he was doing. The black bird stared at the crimson patterns on the floor.
[It looks alright.]
Evangeline stood up from the bed and approached him.
"Adi, what is this? What about getting an Eternarch?"
"It’s for the summoning, so calm down." Adrian sighed. "Now you just have to stand on it and channel your mana into the formula through your feet."
He suddenly handed her a piece of paper with something written on it.
"When the summoning spell glows, read out what is written on this paper."
Saying that, he walked away and sat on a chair in the corner of the room.
Evangeline’s heartbeat quickened with excitement as she stepped onto the patterns drawn on the floor with Adrian’s blood.
’Magical pet, here I come!’
She channeled her mana into the pattern, and it began glowing. Seeing that, she took a deep breath and began reading what was written on the piece of paper Adrian had given her.
"From the fusion of their stardust, a star was born, shining more brilliantly than any other.
"Yet its brilliance lasted only for a fleeting moment before shattering into a million pieces, scattering its brilliance into the lifeless earth.
"In the name of that brilliance, I summon you, beings of eternity, to form a pact."
The moment she finished speaking, the glow in the red patterns intensified. Evangeline could feel that the spell had activated.
She clenched her fists, trying her best to contain her excitement.
’Let’s see, what will I get? Please let it be a cute and small creature.’
And so she waited as her expectations intensified with every passing moment.
But after a while, something strange happened. The glow in the formula simply... faded.
’...Huh?’
Evangeline blinked as she looked below. Then she slowly turned to Adrian.
"What just happened?"
"Hmm..." He furrowed his brow. "Try again."
And so she did. Not once or twice, but several times. But the same thing kept happening. The glow in the formula would simply fade after a while.
By now, Adrian had a deep frown on his face.
"Alisardarc, is this normal? I remember that my own summoning had failed the first time, but this..."
[It is strange. Not being able to summon a strong Eternarch is understandable, since they are all extremely prideful. But at least one Eternarch should’ve answered after so many attempts.]
As she listened to them, Evangeline asked hesitantly.
"So... what do I do now?"
She tried to appear calm, but internally, she was anything but calm.
’Is something wrong with me? Do Eternarchs not like me? Did I make some mistake—?’
"Don’t overthink it," Adrian said flatly, as if reading her mind. "It’s not going to help."
"But..." Sher whimpered as her expression fell. "I want a magical pet too..."
The bird flew off Adrian’s shoulder and landed on Evangeline’s, speaking in its deep, abyssal voice.
[There is another way, and it guarantees that you will summon something.]
Her eyes lit up the moment she heard the bird’s words. Adrian raised an eyebrow and asked.
"There was another method too?"
[Indeed. There are two types of summoning methods. What she is attempting is a contract summoning. It is like an open invitation that any being in the Eternal Realm can choose to accept. The core purpose of this summoning is to invite a being willing to form a contract. The other method is normal summoning. It’s straightforward. Summoning something with this method is guaranteed. The strength of the Eternarch you summon will wholly depend on the amount of mana you use in the summoning process.]
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
"And what’s the catch?"
The bird’s reply came after a short pause.
[You can’t form a contract with the Eternarch you summon this way. Which means that once the summon is dismissed, summoning the same Eternarch again will be nearly impossible.]
Adrian looked at Evangeline.
"What do you think? I don’t really understand your motivation for wanting an Eternarch, but this seems a good alternative. Rank One Eternarchs require very little mana to maintain their form. You can maintain one indefinitely since your mana recovery rate at Phase Three surpasses the mana that’ll be constantly consumed."
Evangeline opened her mouth to speak but paused.
’No...’
This method didn’t feel right.
She wanted a cute little pet, and it didn’t really matter if it was weak or not. In that sense, Adrian’s method sounded good. But he had left something out. If she were to ever run out of mana completely, then the summoning would be canceled.
And if that happened, she would permanently lose her magical pet with no definite way to summon it once again.
’I don’t... want something like that.’
